Great to know MDOT is looking into road noise reductions! What does MDOT’s plan to use porous pavement and reduce vehicle speeds look like? Other places (Denmark, the Netherlands, and the U.K.) have begun successfully implementing these techniques on their highways and road system, so I’d imagine MDOT is keeping apace with these places or is planning something even better! Could porous pavement be implemented on all MDOT roads (in addition to expressways) during standard resurfacings with minimal additional cost?

Hi there! Porous asphalt pavements have been in use in Michigan for more than 15 years. Ann Arbor has two streets using porous pavement: Sylvan Avenue and Willard Street. U-M and MSU also have parking lots with porous pavement, along with some parking lot locations across the state. Porous asphalt pavement’s large amount of voids results in a weaker pavement than conventional asphalt which has, thus far, limited its application to low-volume roads and parking lots, but as with all materials, they're being improved every day and we'll keep an eye on advancements in their devleopment and if they can handle heavier traffic, especially in Michigan's wet-freeze climate. The maintenance challenges and high initial cost posed by current porous pavements make it a bit impractical currently.
