Change is coming to Porsche’s iconic 911 for 2025. Along with subtle styling tweaks to its exterior and interior, the 992.2-generation 911 brings electrification to Porsche’s rear-¬engine sports car. Though most 911s will usher in the electrified era by way of a 48-volt electrical system powering an integrated starter-generator that complements the brand’s famous flat-six engine, the model line will eventually add a high-voltage gasoline-electric powertrain option to the mix as well. Expect the hybrid powerplant to make its way to the 911 sometime after the 2025 calendar year, likely bearing the name T HEV.
Said to be co-developed with Rimac (in which Porsche holds a 45 percent interest), the hybrid system incorporates a 400-volt electrical system, an integrated starter-generator, an electric motor that propels the front wheels (and can produce around 80 to 90 horsepower), and an approximately 2.0-kWh battery that’s replenished by either the gas engine or regenerative braking. In all, the electric-propulsion components of the powertrain reportedly weigh under 60 pounds.
A 395-horse power twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six, modified for hybrid duty, covers the gas side of the equation. Expect total system output to come in at about 475 horsepower. Alas, the powerplant’s complexity means so-equipped 911s will forgo the option of a manual gearbox. Rumor is that Porsche is working on a punchier hybrid option with a total output north of 520 horses, enough to plug the performance gap between the 911’s GTS and Turbo trims, both of which will also see significant powertrain changes.
Internal documents we’ve seen indicate that the GTS and Turbo will ditch the 3.0- and 3.7-liter forced-induction flat-six engines of today for a new twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter unit. A naturally aspirated variant will eventually step in for the screaming 4.0-liter of the current GT3, GT3 R S, and S T. Look for the 3.6-powered 992.2 GT3 to come online for the 2027 model year. The 992.2 Carrera and Carrera S models will keep the twin-¬turbo 3.0-liter engine for now, albeit with slight bumps in output.
A true battery-electric 911 is still some years off, though, with such a powertrain not hitting the market until the next decade. It will likely come with the 998-generation 911, the replacement to the 994-generation car due to debut in 2028 as the successor to the 992.
Thank you so much for joining us today.
Until next time, keep chasing your dreams and embracing the thrill of the road and drive safe.
