Unfortunately I don’t think a hybrid diesel is a good idea as diesel engines already have enough problems with their diesel particulate filters especially when used for short trips and not properly loaded for lengthy time periods. A hybrid would prevent these ideal use conditions which is probably why Toyota never puts diesel engines in hybrid vehicles . I would consider a hybrid system like they have on the new Nissan Xtrail even though this type of hybrid cannot be as efficient as the Toyota system I prefer it as it eliminates the need for a gearbox though in the case of a proper off road vehicle like the a Prado you would probably still need a two speed gear box to to serve as a high/low range option.

the 2.7l petrol na engine is definitely the 2tr-fe . it is one of the best petrol engines toyota has ever made . it is so reliable that barely any information exists about it and they have been putting this in their cars for two decades now. it does consume a lot of fuel and lacks power but it will go on and on without any major maintaince . 300k 400k is nothing for it. it does a million miles all day long. 2.8l diesel is ofc the famous 1gd-ftv and this is the first time they have done mild hybrid with it. they should have deficiently bumped up the hp of that engine. tuners easily make 250-300hp from it without even touching the engine. it is again another awesome reliable engine. some early versions had issues with egr. t24-fta is also another great engine and has proven its reliability in recent years. all in all every engine option is good and directed to specific type of customers. those who like simple easy to work on cars that will go forever then buy the 2tr-fe or 1gd-ftv .. those who want more power buy the t24a and those who want even more power buy the lc300 with v35a!

That means there is a hope for new Hilux, Fortuner and 4Runner to have a some sort of rugged design like this. Never liked their current design. But i do really wish the next gen Fortuner would adapt the same macho ruggedness like our 2012.

I think the hybrid system will eventually come to Australia. I think Toyota knows that the American market loves their petrol engines over diesel engines so they want most of them there, and once they have an idea of the amount that they would have to produce then they will plan to bring it to market here. That's my theory anyway.

It’s our emissions laws that prevents us from having the diesel. Some stupid tariff or something regarding diesels from overseas. I would much rather have a Toyota diesel but we can’t. So.

@@Zachman1124 the iForce Max is going to blow the doors off that slug of a diesel, and get similar fuel economy! People will always prefer what they can’t have, however.

Trust me the toyota diesel is nothing to write home about, ive worked with them for many years, Youve been sold a lie about how great they are. Imagine a small engine in a big truck, slow, dirty, underpowered, you have to motivate the ass off them ie floor the shit iutta them in order to get them up and going. Where as the petrol v6 and v8 you just lightly press the pedal and away you go. Having a larger engine working less hard is smarter than a tiny 4 cylinder turbo with a crap diesel particular system hanging on for dear life every single day.

@@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi oh, I totally agree. I have that knowledge too but it doesn't change the fact that us Aussies love our diesels. Toyota damaged their name with the 2.8 diesel and the particulate filter. I think the 3.3 diesel should be the minimum in any LandCruiser or even the Hilux.

Shame there's no petrol hybrid option for Australia, i would have ordered for sure.. definitely not interested in the existing 2.8 old tech diesel.. hopefully they see sense and give us the option.

It was sounding great until what engines Australia was getting and the price … no big deal not getting a V6, a quality turbo 4 with 80 Klm plug-in Hybrid would be perfect - unfortunately they didn’t even upgrade the 2.8 diesel to at least 165 kw and 550nw.

Looks great, however my V6 petrol Prado has only done 170,000 trouble free kilometres, so it us barely run in and l will not be changing it. I trust the new model will still have the 150litre fuel tank, one of Prado's best features.

Looks great but that engine choice for Australia is disappointing. Sadly it's a no for me!
