After being discontinued in the U.S. several years ago, Toyota's Land Cruiser is back and all-new for 2024.
This new version is based on the Land Cruiser Prado, a smaller version of the full-size version that we no longer get here. It's just over an inch shorter and 4.6 inches narrower than the LC200, the last Land Cruiser sold in the U.S.
Three trims will be available: the base 1958 edition, the standard Land Cruiser edition, and the limited First Edition.
Under the hood is just a single powertrain and it’s a hybrid! This new model uses the same setup that’s available on the new Tacoma pickup: a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a small electric motor for a total of 326 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque. It’ll be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel-drive.
Inside, this new Land Cruiser is a five-seater only. The base 1958 edition comes with an eight-inch color touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto connectivity, while the mid-grade Land Cruiser trim and the First Edition get a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.
That base 1958 version also gets black cloth seats, while the Land Cruiser gets faux leather seats that are heated and cooled up front, and the First edition gets real leather.
In terms of off-road prowess, all trims have a center and rear locking differential, there’s skid plates all around, a standard hill descent control, and a Crawl control function that essentially works as a low-speed cruise control with five pre-selected speeds. Finally, the Land Cruiser trim and First edition trim add a front stabilizer bar you can electronically disconnect with the push of a button and a multi-terrain monitor system that uses the interior infotainment display to view obstacles on the trail in front of them.
Safety is handled by Toyota's standard Safety Sense 3.0. This suite of active safety tech includes pre-collision alerts and braking with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control with full-speed capability, lane departure alerts with steering assist, and lane tracing assist.
If all this sounds good, budget in the mid $50,000 range when it goes on sale in Spring 2024.
