Ah! I cringed a little in the 1st video when you said an AMD processor for your nas. AMDs put off a lot of heat (which requires a decent fan) and can consume a decent amount of power. AMDs are great processors for budget gaming rigs but for a NAS I think I might stick to an older i3 or i5 processor. Doing the 16GB of ram for the ZFS also probably eats up your electricity too. I think you're right about the GPU saving you money in the long run. That box looks pretty on the outside but on the inside it looks a little cramped? Does it get hot in there? By the way you might look into unRAID software as an alternative to NAS4free. In addition to having storage pools and not relying on the ZFS memory hog file system it allows you to run virtualization OS but without the GPU you might have performance issues running 3D/GL/DirectX inside of your kvms. You might also be interested in BTRFS as an alternative to ZFS. I personally hate the GB per TB memory rule for ZFS as you end up with a ton of memory and for home setups you usually aren't going to be utilizing all 20TBs of your space at once. Another side note: the big benefit of ZFS is "data integrity" to protect against bit rot but the memory you got is not ECC so that could be a potential problem. I could be wrong though. Anyway... thanks for sharing the video. I always like to see what other people are doing in their tech bubbles.

btw, what do you think about freeNAS?

if you have intel hardware, FreeNAS is great. It's basically the same as NAS4Free as they were both made by the same people at one point. Check the plugins for freeNAS as that's the big differentiator between the 2. Drive prices has come down even here in SG since I bought mine, so it shouldn't bee too bad, I hope. As for advice, go bigger than you think you need.

Thank you for the awesome guide. I'm getting ready to build my first NAS to centralize all of the family's media and I'm confused about the plex discussion. Are you talking about running plex on the nas or a plex server being able to access the nas? I running my plex server on a ubuntu rig and just want it to access the nas. Thanks in advance for answering my noob question. cheers

So what I mentioned was in regard to NAS4FREE having a service built in to setup a Plex server on the NAS, like it has services built in for samba shares and BitTorrent. If you're running a Plex server already, pointing it to the NAS shouldn't be very difficult as content will just be an address on your local network and Plex will just need the address.
