Did a lot of wiring in an injection molding plant that had following 3 phase voltages: 208, 240, 480 & 1 area 575 volts. Made sure to keep each voltage in its own conduit and marked every box with voltage & what panel feed it. Also worked in some old plants that had 2 & 3 phase. For 240 volt 2 phase they marked one phase with red tape and other phase with blue tape.

I've always seen pictured of red and blue for 2-phase. Living outside of Philly, I've never actually seen 2-phase myself. I was in Philly a few months ago, but with COVID it obviously wasn't a great time to try to go sight-seeing.

Where I am in upstate NY our utility company and inspectors have standardized on Black/Red/Blue for 120/208/240 including high leg delta being identified as Blue; 277/480 is Brown/Orange/Yellow with the Orange identifying the high leg, of present though 277/480 is typically only supplied in wye. Neutral and Ground can be grey/white and green/bare/yellow-green striped respectively. While code is the minimum the utility and municipalities have unified more strict standards, which are nicely identified and can make working across the area easier.

I’m from California and I was confused about some of the colors being used I was going to ask are you from Canada ? If not I could see you and electricians move from state to state electricians would Bring their knowledge of colors with them and use what they were used to in the new state they started living in. I just subscribed you got a new subscriber 👍

So why don't they enforce colors coding? Most industrial installations I have seen do conform to BRB for 120/208 and BOY for 277/480. There are many things in the NEC which border on ridiculous but a standard color code seems to make good sense to me.
@RyanJacksonElectrical
3 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that there are thousands of facilities that don't follow that color scheme. In many areas, for example, brown, purple, and yellow is used for 480. We limit the use of white, gray, and green, everything else is up to the installer.

I agree. Some stuff makes you think about the Van Halen/Brown M&M situation but no color code.

I don't prefer using BOY for 480/277, I prefer, and it seems common here in Texas, BPY. I reserve Orange only for high-leg systems.

Hi guys, here I have a hypothetical scenario. I am in doubt, I hope you can clarify this to me. Suppose we have an effective ground fault current path, an excellent 8 copper EGG, suddenly someone who didn't know much about electricity decided to change the EGC to another type of EGC material with an impedance of 9.5 ohms, but the phase conductor is an excellent 8 AWG wire and has an impedance of 0.05 (9.5 + 0.05 omhs = 10 omhs) Now there is a ground fault, 120V ÷ 10 = 12 A, but the OCPD breaker is rated 30A, therefore it does not trip, now we could say that we no longer have an effective ground fault current path because the installation does not meet the code requirements for the EGFCP definition. The question is: Would someone be exposed to receiving an electric shock if he or she touches the metal enclousure of a load? or Could we assume that the installation continues to be safe since the neutral and EGC are linked together at one point (MBJ)? What would be the load metal enclouse voltage to earth? 0 V?

Customer: I plugged my printer into a new outlet and it started smoking! I check the voltage at the receptacle and it is 277v! The guy who did the install never checked the voltage at the panel. The panel was a complete birds nest of rainbow wiring. What a cluster!

What about switchlegs? Can I use red and blue for 277v switchlegs? How do they get away with pink and purple or using 3wire or 4wire for travelers in mc? Does 210.5(c)(1) not apply to switchlegs? Thank you.

I mean I would not spread the news about the wire colors not being code. I have always learned black,red,blue 120v and orange,brown,yellow 277,480 because color would definitely help with understanding which voltage you are working with
@RyanJacksonElectrical

So you think people should be told that is a code requirement when it isn't? Using colors instead of a meter is a good way to somebody killed.
@bb-ct5np
3 жыл бұрын
@@RyanJacksonElectrical of course a meter should get used but I work around a lot of high voltage and 110v and the way you are around and plan for high voltage is way different then 110v even before you work. A personal should atleast have an idea of the voltage is before being anywhere around it or having there hand near it. I never said don't use your meter I said to have a baseline color wire to give you a heads up before you get close enough to meter it because accidents don't only happen when working on it.

@@bb-ct5np So, again, you think I should tell people that there is a specific color code when there is not? Sorry, I'm not going to do that. That is a good way to get somebody injured or killed.
@bb-ct5np
3 жыл бұрын
@@RyanJacksonElectrical so again so having no color coordination is worse. That's like saying people are less safe because they say a neutral has to be white or gray or identified white or the ground has to be green. When I have seen them carry current for diffrent reasons. But it's still universal to make them white and green.

Does neutral HAVE to be different, or only ungrounded conductors? Ie. I am working in a facility where BOY-Grey- Green is being used throughout for 480/277, BRB-White-Green for 208/120; however there is one 120v circuit with Blue/Grey/green; should that neutral wire be marked with white tape/paint?
@RyanJacksonElectrical

They need to be different ONLY if neutrals for different systems are in the same box, raceway, cabinet, etc. [200.6(D)].

Its called the national electrical code It supersedes all other standards from. Cities. Counties, coops. Etc.... But most cities, counties us the NEC as there standards. So if you go to the county ex. They will have a copy of there standards

If Joshua wasted Company time making a box look all pretty like that, his ass would be grass. That’s a one-way ticket to the unemployment line in my books.
I have an idea ( so the nec doesn’t run out of nonsense to over complicate) And folks like you get to keep your job. Let’s use a different color wire for every device. Maybe each device should have its own breaker and it’s own panel. We can build a dedicated electrical panel house. Yea, that’s an idea. Serious note. I’m pretty sure we have all of the major kinks in the electrical systems worked out. It’s been pretty damn safe since 2000 I feel like all of these new codes are just being nitpicky and are only created to justify somebody’s job. Things like A required amount of receptacles on the kitchen island. ( God for bid us electricians are allowed to use any common sense) The whole thing is just getting ridiculous, and nobody is talking about it. They’re just playing along like all of this insanity is normal. The electrical code book is going to look like the tax code in 10 years. We are all going to be wondering why we are trying to do a pretty simple job But we have to refer to, and know about, Section 5, article 9 360.01 Blah blah blah. I mean, what is the ultimate goal here? Keep selling books or make safer homes?
