I'm in the same position. I'm on my 2nd KLR 650. My current is a 2023. I love it! However, my riding style has changed due to my new career giving me more time off. I have time to go on longer trips. I want to take my bike with me and camp out of my truck and then ride out like a basecamp. I've been wanting to swap to the KLX 300 so badly! The KLR is so HEAVY! I never noticed it in the past as I was just doing gravel roads and really mild stuff. I've been finding myself going more off road. I can ride the KLR all the places I want to go, but it is challenging sometimes. Picking it up sucks. I'm just trying to figure out how to do it without getting screwed on trade-in price. Local dealer offered me $3750. My KLR has been garage kept and cleaned every time. 1,300 miles. Kept on maintainer. Has crash bars (tusk), enduro engineering skid plate, barkbusters hand guards. I'm not selling it for half. LOL GTFO

Swanky Hi, I have owned a few KLX250s/300r for a few years and have done heaps of modding and research on them. My current outgoing KLX is a 2010 model that I picked up from a farmer with 870Km on the clock, When he originally purchased it New from the dealer, He had a 300r head and barrel installed from scratch or close to, It sat in the shed for most of its life. When I acquired it , it was covered in red bull dust, wasp nests and sun faded plastics. It had a Staintune Stainless Performance pipe and an opened airbox. Once cleaned and rejetted it actually scared me on the first time I opened it up on a back road. Not only did it have decent bottom end from idle it just kept pulling all the way, I never red lined it, but for a 300 I was and still am so impressed. I had the suspension revalved with Race Tec Gold valves, springs for my weight, after some adjustment it was planted yet plush enough for and old fell like me to hoon when I wanted and conserve comfort levels as I dialled it back. A Seat Concepts seat and an IMS tank gave it a 300+ Km range, and all day rides were a breeze. It loved twistie's even with MT21 up front & 606 rear. One hundred & forty Km+ was possible on the freeway, but 95Km was the sweet spot, so not a freeway bike, but for any dirt riding it is still a great basis to build on. Breaks were spot on and saved my bacon a few times. Not a wheelie machine as the front end carried a bit of the weight, but a hard pull at the lights when provoked would often see the front lift a bit in second and third. Has been a lot of fun and still averaged 27 k/Lt. And the latest Fuel injected models are the same bike ! Plastics and rear tail ass is a bit different. That's it.

I traded my 2018 KLR650 for a 2021 KLX300 whenever it came out. The KLX300 won't be as comfortable on long stretches of highway. It's great for back roads. It would be fine for all the lettered county roads in Wisconsin. You should have no problem getting to or maintaining 65 mph. Any faster than that, and a head wind and inclines may slow you down a bit. The real difference, and where it's going to obliterate the KLR650, is off road. You're a good off road rider already. You'd really kill it off road with the KLX300, given what I've seen you do on the KLR650. The KLX300 won't be the road-going adventure bike like the KLR650. You could do it, but you probably wouldn't like it. But it's a bike you could ride to the single track, spend a few hours on the trail, and then ride home. The only place I wouldn't ride mine much was the interstate. I think that even if the seat is a bit higher, you'd probably not have an issue with it. It is more narrow than the KLR650, so that helps out. Gas mileage is highly variable. I got up to the 60s mpg on 55 mph back-roads. Spirited gravel road riding with 70+ mph paved riding drops that to the 40s. Single track, it drops to the 30s. The KLX was my gateway to real off-roading. I ended up trading it for a pure dirt bike. I did get another dual sport, a CRF450L, and still have a pure dirt bike, a Beta XTrainer. Since you're not typically riding long distance on the road, one hour or less, the KLX300 just might be the thing for you.

I just picked up a 2024 KLX300 and will be doing a personal shootout against my Tuareg 660 for the rest of the year (Arizona). Doing group dual sport rides, I'm about an hour from a lot of stuff. I've ridden the Tuareg to/from the rides, but am curious if I will enjoy hauling my KLX on a simple hitch rack more than the boring highway miles. Might be able to keep both, but don't want to maintain two bikes at this point in my life. In theory, the KLX will be much easier to get around the state for various rides.

Want something lighter than the KLR but still great on the highway, get a DR650 and put a 20 liter gas tank on it better off road than the KLR 650 and just as good on the highway, I have had bough and love them bough,. but the DR650 is a lot more fun off road, and I liked it better on the twisty roads. I do not care for wind protection, but do have some candy ass bikes ( bikes with wind protection) you could all ways add it, but something about the DR650 I just do not want wind protection. I have owned 2 klr (gen 2) in the past. Nothing bad to say, but they are heavy, and the gen 3 is heavier than ever. A heavy bike is more work off road, sketchier on a gravel and wallows in mud. A heavy bike is harder to pick up and more likely to stain / pull / hurt / hurt something in a tip over or if you put a foot down and try to "save it". I've owned lots of street bikes in the last 20 years. I currently own 2 KLXs, one DS for trails, and one SM for street. I have just decided that I don't do highway trips anymore. If I need to travel somewhere to ride, I use my van and a hitch carrier. Short comings of KLX? (after you do normal mods, handlebars, pegs ect) Small tank. No fuel gauge. Sometimes finding the aftermarket accessories you want are not as easy to get as Honda.

Biggest things are buzzy on the freeway and not much carrying extra items. In what way does it beat the KLR650? I'd look at the 2023/24 KLR650 and for 31 in. inseam, sit in the 650s, seat is 2 in lower, but ground clearance is only 1 in down. I love it with 32 in. inseam! I can’t speak to the fuel injected 300, but I have an ‘09 250 KLX. The suspension is great for the type of ridding I do. It’s tolerable on the highway for about an hour as long as it’s not too windy. I have a 31” inseam, and yeah it sucks. But lighter bikes definitely make a difference when you are that short. I was kind of use to riding a tall bike because I had an old CR125 and a KX250. So when I bought my 300 Rally, I left the stock suspension in place until I got use to the weight of the bike. And when I was ready to upgrade, I was able to get a rear shock that could handle my weight, plus it is 1” sorter than the stock shock. Which is exactly what I needed paired with the low profile seat from seat concepts. So for me, it made sense to buy a bike that needed upgraded suspension, specifically for the fact that when I did buy aftermarket, it would be a shock designed for someone shorter. In other words, even if Honda offered a premium version of the 300l/Rally, with quality suspension, I still would have bought the budget version. Yeah, it’s only 1 inch, but every inch counts... $550 for a new Ktech rear shock (short version) is worth every penny for a shorter rider.
