I don’t understand the Detroit trade up stuff. They are already out a first and would need to do another first to trade up? They’ve been rebuilding for 6 years. Trading up in this draft isn’t going to raise their ceiling at all. If anything, they should trade back more than any team in the lottery

1, Does this series teach Atlanta who to draft for the long term trends in the NBA that will guide them to the Finals?

What would it take for san Antonio to get the #1 pick, and if you are atlanta what would you ask for i. and Who would you draft?

It depends so much on ATL’s board basically. If they think Sarr is in his own tier, or x player is in his own tier and will go 2 or 3 if they pass, then they won’t move down. If some of these rumors are correct and they like Clingan a lot, or think that Clingan/Sarr and let’s say ZR are the T3 prospects, they’re in the same tier, they don’t mind who they get out of those 3, but then there’s a fall off…then it’s possible. As long as they are sure that one of those 3 guys will be there at #4 100% of the time, that’s where moving down would make sense. I can’t imagine them being willing to move from 1 to 8 tho, I think it’d be 1 to 4 and they’d certainly ask for 8. If SAS thinks Sarr or whoever is by far the best player and they’ll 90%+ go 1 or 2, 10% at 3, then maybe to them giving up 4/8 for that player is worth it. ATL does have 10 gtd contracts at about 158M. Pick 1 is about 12.6M. 4/8 would be 15.4M or so. That’s about the same as filling that other roster spot with a vet minimum so it’s fine I guess. But they’re right at the tax threshold with that pick, with about 3 spots to fill, and Saddiq as an RFA. If they kept Saddiq it’d be very hard, basically impossible to stay below the 1st apron without shedding salary in a Dejounte, Capela, Hunter, Trae, or whoever trade. Maybe they’d want 1 for 4 and then future picks? Probably their own picks? 1 to 4 would save them 3.5M, then they’d probably need to save another 7.5-8M or so to keep Saddiq and fill out roster with minimums and stay below the 1st apron. They’d need to save probably 15-16M to be below the tax. So it’d depend a ton on if they want to keep Bey or what. If not, moving down to 4 and saving a few more million would keep them under the tax. They’d still prolly want to save some $ to use for at least part of the MLE though. So maybe P1 for P4, ATL’s own ‘25 1st, their own ‘27 1st (so SAS keeps ATL’s ‘26 swap) and then SAS saves them a good amount of $. Like 12-15M or so. Maybe it’d be SAS being the 3rd team in a Dejounte to LAL trade where SAS would take on DLo’s 18.7M expiring and like Cam Reddish expiring (so about 21M) and they send back maybe 7-8M in salary or something. They’d likely get some kind of compensation, maybe a couple distant LAL 2nds, LAC ‘27 2nd via ATL, and a meh prospect like Gueye or Max Lewis. I could see something like that. I’m sure ATL would love to have their two picks back and to be able to fade the tax this year while retaining Saddiq or using the MLE, and the LAL Dejounte trade makes a ton of sense. DLo would actually be a decent stop gap PG for them on an expiring until they figured out a longterm solution. With him and Tre Jones, they’d have >48m of solid PG play which would be massive. DLo would also provide good volume 3P shooting which would also help. Whether they draft a PG or trade for one or whatever, they prolly won’t be ready to play right away let alone start. So having DLo wouldn’t be a bad thing. Also it’s a salary they could use in a deadline trade or something. So basically P1 for P4, ATL ‘25/‘27 1sts, and a promise to ATL to save them around 14-15M in some way…and that they’d receive a couple good 2nds for doing so. SAS having picks 1/8 would be very interesting. I like ZR for SAS, I like Sarr, and then they’ll maybe have Sheppard, Castle, Topic, or whoever they like fall to them at 8. It’d give ATL a ton of flexibility, they could rebuild if they wanted to or re-tool for a year without worrying about giving up a really good lotto pick in ‘25. For SAS having like Vassell/ZR or Sarr/Wemby along with pick 8, Keldon, Sochan, Branham, Wesley, still plenty of future picks and movable contracts, etc. is a pretty awesome future. They really would need to love who they’d get at #1, but ya that seems fairly reasonable for a move up.

There are rumors ATL likes Clingan a lot, which is interesting. I expect them to want to move off of Capela, but I thought they’d just rock with Onyeka. But if they’re not in love with Sarr or ZR then sure why not move to 4? I personally like ZR for them, they could have some big Fs with ZR and Jalen, Hunter if they keep him ideally gets better, then moving on from Dejounte makes too much sense and LAL makes too much sense. If they can move down to 4 and get their guy, (Castle would be pretty cool next to Trae and he should be there at 4) get back two of their own picks, trade Dejounte to LAL for say P17/‘28 swap/‘29 1st, DLo, then filler like Reddish or Hayes AND save a ton of money? That seems perfect unless they’re in love with whoever they have at 1. They’d have Jalen Johnson, Onyeka, Trae, JHS, whoever they take at 17, ‘28 LAL swap, ‘29 LAL 1st, Bufkin, AJ Griffin if he doesn’t go to LAL in that trade, and the ability to retain Saddiq or use the full MLE while staying below the tax. They’d have a very young core while still having guys like Bogdan and Capela they can make decisions on, and as I said…infinite flexibility. In reality the 1st pick just doesn’t rly get moved but whatever lol. I had fun speculating, I’m bored in the hospital (I’m fine) so nothing better to do.

the rumors are that Atlanta's Quinn wants Clingon, Clingon will be able to improve atlanta in the short timer and prevent San Antonio from benefiting with atlanta's draft pick
