Hi Jose, I moved to Mexico back in May '23. We stayed about 4 months in Puerto Morelos, but thought we might like Merida better since the access to goods and services would be much better. Puerto Morelos was nice, but getting certain things was not really as easy as in a larger city. I've been watching your videos (along with others) for quite some time, and they were helpful in giving me important information prior to making the move. I drove from San Antonio, TX with the help of a driver from Querétaro who was awesome. It was a bit of an adventure, but we made it in one piece, lol. So far we are really enjoying Merida, and are currently renting a 3 br house in Francisco de Montego. It is convenient to most everything we could want. Anyway, I wanted to say hello, and thanks. Keep up the great videos!

I could get by comfortably in Oaxaca on $500-$600 a month. But I found a cheap, but decent, room with its own bathroom, private entrance and excellent wifi for $150 a month. Didn't have a kitchen, ate out all the time, still very reasonable living. But I don't party, don't drink, and am fine with limited space and furnishings. Walked everywhere with an occasional very affordable cab ride. Big treat was watching a current movie in English at a nice theater. Otherwise entertainment consisted of walking in the always interesting Oaxaca Centro or surfing the internet. Peso was about 19:1 when I was there. My lifestyle isn't for everyone but if you're a bit of a minimalist then Mexico is much more affordable than the States.

I have lived in Guanajato for 4 years, my costs are about the same. Gas for my car has increased, the US dollar is worth less. I spend the same. Food, Utilities, etc. are about the same. You can rent a new studio apt here including utilities, internet, cable tv walking distance to the large supermarket for $200.00 monthly, no lease, month to month. Thats about as good as it gets any where in the world. A single person can easily live here for well under $1,000.00 monthly. If you are on Medicare San Diego is a short flight away.

All depends on your situation here and how you lived and prepaired before you came. My wife and I spend about a thousand US a month for our basic repeating expenses including food, alcohol(a lot), gas for appliances and our car, electricity and internet. That includes maintaining a large filtered pool and running a washer and dryer. There are the occasional yearly expenses like insurance, taxes etc. that are on top of that. Also, we have treated water from the tap and all three bathrooms are paper friendly with modern plumbing. So basically it's about how you set yourself up before deciding to move. We've been here since '09 and live in Centro, Santiago near the parque...a good spot.

Thanks for the update!! Awesome content as usual!! What I would add is that the cost of rent and where to live depends on one's situation as well. For instance, being a woman living solo in México, cheap rent and living just anywhere is not necessarily the best option. I am not afraid to consider the barrios in Guadalajara, yet, common sense has to be factored in. Either way, as you say, we all have many options available to us. For me, if I want to scale down on my budget, I could rent a room and co-house with others. Gracias Jose for all you do!!

Glad the video was helpful! I do need to make another update soon. Sure Mexico is still much more affordable but it all depends on the area you want to live in and what your personal expenses are. Rent which is by far the largest expense most people have is still much more affordable here in Mexico than in the US or Canada. You also get much more bang for your buck out here in Mexico. But as for other expenses in some cases they are starting to get just as expensive as the US. Thing is that in Mexico salaries in many places is keeping up with inflation which is not really happening in the US these days. I could go on and on.... So I think I should just get working on that update video instead 😅 Thanks for sharing with us!

Rent in Merida is at least three times cheaper than it is where I'm from (London), but I haven't noticed any real difference in supermarket prices. Some supermarket items are even more expensive here. Eating out is in general cheaper here, but it's still very expensive considering what the locals earn. In CDMX, you can eat out more cheaply simply because there are so many places catering to locals, whereas in and around the centre of Merida everything seems touristy and priced for people with money. Given the speed at which Merida is changing, in 5-10 years I can see it becoming a city for well-off foreigners and the Mexican upper middle class.
@JoseArteagaTravels

The reality is that rent in Merida just like CDMX and any other city will have its expensive neighborhoods and more affordable ones as well. Right now in Merida most of the Wealth is concentrated in El Centro and the North. With that being said there is still plenty of affordable living in the the East, West, and especially the South. Even in 10 years time there will be parts of the city which will be labeled and less desirable and in turn still be affordable. Even though CDMX is over priced, if you go out far enough from the city center you can find affordable housing in less desirable areas. Thanks for sharing!

I just spent a month in La Paz, BC Sur. It was exploratory. Did it make sense to relocate from Detroit, MI? I hold dual citizenship, am bilingual, and have dozens of cousins in all of the right places and ancestors that are NATIONAL heroes so that's not a problem. The answer was... no. I own a great 2500 square foot home in Sherwood Forest that I could never replicate in Mexico. My taxes (after refunds) are about $1200 a year. I had visions of purchasing fresh produce in local markets for a fraction of what it cost in the US. Where did I wind up shopping based on quality and cost? WalMart and Sam's Club. What were the deal breakers? As follows: 1) the national police that got me for about $150 on a totally contrived speeding charge (I was going about 50 mph on the main highway to Los Cabos and the speed limit in the middle of nowhere suddenly dropped to 25 mph). If I had argued my son was going to miss his flight back home to work so I paid la mordida, 2) an attempt of the car rental company to upcharge me (I refused), and 3) damage to the car by local thugs while I was snorkeling that cost me $300 (they wrote Se Feliz! - Be Happy - on the rear window). I also have a complete, 1200 square foot, high end woodworking shop that I could never move to Mexico. Good luck, but better the Devil you know than the Devil you don't.

I lived in Ann Arbor in my youth after moving to the Calabasas/Malibu area of LA county after college in Florida and am quite familiar with the area you live in. Where you live is one of the more expensive areas to live in Detroit or the entirety of the US in general. Just being realistic you would have a hard time finding an area similar to there anywhere in Mexico and probably would have an even harder time fitting in including finding friends that you would find to be on your same level. BTW - Your three "deal breakers" are somethings that just don't happen on a regular basis. Except for the rental car scams that happen everywhere else in world.... I live in Mexico and am very happy I'm here. Buena suerte!

What will happen if I tell the officer, “Tengo una condición médica que me impide usar casco”.
@JoseArteagaTravels

I'm sure you can see in the video plenty of people without helmets. No one enforces anything and if they do the most they can say is leave the park and you can go to another skate park. There are others around town

I'm pretty sure you've heard the old saying "The only thing to fear is fear itself" I don't care where you live in the US, comparatively speaking you really have nothing to be afraid of living in most of Mexico. Come down and visit. Maybe get a friend to come with you on an exploratory trip. You will be pleasantly surprised. A few things you should be wary of- Don't flash your cash, be wary of pick pockets in the tourist areas, watch where you are stepping because of uneven streets, sidewalks and stray dog gifts but especially be aware of the tacos... they are addictive! If you aren't in a cartel or looking to join one and hone in their business you have nothing to worry about, beleive me they aren't after you or your SS payments. Crimes are not as random here as they are in the US where you could get robbed or shot pretty much anywhere you go. It's very easy here to just stay away from the well known areas to stay away from. Buena suerte!

A lot of people in the construction trades have opened businesses in Mexico, in particular, Merida, where I'm interested in moving. If you develop a clientele of expats, you can charge them gringo prices. Some will be grateful not to have the language problem - if you're competent. Getting tradespeople who are competent can be a major problem in Mexico.

I pay $200 a month for heat and electric. $65 a month for internet. I live far away from eeryone and everything and spend at least $200-$300 a month on gas. Unlike Mexico there is no place I can walk to. My daughter pays $2300 for a 2 bedroom apartment with a $400 heat/electric bill. My niece tells me how dangerous Mexico is. There are places in the US where kids get shot in elementary school. I like the idea of armed police! I sleep with a Glock in New Hampshire..."Live Free Or Die" yeah right! I think Mexicans are a lot more family oriented than Americans. Those days are over here in the US. Oh and if people want to live in New Hampshire , bring a shovel for the long winters!

Sorry but it seems all you hear only about are the bad things about Mexico. The violent crimes that happen here don't happen everywhere. It's not as random as it is in the US where it happens on a daily basis throughout the entire country. Here it mostly happens only in the areas where there is cartel activity and they are well known areas to just stay away from so it's really easy to just avoid those areas. If it was as bad as you and apparently your niece believe it is don't you think you be hearing about it every day from Faux news? Before retiring early and moving here, for decades I have camped and surfed on remote beaches with never any problems. Yes, I've had numerous times where our campsites where approached by truck loads of machine gun toting cartel members who just wanted to see what we were up to. They were all pretty much nice guys once they realized we weren't there to interfere in their business or associate with those who did. Because we were in the middle of nowhere with no stores or towns nearby, we've actually had many times where they would come back by to give us water, food and beer. Sometimes they would just come by to use our fire and cook us dinner and laugh about how scared we looked when we first saw them pull up in their trucks!! BTW- As I type this message to you it's a Sunday and I can see and hear the local kids laughing and playing in the streets with their parents sitting and socializing with their neighbors on their front porches. When I walked back from the organic fruit, juice and vegetable stand they all waved and said "Buenas Dias" with a smile to their blond haired, hazel eyed gringo neighbor. I love living here!!.Buena surerte y feliz ano nuevo !!

Hi Jose, there is another American KZitemr that I watch, Tangerine Travels, that is also married to a Mexican and lives in Mexico, he also has made a video of all their bills going up, especially his wife's private health insurance doubling. So my question to you is this, do you think it's getting easier or harder for the average Mexican to afford their lifestyle in Mexico, being that the inflation has made the price of everything more expensive? My wife is from Mazatlán and she hasn't heard of her friends complaining about cost of living going up, but Mazatlán is doing well with all the investment in building new homes for people who want to retire there. My gut says, there is more opportunity for Mexicans to get jobs in Mexico, but I think with the more pay that they're getting, it's getting eaten away by the inflation that you mentioned, just like in the U.S.

That's a great question! Too much for me to get into right here, but i talk about it a lot in my livestreams and other videos. Long story short the average Mexican is doing much better economically each and every day. It is not like the USA at the moment. More Mexicans are making more and the rate of inflation is not going higher than what they are making. I will cover this subject more this year and talk about it more in depth. But if you just see this video or others I have on my channel you can see it with your own eyes how good Mexico is doing compared to the USA. Since I have been here all my Mexican friends are doing much better now then when I met them, and its only going to keep getting better. Looking forward to talking more about this subject soon!

I don't know if you have spoken about this before on your videos, but I think it's interesting, according to my Mexican wife who is 43 now and worked like 19 years in Mexico. She has told me that people like around her age and younger will no longer get Mexican Social Security (she calls it a pension) and the best thing that one can expect from the Mexican government when one retires there, if you're a Mexican citizen that works in Mexico for like 20+ years, you will given a basic house with a low mortgage payment of like a $200 for 30 years, which the person given the house still has to pay. Does this sound correct? I'm just wondering, comparing MX to USA, bc I'm surprised to hear that MX isn't offering SSN to their citizens anymore, that are like around 43 or younger. Granted, who knows how much longer we will have SSN in the U.S. for, so that's why we save for retirement.

At the beginning you mention that some people don’t have a problem with cost there which I think really depends on their previous experiences they’re used to paying much more perhaps they’re from Cali which is notoriously verrry expensive. Or they’re fairly well off and always paid top dollar in other places in the US . Me I’m just Joe six pack and I would really feel the difference between the two countries. Is there much difference or not for just basic things like food , utilities , rent that six pack I mentioned lol 😂

Well I can not answer that for you in the comments section. Best advice I can give you is watch more of my videos for more information. I was just a blue collar working class individual in the USA and always struggled to make ends meet, yet here in Mexico I only need to make around 1,000-1,500 USD a month to live more comfortably than I ever did back in the US. Again we are all different and have different expectations as you mentioned but what it all boils down to is the individual and what they consider most important. It still baffles me how Americans and Canadians move out to Mexico and say that they spend over 3,000-4,000 a month.... when a typical Mexican spends much less than half of that a month at most.

@@JoseArteagaTravels Rodrigo, I would add a disclaimer. If you have an American wife expect your budget to be exponentially more.

Get real!! Try doubling that budget for US expats.

It really all depends on your own individual way of life. If you require more luxury then yes of course it will be more expensive. I know plenty of Expats who live out here on much less than 1,500 a month. I am also an American and I don't need over 3,000 USD to live here.... thats almost as much as you would be paying in the US. Again this is why I make these videos to educate those on what the true cost of living is in Mexico. Not everyone is looking for a fancy lifestyle. Some people just want a roof, safety and a higher quality of life, and i can assure you that it can be done for around 1500 a month.

You still repeat yourself so many times that you could cut your videos to half their length and make them easier to listen to.

That is why I drive around or walk around the city so that people can just put me on mute and enjoy the scenery. I am not here to please everyone, just trying to make the best videos I can for those who find them useful. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

A potential employer is offering to cover cost of rent and utilities (gas, water, electric, internet etc.) Would 8000 pesos per month be enough to live on for one person?
@JoseArteagaTravels

All depends on what your personal cost of living is. But for most Mexicans it is. If you are single and live frugally then yes it's enough if not then I would say you might to also get another income stream

@@JoseArteagaTravels Thanks for your reply! I don't buy expensive clothes or go out for very fancy meals, I'm a pretty simple person although I do enjoy the occasional trip to the cinema. I sometimes like to buy certain organic ingredients or food but not a lot. I also enjoy street food and mid-range restaurants from time to time. In your opinion what is an average price range for groceries per month for one person?

If the cost keeps going up i am afraid for the average mexican people and if the violence doesn't go down then i start being horrified for the average mexicano. Everyone i talk to tells me to trust no one and im like well that is a given but then i see everyone not trusting anyone, people are cold to others when they dont trust each other and what does that creat? The coldness creates more distrusts. It is a vicious cycle, a revolving door of distrust and coldness that creates more distrust. This is the only part of mexico that has saddened me since being here. I hope it gets better not worse. This is a great place with great people but it is over shadowed and it doesnt take a rocket scientist to realize it. You say "certain areas" and what i found is that certain areas become you. I still love mexico though. I want to see more of the country but keep getting warned about going south or going into areas. I wish there could be more trust but i guess they watch too much chicago fire.

Things are not always what they seem. Most Mexicans are very happy and even though certain things are going up in price they are also making more money. You can listen to what others say and take their word for it, or go see it yourself and find out the actual truth. Either way from my experience Mexico is safe and wonderful and very inexpensive if all you care about are your basic necessities. In the end it all depends on you the individual. Thanks for sharing
