Great job & I love the Ultradeck for several reasons . . . it looks fabulous, color coordinates with the fencing, prob won't rot in our lifetimes & seems relatively easy (though I'd guess screwing in all those T-clips was a bit time-consuming) to install. The only thing I would've added is some type of marine-grade fabric mesh below the gapped decking to minimize upspray, although with a 10-pony motor, that's likely not a problem. I'd say a 40 or bigger motor would need some under-deck fabric & I realize that would've added to the cost (I found some for $15/yd x 54" . . . which means a couple more C-notes for two 7- yd strips) plus made it difficult to work only from above but I still wouldn't want passengers/gear getting splashed. Nonetheless, excellent 'toon makeover!

I swear I'm listening to Nicholas Cage talk about his pet pontoon restoration project here. :D Great idea for the decking, I hate the idea of putting wood down near the water where it's always nagging in the back of your mind that it's getting wet and slowly rotting away.

Just don't drop anything on the deck while on the water that'll fit through those deck boards, like jewelry, change or keys, you'll never see them again.

Great job first of all! But I hated to see all that work you did turn out like my back porch deck! No one said to put the boards on 16 inch centers I did 2’ centers. First thing day after I got it done , the UPS man fell through it. Then my wife fell through two days later! I then took it all back off and put 2 x 6 pressure treated back on! Lesson learned the hard way! Good luck!

Nice job. I wonder if aluminum sheeting under the beams would stiffen it up some and stop any water from coming up through the decking. Let us know how it lasts. Thanks for posting.

Nope! Looks real pretty but based on my experience working with composite deck board the first time you bump a dock you’ll break rip the rub rail off and the cleats on your corners are pretty much useless cuz they’re only as strong as what they’re screwed too. The kids will love the water splashing up through the deck though.

Man, a router or a rotozip would have made that trimming down the outside deck for the trim a breeze and would have been so much more consistant. The finish product looks good though.

What's your opinion on using the tongue and groove plastic deck boards vs the marine plywood? Seems like the floor would stay wet from the waves, splashing of water and the wake coming up from the bottom?
@blick5815
3 жыл бұрын
Instead of sanding/grinding down the top along the edge for the edge rail and then bending the bottom rail you could have just used a router or even chopped off at a 45 degree angle the BOTTOM of the board. It still would have fit tight and would have been hidden by the rail......... I’m not not a fan of the gaps inbetween the boards either.......

While you had the frame and pontoons bare you really should have cleaned and buffed the toons. The boards really should have been butted together for water splash. Not really a restoration as much as it's a repair. Nice job though, I'd go fishing on it. Thanks

Product requires minimum of 3/16" gap.
@allaire123
2 жыл бұрын
Gap needed to use the hidden fastener system. With a 10hp on small lake splash is unlikely to be of any concern. My concern would be the span between the Galvenized cross braces, composite lumber typically requires less distance between deck joyces as it's not as rigid as wood and tends to sag.

Interesting. Why didn't you clean up (brushing, sanding, polishing, etc) the frame and pontoons before installing the decking? With everything removed, it was obviously the perfect opportunity to do so.

Does it make it harder to mount other things and feel secure? I feel like Marine ply is pretty solid compared to plastic. Still a great idea. Would love to see how it works out!
@RockThisTown2000

I'd guess for heavy stress things like a single-pedestal table or chair, you'd need to also need to include a round support piece of marine plywood underneath in order to spread & shift the stress from individual floor boards to the support. Probably don't need extra support for that steering console & the bench seats - not much lateral stress on those.

The plywood adds a structural integrity your deck boards never will, you will be putting all the twisting forces on the cross members. Don't take anyone you like out on this rig.
