For the world tree, I’m playing in a 6th level game right now, and got to watch the Barbarian (wielding a maul with the topple property, and the great weapon master feat for a bonus action attack after killing a foe) enact the following horror against a large patrol of Githyanki: Step 1: At the start of the enemy’s turn, yoink one of them up to where the barbarian was standing and reduce speed to zero. Step 2: On the barbarian’s turn, topple the enemy with the maul. Enemy is now prone (so disadvantage on their attacks and advantage on melee attacks against them), and their speed is 0, so they cannot spend half their movement to stand up. Step 3: Repeat. Each took about 2-3 hits to kill. The assembly line of bringing up enemies to a good location, dropping them prone and immobile, and getting lots of advantage without having to reckless attack was lethal.

From what I remember, during that D&D interview they said something along the lines of "using Intimidation to persuade someone" when talking about Primal Knowledge, definitely something they could have worded more clearly to avoid this type of confusion, but I don't think they ever said the feature lets you make "Strength (Persuasion)" checks.
@reedjos08
Ай бұрын
Don't the rules just let you do that anyway or have they taken that out? The original PHB has a section that mentions that you can use any atribute for pretty much any check as long as you can justify it and the GM allows it. So you could persuade someone of your athletic ability using strength instead of charisma.
@nadirku

@@reedjos08 Right, using a different ability modifier, and/or a different skill proficiency is an optional thing that should still be available if the GM allows it, with no changes I have heard of from the 2014 rules. I was commenting on one of Chris's comments about the new/updated level 3 Barbarian feature that explicitly lets players choose to substitute in Strength when making an ability check that can apply certain Skill Proficiencies, so when the GM calls for a "Charisma (Intimidation)" check a Barbarian player who has a Rage active can choose to make a "Strength (Intimidation)" check instead, and as an added bonus the part of Rage that grants Advantage on the Strength ability checks should also apply to the check.

@@reedjos08 True, but the barbarian feature is explicitly baked into the class so that the barbarian can say outright "I can use my Strength here" rather than relying on DM fiat, even if they use that optional rule. Add some smithing profs and the ability to turn normal and magic armor into spiked armor and the ability to choose between the ac of worn armor or unarmored ac for consistency and BAM a pretty mid subclass gets pretty ok. Especially considering how unarmed strikes as a bonus action is a lot better with new grapple/shove/etc. rules in 2024. Some abilities on the subclass would still be better to rework to be more flavorful. Maybe making the BA dash have a side ability to it that deals some flat pierce damage to any enemy of choice you move within 5ft of. Just something to show your crazy ass flailing self. Also not dwarf only anymore obviously. (If magic armor is converted into spiked armor attacks get a bonus equal to that of the armors ac if the armor had one)

One stealth nerf Barbarians might get (depending on what's in the monster manual) is that if enemies now deal a different damage type instead of nonmagical physical as a replacement for magical physical damage the rage resistances Barbarians get is much worse now

Currently casting the Wish Spell to change the wording of Frenzy so that it applies to the first target you hit using Strength on THE CURRENT turn. That way it can work with Retaliation, as it should!

Hey Chris, I feel like with the new Intimidating Presence, they could have used this level to give you a tweak to instinctive pounce and let you choose to move half your speed OR activate Intimidating Presence when you entered your rage. Thematically your rage is so fierce when you enter your rage that you frighten your enemies :)

50:30 I believe Zealous Presence could be allowed also as a Reaction (When a creature you can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll or a saving Throw), in which case it lasts until the start of that creature's turn... more usable and satisfactory

At 3rd level Warrior of the Gods seems like a very strong feature. Show me another bonus action heal that can do an average of 26 point of healing at that level. Paladins can’t get close to that until level 5 then the Barb jumps a little ahead again at level 6. I just wish it scaled a little faster.

Not sure if you noticed this about Rage, like if the wording was like this in the PlayTest and you noted it... but: I think based on this wording, a 2024 Barbarian can Rage as a bonus action and take the Dash Action (or any other kind of action), and keep their Rage going until their next turn (even if they weren't attacked), which really help them close the gaps on distant enemy with no risk. The 2014 Barbarian could Rage and dash in but the moment they end their turn, the rage ends. 2014 made barbarians only rage when they could guarantee an attack.

I think you're underrating zealous presence given how many extra rages they're giving with one coming back every short rest, and them lasting 10 minutes so you can sometimes conserve there. And even with the old barbarian at that high level I rarely saw people not having rage most of the time and some left over. I could see this getting used 3-4 times in a lot of boss fights especially at high levels and that's a big bonus to the party if most rounds everyone has advantage on attacks and saves.

Chris, have a look at the wording for Frenzy and Divine fury... an argument could be made for a 2nd attack of the round, either offhand or lvl5+, to get the same damage bonus from Frenzy or Divine Fury as long as the target of the 2nd attack is on the SAME target. The wording doesn't say that the first hit, only that the first target gets the extra damage, if the target doesn't change for subsequent attacks, then can the damage apply a 2nd or 3rd time?

You said one of your main complaints for the Barbarian was the Wild Heart's 10th level Commune with Nature ritual, and I agreed. So I houseruled it so that for 1 hour after Communing with Nature, the Barb is able to both Speak with Animals and Speak with Plants in the area where he Communed. After all, the ability is named "Native Speaker", so what could be more appropriate than that? You don't usually think of the Barbarian as the face of the party, but for 1 hour a day with the local plants and animals, they can be. Still a ribbon ability in most ways, but some added fun.

As i read the 2014 Rage it adds Rage damage to melee weapon attacks. Unarmed strikes are melee weapon attack, they are not attacks with a melee weapon do Rage bonus in 2014 applies to unarmed strikes. This seems more like a cleaned up wording for me. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Another thing I kinda think they could've done with the Berserker is make the Frenzy attack "once per turn" instead of "once on your turn", so you can apply the bonus damage to your Retaliation/Opportunity attacks too.

Man, without rage beyond death any desire I had to play a zealot Barb has dropped to like zero. That was one of the most mechanically flavorful features and I will almost certainly ask the DM to play the old zealot, at the cost of the rest of the new changes, any time I want to go that route.

It looks like dual wielding nick weapons will actually be competitive with a greataxe at most tiers of play, and the dual wielder feat is up there with the great weapon master feat as far as actually providing extra damage per round. That's kind of exciting because barbarian is one of the classes that I most visualized being that sort of reckless, insane guy swinging a pair of weapons every which way on the battlefield, but it was just not viable in 2014 rules.

Path of the World Tree looks amazing, it takes care of one of the Barbarian's worst weaknesses in combat, which is getting to the enemy. At high levels, you can not only get yourself all around the battlefield, but also take the paladin and bladelock with him once per rage

Weird thing I noticed looking at the new rage feature compared to the old one, you can no longer end your rage on your turn. The 2014 version said you could end your rage as a bonus action, but the 2024 version seemingly doesn't say anything about actively ending your rage.

Brutal strike sounds like it will be useful in many of the same situations where you would want to be doing grapple shenanigans, especially if you double it up with one of those two masterise I could easily see using it to keep people from being able to leave the stupid, or just pushing them back into it round after round. As for the lion feature for the totem warrior I wish there was some wording that would let reach weapons extend that beyond 5ft for polearm builds, such as enemies within your reach or with the range or your reaction attacks. That said I tended to have a less mystical interpretation of those features and more of a hey really scary berserker is screaming and keeps trying to hit me with a weapon interpretation.

I had a barbarian who used a scimitar and a shield+half plate. he was playing an ancestral guardian barbarian and would only reckless when he was over half. Very tanky and super good at locking down the big bad and making it miserable to get past, he planned on taking sentinel but the campaign ended before he got the chance.

My knee-jerk reaction to Primal Knowledge not allowing Persuasion was to just allow it by houserule, but I'd forgotten this feature is also giving them advantage on the check. Makes sense they'd want to shape this feature in a way that tells the barbarian player not to step on the toes of the party face, but on the other hand, what if the party agrees they're cool with the barbarian being the party face?

On the Rage of the God's Revification: "When a creature within 30 feet of you would drop to 0 Hit Points, you can take a Reaction to expend a use of your Rage to instead change the target's Hit Points to a number equal to your Barbarian level." You said it's like using Relentless Rage but for your allies instead, but unless I'm mistaken I see nothing here that says you can't use it on yourself. So if you fail your Relentless Rage saving throw, can you expend a use of Rage and your Reaction to use Rage of the Gods and stay up?

I really wish there was an unarmed weapon mastery... I know they're ot technically weapons but they have put a lot of work in to make sure a lot of martial features work with unarmed attacks (the fighting style has also been added since 2014 and tavern brawler improved) it they've found a new way to make it less optimal lol.

In the books, Conan never used a shield nor did he ever use a two-handed weapon. He did use a bow in one story, but his main style was TWF, with some single weapon stuff when he had to.
