2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: Leading the Charge in Electric Delivery Vans
Mercedes-Benz propels the evolution of its vehicle lineup towards electrification, showcasing a diverse range of electric vehicles (EVs). The latest addition to this transformation is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, an electric variant of the renowned Sprinter commercial van. While lacking the opulent features of its EQS SUV counterpart, the eSprinter excels in delivering a silent, smooth, and responsive performance, substantiating the suitability of electric vans for the burgeoning delivery sector.
Initially launched in the European market in December 2019, the electric Sprinter faced limitations in range, making it less feasible for North America. However, the 2024 eSprinter, representing the second generation, addresses these concerns, especially for the U.S. market, with a singular configuration featuring a high-roof body, a 170.0-inch wheelbase, and a 280.4-inch overall length.
Empowered by a 113.0-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, the eSprinter boasts an impressive estimated range of 273 miles on the European WLTP test cycle, with a city-specific cycle estimate reaching 329 miles. While the anticipated EPA range for the U.S. market may be around 230 miles, the eSprinter's capabilities align well with its intended purpose of local deliveries. Notably, the van incorporates a standard heat pump to enhance efficiency in colder conditions, and selectable drive settings like Eco and Maximum Range further optimize energy usage.
Charging the eSprinter is a streamlined process, with the capability to handle up to 115 kW on a DC fast-charger. A claimed 42-minute duration takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent, providing practical efficiency for time-sensitive delivery operations. The maximum Level 2 charging speed is 9.6 kW.
Equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor available in two output options, the eSprinter delivers a balanced performance. The variant we tested, featuring 201 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, showcased sufficient acceleration, particularly for local driving and highway merges. The van's 75-mph limiter and deliberate accelerator response emphasize its focus on efficient and purposeful driving.
Surprisingly, the eSprinter exhibits admirable road manners, handling bumps and curves with finesse. Even with a load of 440 pounds (well below its maximum capacity), the van maintains stability, absorbs impacts, and demonstrates precise steering, instilling confidence on varied terrains.
Internally, the eSprinter mirrors its combustion-powered counterpart, offering a high-quality cabin experience. Comfortable seats, well-cushioned armrests, and an upscale central display contribute to an ergonomic and enjoyable driving environment. Practical storage solutions, a flat floor for a spacious feel, and optional features like a rear-camera mirror enhance the overall interior experience.
In the competitive landscape of electric delivery vans, the eSprinter enters the arena facing rivals such as the Rivian EDV, Ford E-Transit, and Ram ProMaster EV. Priced at $74,181, the eSprinter positions itself above the Ford and Ram but remains more accessible than the Rivian. Mercedes's emphasis on superior range sets it apart, even as competitors boast impressive payload capacities.
The 2024 eSprinter, representing a significant leap in the electric-van segment, serves as a precursor to Mercedes's upcoming advancements. The forthcoming generation, slated for 2026, promises further enhancements with the VAN.EA architecture. In the present landscape dominated by online shopping and rapid deliveries, the eSprinter stands ready to lead the charge and meet the demands of modern logistics.
