I want one of these cells with the associated electronics to be released as a kit as a retrofit option for older devices. I know it won't be pretty, but I'm getting seriously tired of replacing AAA and coin cells, and also having to replace entire devices when the junk cells leak.

ah so so you moved your facility from one super high labor cost area to the highest labor cost area in the world.. My bet is that you moved only to be in what many consider to be in California.. not for the labor but to just pay a bizzilian in taxes

Hopefully that Logitech MX 3 mouse he held up can be improved with his tech. I have one and I dislike having to charge it.

Should call it a photonic cell. Solar means sun.

Sounds like a great product but they do seem to have overlooked a very common scenario.... How do you charge the remote when it's being "stored" in the back of my couch? 😉 😂

I want to ask about the solar cells and if they have unique environmental concerns. I know pervoskite cells have lead concerns and must be recycled properly.

New Samsung remotes have solar panels on them. One thing that does worry me is the longevity of the cells. I personally use rechargeable NIMH cells in everything and haven't had one fail yet (using Mostly GP's and Eneloops).

If a remote like this adds $2, then I don't the free market will adapt it. Might require EPA or Energy Department mandating it. .

Already seem to be in the market. Friends bought a new TV and the remote does not have a battery. Was a selling point.

These products don't make sense to me. They still need rechargeable power storage they just switch the charging to solar rather than cabled electricity or wireless induction. I would have thought medium range induction charging, from say your Wifi access point, would have made more sense.

Think about the drawers full of broken cables, duplicate cables, plugs, etc etc. and now think about ambient solar replacing all those cables and induction panels etc etc. This ambient solar doesn't just make it convenient to power up small devices, it reduces the landfill waste of broken tech.
@daveh6356

@@colinwiseman wireless charging does that already. I reuse cables between devices or sell them with the device so I don't have this charging cable drawer of despair you're talking about. Our AppleTV remote uses the same cable as our AirPods, iPads & iPhones. This is a solution to a problem which barely exists.

I know he said that these mini panels won't charge a phone, but smash a bunch of these together on the side of a window frame (inside) attached to a battery. Charge the battery up during the day, discharge into your phone over night...

adding them to cellphones might not make a huge difference, but even if it offers a trickle charge, that might help make a difference in emergency situations. Or maybe a solar charging station, for emergency use. Just a thought.

Thank you for doing this interview. I was very excited to hear about the ways that this new technology would be implemented, and was so happy to hear you mention home sensors. I use rechargeable batteries throughout the house, but I would gladly pay a small premium for home sensors that don’t require new batteries every year or two.

Fun fact, we're imagining a multi course meal in which soup is served first before all else and the final dessert is a snack of nuts, thus "soup to nuts". Also, to remember how to spell "dessert" vs "desert", remember that with the two esses in dessert you can make "strawberry shortcake".

Don't believe everything you read. If CA was against business, you'd have lots of commuters leaving the state every day.
