Man you win the prize for the best shootout video I have ever seen. Great feel on the guitar, cool songwriting, great video editing. I have a DSL 20 and feel like it held its own, except when you went for the more dissonant chords (which I loved). It also struck me that the plexi model seemed to sound the best on all the playing styles, chords and single not or double stop type riffs. I actually played a combo version today and loved it. I bought the SV20H a year ago. It's my ninth Marshall amp and the one I like the most so far. It really is a great and versatile amp if you don't need channel switching. It's got a really great clean sound and the overdrive just can't be beat in my opinion. When pushed hard it goes almost on the fuzz territory. It's also a great pedal platform if needed. The only thing I wish is that it would have that same vintage look on the rear panel too.

I was listening to how the Plexi didn't have that upper "fizz" on that classic crunch tone. Really like that! The 800 and the 252H both sound like the gain needs to be backed off a hair, almost like a blurry image where the plexi and surprisingly the DSL both sounded clearer yet still had that great Marshall crunch...very cool. I think also if they weren't back to back like that you may not notice, but in this demo i heard it right away

IMO, having owned one, the Origin isn't in the same league as any of these. I found mine to be the thinnest, lifeless Marshall I've ever experienced. Absolutely no balls to it whatsoever. Volume? Sure, plenty of volume, but useful? Nah, not at all. Effects loop was also the worst I've ever used. "But the cost!" well if you want the Marshall aesthetic as a decoration, you've got that. It looks pretty good. "Nails that plexi vibe." No. No it doesn't. It doesn't come remotely close. I thought for sure that I could eq it, and use any of my pedals to get me into usable tone - nope. I also couldn't get any bass out of it. Tried every cab I own (1x12s, 2x12s, and my beloved basketweave 4x12 loaded with the excellent Hellatone 25s) with it all with the same result. Put alongside my JTM45, it's just not even a fair fight. Yes, the JTM is much more expensive, but there's no changing the facts. The JTM is what a proper plexi sounds like. The Origin is the worst amp I've ever owned, and I've owned a LOT of amps over the course of my 30 years of playing. Hear that chunk, that chug (albeit in the plexi vein, of the SC here? THAT is what you want.

@@stratolestele7611 really? I’ve gotten some pretty convincing tones out of my 50 albeit I’m running 6CA7’s instead of EL34’s. Running through a slightly deeper 2061cx clone with v30’s. I turn everything up except the bass which I keep at 9 o’clock. Gain is around 3-4 o’clock. Presence is up for extra bite and the tilt is used as a generalized EQ adjustment. Boosting the front with a morning glory, low gain and high treble and it sounds pretty nice. Obviously not a jtm45 or plexi but it gets in the ballpark when dialed in.

I like all of them, amazing comparison video! I had to listen at a low volume (it is late around here), because of listening at a low volume I noticed that the 2525H was the one that cut through the mix best, also noticed that it was probably because of the very rich mids it has, sounded huge even thou my volume was very low. Man, such a great comparison here - Thumbs up! Marshall is so reach in harmonics and has the most recognizable tone by far if comparing to other amps! All Amps sound great in this video, for me personally Silver Jube is the BEST fit for its flexibility and an ability to follow each of his small brothers tonaly with only a few potis' moves. It is such a great amp, guys! I own the 2555X for this very reason, I'm probably still yet to discover why Bonamassa, Frusciante, Steve Morse, Slash and bnuch of other guys are using Jube. For now, I know that you should first let the amp run for 10 mins for tubes to warm up, then plug in a really good attenuator - yeah, Marshall is a Marshall and needs to be pushed with at least 70% of the power to reach to an optimal working point for power tubes. I did it this week after owning Jube for 1 year with no attenuator - this is a totally different beast now! Playing at home / small stage / gigs guys with 50W even (can reduce power from 100W to 50W) is still like a thunder in a quiet forest! I tell you, SPL Cabulator + Marshall Jube = perfect combination! ..and I own also Marshall Vintage Modern 100W, DSL 2000 50W, couple of other brands. It seems like I will always come back to Marshalls, despite the fact there is a number of such great amps nowadays - Marshall plays with a roar, with such an overwhelming tone like only a few others can. "If I stand in front of my Marshall and my balls aren't shaking, I ain't satisfied". This is what I remember from Kerry King playing his JCM 800. Rock on!

All sound very good. I have an original 50 watt jubilee combo and a 73 100 watt head. For all around natural tone I still lean towards the 4-input Vintage amp. Some times the Jubilee can sound a little to dense and the natural clarity of the guitar gets buried if you are not careful. But, the Jubilee is a more varied when you put a pedal in front of it, much easier to get a balanced voicing at lower volumes.

They all sounded great however.. I did find the SV to have more rounded dynamics sponge and quack!. Really moved me more because due to the lower gain I believe the voicing of the notes had more character. I have always been a super high gain dude in my younger year but learned over experience less gain can actually create an impact of heaviness due to clarity in tonal shaping. I like to use an mxr micro amp in front of the pre or other gain pedals for the option of higher gain without boosting volume or changing the color of the existing tone.. Peace!

I can tell you right now that not all JCM 800's from back in the day came with "EL 34's". Back in the mid 80's through half of the 90's, I had a 50w JCM 800 combo with 2 x 12's that came with 6550's. Then I bought a brand new 100w JCM 900 2 x 12 combo that did come with a quartet of EL-34's. ( The ONLY reason I bought the 900, was because a music store in Orlando Florida was giving an incredible discount that was hard to pass up. ) I finally retired from the club scene after gigging for decades in 2002. Just recently, I demo'd the Marshall SV-20 ( mini plexi ) at a local shop, and was blown away. It had the tone I had been searching for my entire working musician career, and I love this little plexi far more than I did either of my JCM 800 and 900's. In my opinion, this little plexi ( SV-20 ) is the best darned amp Marshall has ever made for real world working guitarists. Man, does it sound sweet. It's the real deal.

@Just J Those are many of the same observations and experiences I have negotiated with Marshalls over the years of tone chasing :) I think the Boss TAE (Tube Amp Expander) with its own supplemental effects loop might be the way to go for these old Marshalls - of course any solution you can put together with an external load box, external loop, etc. will work. Also, the ‘Circle of Tone’ KZitem channel just did a great Iron Maiden rig rundown featuring Marshalls with dirt boxes getting smoking hot, iconic, and even modern high gain tones. I started out with probably the best Marshall I could ever hope for back in the day - a 1977 JMP 100 watt with matching 4x12 loaded with 30 watt Celestion’s. Deeply regret selling. My brother and I went through a bunch of Marshalls, including having them modded by local amp gurus like Andy Marshall of THD amps, and a few others. Had some great tones - in retrospect, probably didn’t appreciate them enough! Currently own a 50 watt Plexi on a rare 8x10 cab (kzitem.info/news/bejne/sZ-sqa19oISIrZg) Cheers~

I've got a Code 100W head i run through an old '87 Marshall cab, just to listen to KZitem videos. I have a soft spot for the JCM coz that's my head of choice (for guitar) since I'm 21. Yes i fart dust kids! Anyway take what you like from this idea & expand on it, there's way more tonal possibilities out there. To my ears the Silvr Jubilee came through the best (but i could be clinically deaf too!) Protect your ears folks! By the way i like the piece you came up with for this! 🤘 Hats off to ya, most KZitemrs aren't this ambitious! That'll take you far!!

Well done! Excellent side-by-side comparison! I currently have a DSL15H and have been looking at the DSL20H as I've heard it's an upgrade to the 15 in terms of tone, etc. But I have to say, of all the amps here, I like the SV20H 1959SLP the best. Very clear and transparent, you can really hear everything played whereas the other amps sounded slightly fizzier/fuzzier/darker in comparison.

If you have an attenuator, you can get a pretty good plexi tone by cranking the green channel on the DSL 15. The only big issues with the 15 is the lack of an fx loop, and the fact the red channel has way too much gain, there’s a gain reducing tube you can get for its V1 position and it made me pretty satisfied with mine.

They all sounded great. The DSL held its own just fine. I wonder if the components are higher quality in the UK made Marshalls. Anyone know?

Probably not so much higher quality but just different. The studio amps are based on vintage designs so they would have more vintage spec components and the dsl would have more common modern spec complaints so difference in components is more down to design.

A bit surprising, but I liked DSL most! Amazing comparison!

Fun fact dial off completely the resonance from the dsl20 and you’ll get instant vintage Marshall tones! Ive set mine this way! Resonance is completely off and I’m controlling the spikiness of the amp via the presence knob! 👌

I´m suprised how good the DSL sounds compared to the "classics" - for half the price. At least in this video....

DSL series gets a bad rap because of how shitty the earlier JCM 2000s were. DSL is actually a really great sounding modern amp. Kind of a more compressed JCM 800

That was my thought as well, the clean parts are good but most of all the ultragain part is quite impressive

Impressed with it to the degree that I'm really considering switching my Randall RD20H for the DSL20! One important thing is that most listeners pair the 800 with iconic performes. Who had their JCM's heavily modded-hot rodded a good amount of cases, and I think the DSL deivers that pretty much! One guy here on YT made a DSL sound like Iron Maiden Powerslave album tone without any added pedal or EQ so... it is not a mere modern take I'd say :)

DSL! The JCM800 sounds amazing, but being someone who has limited money I'm picking the DSL every time. Best bang for your buck and it has a more modern sounding top end which I really like.

Agreed. I have the puny dsl1 and I'm seriously impressed with the tones and volume you can get out of 1 watt with a 12" cab.

I got the DSL 20 and a 2x12 cab and I couldn't be happier. It just sounds great to me with my Les Paul and my Jackson.

Great Video and comparison, much thanks! For my money, I'm buying the DSL. I've been debating which 20 watt amp to buy and this pushed me over the edge. :)

At clean channel they are sound almost the same. Most differences begins with gain level up. Thank you for this good review. I have DSL20HR and really like how it produces sound in single and with preamp. Also his emulated out - cool feature for silent playing in standby mode. 2525H's Classic Crunch sounds very good. Worth the money.

Also noticed how similar the SC and SV amps sound, especially at crunch/lower gain setting on the SC!

My understanding is that they're actually very similar under the bonnet - A JCM puts two two channels of a Plexi in Series rather than having them run in Parallel (there's a wee bit more too it, but that's the gist). There's wee a bit more to it than that, but that's a very high-level overview.

2525h is the best in a band context. It just cuts through so good.
