I was gifted a 7 day Alaskan cruise on Royal Caribbean for my college graduation years ago. It was the best experience of my life. Clean air, picturesque views and the best salmon I’ve ever had in my life. I encourage anyone to just go and don’t look back.

Ketchikan is my hometown. July and August are certainly NOT the rainiest months in Alaska. Hahaha! In October we get an inch a day on average. The only tours that cancel for weather are flightseeing with fog and boating if the seas are really bad. If it’s pouring down rain the tours WILL NOT be cancelled. Bring your own rain gear, nobody uses umbrellas in Alaska (except tourists) because it often rains sideways. Don’t count on a tour company’s rain gear. It’s not guaranteed to be dry after the last tour. BRING WATERPROOF SHOES. The logging show was built for tourists and those guys aren’t from Alaska at all. The Misty fjords flight seeing tour is worth it! The train out of Skagway is a good one too. Only go kayaking if you want to get a workout - the tides are powerful. Go sport fishing! Totem Bight has a more natural totem park setting - if you don’t dock at ward cove then that tour bus will take you past the cannery and if the fish are running (mid-June or later) there will be eagles EVERYWHERE. If you want to see great tide pools get a cab/Uber to Buggy’s Beach. That’s where the locals go. And please. PLEASE! Buy local! Many people in Ketchikan had ZERO income for 21 months when the ships weren’t sailing. Tourism is the main economy. Covid DEVASTATED this town.

My wife and I were fortunate to go on the inaugural sailing of Ovation to Alaska in May of '19. It was an week and a half with two glacier cruises as well as some less common ports. For my taste, Icy Straight Point and Sitka, while they have options, are 2nd tier ports that maybe consider for a 2nd Alaska cruise. Skagway is a MUST and take the train!!!, Juneau is Nassau of the north, a lot of shopping but there are some really good options for tours (seaplanes and glaciers). Ketchikan is the one we missed out on that will be on the itinerary for my next cruise.

I went on my first Alaskan cruise 11 years ago with Disney. We did a whole bunch of excursions and unfortunately they've probably doubled if not tripled in price since then. I'm super excited for our trip in may this time on Royal Caribbean. Since the short excursions are so incredibly expensive I think we're going to try to find our own adventures this time. I have a drone and would love to use it in Alaska but I think it would be more of a hassle then anything else since Royal Caribbean does not allow you to use it anywhere around the ship or in the support area. Most drone videography can be found on the Internet anyway. I will say, the hardest part open Alaskan cruise is putting down the camera and just taking in all of the marvelous beauty through your own eyes.

There are two “formal” nights on each cruise. You can choose to go to the buffet instead if you don’t want to dress up, but I like them because it’s an opportunity to get some nice family photos-as well as just an occasion to dress up! Tuxedos are NOT needed. My husband wears a suit and I wear a cocktail dress or sometimes a long dress.

We went late Sep2021 last minute. It was amazing!!! Not much in the way of excursions was available, only one ship (us) in every port. We got to see the town and culture. Take time and do a quick look at what to do in each port. Sitka had great indigenous museums w/ native docents as well as other finds. Juneau, NPS Mendenhall Glacier ($20rt shuttle) gave us security of return and time to check out the town vibe. Skagway, the train’s half tour (due to construction) gave us time to check out NPS and other sites. Dress in layers, allow for a rain coat/windbreaker. We had a blast, no rain all week, the ship was at 30% capacity…Enjoy! We are going back in Aug for all the bucket list excursions, and train again, which will take us away from towns this time. We do plan to take the Alaska train, Anchorage to Fairbanks, in Feb 2024 to see the Northern Lights.
@lorenadugan6355

@@syndychinny8661 The Royal Caribbean Shuttle takes you into town to a nice Welcome Center. It’s worth a quick look. There is a shuttle bus to the right when you exit the building. There is a sign. We made no reservation, just had our $20 cash each, and waited in a line. They run every 30 minutes and drop you right at the entrance to the park. There is a city bus for 4.50 but you have to walk 1.5 mi to the park entrance (and back). We felt that wasted too much precious time. We didn’t trust Uber/LYFT because we were not confident in our cell service when surrounded by ice and mountains. Plus, there is a labor shortage everywhere. The $20 seemed the most reliable option for us. You might Google it because I suspect the ports will be slam busy this year and perhaps you would benefit from a reservation, if available. Walk the mile or so (paved, handicap accessible trail) to Needle Falls, check out the exhibit inside the NPS center (bathrooms). Have fun!

Great video! Our next family cruise will be Alaska (to be booked once all the COVID mandates/restrictions have ended). My spouse and I truly enjoyed Alaska in 2003, and it remains our favorite cruise itinerary of all time! Now we want our kids to see it. Our favorite part was sitting on our balcony while going through the inside passage, watching the beautiful scenery go by. We're very interested in trying a Quantum class ship for this future cruise, but my understanding is that the Quantum class ships don't spend as much time in the inside passage because of size of the ship. Is this true? Thank you for the info!
