I owned three Geo Metros. I bought my wife a new '96 and liked it so much I bought myself a new '97. They both rotted to death at 185K and 186K miles. Motors ran fine. That is very impressive from the Metro's! What do you mean by they rusted to death? Like, couldn't you keep driving them? Or what made them too bad to drive? Also I heard the Mirages tend to not rust too easy, especially if you put an under-coat on. They tend to be a very reliable car if you take care of them.

@@extralock1045 The whole unibody rots and the car becomes structurally unstable. The shock towers rot, the control arm supports rot, the pinch welds rot, the rocker panels rot, the floor pan rots, the axle rots, the brake backing plates rot, the gas tank mounts rot, the motor mount brackets rot. If you continue to drive it you hit a bump or slam on the brakes and something collapses on the car. The brake lines rot and you start blowing brake lines. People out west and in the south haven't seen this but in the northeast they use a lot of salt on the roads and it just corrodes everything. I was told the only thing that happens out west is dry rot.

@@extralock1045 Yes. That's how you tell if a car is getting near the end of it's life. If the unibody is starting to rot. There are many cars here in the northeast that run fine and have many miles left on their powertrain but are in the boneyard because of rust. You can keep swapping out parts or even rebuilding a motor but once the unibody starts to rust it's nearing the end. Unfixable because of the complexity of the unibody.

What about putting some sort of sealant on the bottom of the car? I have heard there is some sort of sealant paint you're able to put on the frame. You need to apply a new coat every couple of years. And it will keep it alive for many years. If I am not mistaken it completely stops the rust.

Nice video! You put a lot into this one. Stopped by for the car, stayed for you. Thanks for NOT reviewing the exhaust roar note, take-off rubber burn, fake carbon-fiber aggressive look, seat bolsters that hug you during those 110mph corners we all do everyday. Watching to the end I think this is the perfect car for you :) I almost bought one a few years ago when we were looking for a town car, mainly groceries and errands, and I had a loaner for a week. Center City Philadelphia's streets are old and narrow where this is perfect and it actually has bumpers. Very reliable when serviced properly (you are over the top). I was getting around 50 mpg mixed local highway/town. Didn't buy because I felt like I was going 100 at 70, the steering wheel didn't like keeping center, it crashed over bumps, and over 55 it was loud. But as a single purpose city car at low mph, it's a great fit. Enjoy your car!
@extralock1045

Thank you for sticking around for the video! That's awesome!. The car does feel fast at 70 MPH. Or like, my dads Ford Maverick, when I go 55 MPH in the Mirage, and 55 in the Maverick, the Maverick feels like I'm going much slower. Probably will end up speeding in that by mistake if I don't watch the speed. I forgot to talk about the engine sound, as it is a bit noisier than people may expect, but far from loud. I like the sound of it. My steering wheel doesn't center it's self fully, like if you're making a U turn, you need to turn the wheel manually back to center for the most part, and you can turn the wheel, and it stays there. I got used to it very fast though, coming from the Cadillac. I didn't notice it crashing over bumps to be fair. Maybe I am just too used to it. But it's not like the Maverick where it's like you're watching a driving movie with the sound off. You hear more in it. For me, I do a lot of road trips. Some over 500 miles. I just set cruise control to 55 MPH, and leave it there. I like cruising at 55, and getting 55-60 MPG. Today I did a 110 mile drive, according to the car I averaged 66.8 MPG. Did about 10 miles in the city. 100 On the freeway. Just went 55 MPH, besides the 15 minute slowdown to around ~5-10 MPH.

It makes it so much easier to keep clean and even the hump on the backseat floor is protected. Seat covers really help keep the seats clean too. As far as armrest goes, I installed the oem center console myself and its good for arm support. I'm no mechanic but I followed a video and it's been worth it.

The trunk protector does act a bit like a bowl as the sides are raised by maybe half an inch so maybe one that's more like a mat would be good for you. The floor mats are definitely pricey but you'll find them so worth it once you actually use them. The center console is in a good spot btw. I use it daily for arm support and I keep a bunch of stuff in there too. I wanted the ES trim specifically for the center console as the other trims come with an arm rest attached to the seat and it can't be installed on those. People are telling you to upgrade your rims/tires but I prefer steel over aluminum alloy as they are stronger and won't bend as easily. My mpg isn't the best as I'm zooming everywhere 😅. @@extralock1045 haha. Well my bar is kinda of high cause the ECHO I had. 30 isn't bad but I don't consider it great BUT the car still sips gas and is reliable which I need as I drive a lot even outside of work. Ironically when the ECHO first came out I didn't care for it. I'm like ugly. When I was in the market for a car my coworker at the time suggested it. I saw the restyled 03 I fell in love. I got the 2 door. Of course owning an ECHO I'm warmed up to the pre-03 versions as I like the quirkiness. And it stands out. Yes I agree your mpg has so many variables. I'm usually with the flow of traffic. I try to keep it at 65mph. HIghway driving in the city yes I do, luckily my schedule is so fluid I don't deal with rush hour too much which is nice. Oh yes! The ECHO very reliable cause it was simple. I would beat it and it would start right up. I bought the 03 ECHO new. Originally wanted a green one I saw but since I didn't buy it on the spot someone else got it so they got me the exact same car but black. I didn't pay attention to my car as much as I do now. I want to say when I got rid of it I was at 167k? I think?? I had it for 10 years. I only got rid of it for emotional reasons but not practical lol. Now that i'm old I have an affinity for that car. Hope that answers your questions. For the ECHO MPG would range from 30s in the winter and 40s up to 50 easily in the summer. I had a scan guage that would read that. I know it's not exact but gives me an idea.

If the car is for just 1 or 2 people, you can also remove the seat-backs entirely. The cargo room is then a lot more flat, if you leave the seat in. It does provide more versatility. That button to undo the seatbelt from the seat-back is for this reason; it needs to be unbuttoned to remove the seat-back. I love all the flat space I have back there. It's like a mini-camper now.

One thing you can try is remove the bottom part of the back seat where you sit on. Then fold the backrest down. It will actually go down quite a bit further if you don't have the bottom installed. @extralock1045 I work as a van mechanic and the manufacturer has 40,000km (24,800 mile) oil changes. With no major issues outside of the usual. It's a very american thing to have what looks to me like very very short oil change intervals based off of maybe cars in the 70s. 25,000km is the common oil change interval for passenger cars here in Europe too. So the short service intervals in America fascinate me. But I would prefer our vans to have an oil change every 30,000km vs the required 40,000km.

I've taken quite a liking to this car. It's kind of my dream to purchase the SE version. Have you ever taken it up to 80mph? I live in Florida with lots of highway driving, and the fastest I go is usually 80 although for the most part I drive slower.
@extralock1045

These cars can go 80 MPH. I am in Florida as well right now, Clearwater, Florida. But why bother going 80 MPH? You lose a ton of MPG. You will loose about 25 MPG going 80 MPH instead of 55 MPH, or 60 MPH. Plus going 80 MPH gives you less reaction time, you get blown around more, and if a tire pops or something it's easier to control at lower speeds.

@extralock1045
2 ай бұрын
Well, it depends. Are you looking for a used Mirage? If so, get the Toyota. Actually, for a first car, you're unlikely to be on top maintenance, and will put it off a lot, so get the Toyota, like a used 2018 Toyota Yaris. Small, and absurdly reliable. I would feel comfortable getting a used Mirage, you can get a 2018 one for like $7,000. But you need to know the service records, you do NOT want to get one that hasn't had a CVT fluid change in like, 60,000 or more miles. The sooner the better. With Toyota, it doesn't matter as much. You still need to do services, just not quite as often.

If you drive it at 80 miles per hour with the air conditioner on you will look at around 35 miles per gallon. Pretty bad. But not many cars get better gas mileage at that speed. It's just a very inefficient speed. I don't see a reason to go so fast. Plus it's way above the speed limit as well. The highest speed limit is 70 mph here. Most of them are 55 or 65 mph. Yes I am the person who's going 55 mph in a work zone and getting aggressively passed because nobody goes 55 in the work Zone it seems. But I also go 55 normally as well.
