Husqvarna makes the most interesting bikes of all. Around $10,500 US ain't as bad as I thought. I'll be sticking with my Vit 401 for the foreseeable future. It's still the apple of my eye.

Not everyone likes it, that's for sure. I do think the old 701 design was very very unique and it's a step towards mainstream designs from there. I'm interested to see one in person, as sometimes I'm far more impressed there, than photos.

Oof that’s a good looking bike lol. I feel like I was just saying to someone a month or so ago it’s a shame they don’t do a bigger version of the 401 But yeah I would say this is gonna be a product of the ktm/cfmoto 800 development right? CFMoto start making the engines and the duke 790 is back and the pretty impressive 800nk and now this?
@MotoJournoKris

They definitely needed something to step up to from the 401, as not everyone would go all the way to a Norden 901! The partnership with CFMOTO has to help there, not sure how overlap there is between the KTM and CF's 800 engines, I'd have assumed a fair bit, but I'm not 100% sure. It'll be interesting to see which of the capacities stick around between the 790, 890 and 990 versions, and what Husqvarna spin-offs we get.

@@MotoJournoKris I think in theory it’s meant to just be the engines right? But add in the WP suspension and the profiles… especially the duke and nk look very very similar lol. I suspect that in reality the CFMoto - KTM joint venture runs a lot deeper, but much like the other European brands building bikes with Indian manufacturers they like to down play it
@MotoJournoKris

@@Bobby-wn5yr Yep I think CFMOTO were meant to have bought the rights to the older 790 engine design for their own models, however then we saw the engine reappear in KTMs, which left me wondering if that was just a newer version in the KTMs or all the same. I'd heard the electronics on the KTM are much more developed and CFMOTO are still catching up there, and that may have been a big enough advantage from KTM's perspective. Certainly it looks a lot more like the Bajaj partnership in many ways, but it's all speculation on my part.

@@carlosandleon Being comfortable for an hour or two isn't a touring motorcycle requirement, it's the lowest standard for any bike. Touring is being comfortable for 6-10 hours and then being happy to do it again the next day. The 801 should cover commuting duties easily, but I'm not sure that makes it a commuter bike.

The first gen of 390 platform bikes did them a lot of brand damage in that regard, but it does seem that lately they’re not so bad for mechanical things. Most of the problems I see with KTM’s these days is software and sensors, which tbh isn’t entirely just a them problem. I hired an MG car in Europe and nearly all of its very clever systems crashed at least once on the trip lol. My personal favourite was when the wipers crashed until I turned the car off and on again 🤣

@@Bobby-wn5yr Yep early days there was complaints, and I think that's reflected in the 390s (and 401s) having a slightly lower retail than some of the more basic Japanese competition. They seem to have improved there though. All the new tech... We've got classic bikes still going 60+ years later today, I wonder how many of today's bikes will still be running in 60 years! We looked at buying an MG a couple of years back (just wanted a small cheap run-around), and ended up buying a second hand Hyundai instead from family, full service record. Ironically the engine seized in the i30 recently and needed to be fully rebuilt at huge expense. Apparently a common issue with their GDI engines, common enough there's a class action!

I always felt like the svartpilen/vitpilen line was really unique, something you couldn't find anywhere else. This bike seems to be moving away from that into something more homogenous with modern bikes from other manufacturers. The styling isn't as unique and as for the engine platform... well just chuck it on the pile of well designed, inoffensive parallel twins that are out today - a pile that is soon to eclipse the sun.
@MotoJournoKris

I was thinking similar when putting together the cover image, as it really struck me. I like the new 401, that's a bit more mainstream for sure, and this bike seems like another step in that direction but even more so. The old 701 had a really unique look, even more than the original 401 I'd say. I guess that's the price of the mass market appeal. I do like the styling now but it doesn't have that unique factor.

Yea I'm not sure on that one! My guess is keeping it different to the Supermoto and Enduro versions maybe, and have an option with wider appeal. I could be totally wrong, but I feel like more regular riders would test out the P-twin and be happy with it, the big single probably appeals to a smaller group of riders who know exactly what they want.
