@@marillion1 sadly true! John Barnes could have lead England to the final in 1986, I wondered why Robson was keeping him on the bench well before the match against Argentina. And Peter Barnes...he was unlucky, never selected for a great tournament, as wingers apparently went out of fashion. But seeing all matches from the 70s you can't deny how good he was.
@gunternetzer9621

@@frankwells7520 Barnes was not up to the highest international standards and don't say he didn't have enough chances - he won 79 caps but only scored 11 goals. All he ever did was score that goal against Brazil and make Lineker's against Argentina in 86. My abiding memory of him is towards the end of the match against Holland at Euro 88 when he couldn't even kick the ball properly or pass it 5 yards to a teammate. Then at Italia 90 he played like he had lead in his boots.

@Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf Aids Yes you probably have the same criticisms about the game (and society) in general that I have...... It's impossible for this generation to realise what was thrown away in the name of political correctness and the like....they haven't worked long enough, invested enough into this country or built up a business, bought a house etc etc...it's easy to give away what you never owned in the first place. Beckham had skill but the birth of the posing footballer was upon us. Look what some of these young players are up to during lockdown (allegedly) It's about money, social media profiles and not about football that's for sure. Take it easy buddy.

Absolute nightmare to qualify for 1978. Only the top team in a group of five went through. We finished level on points with Italy- but ultimately undone on goal difference and not hammering Luxembourg like the Italians did. Losing to Italy away didn’t help either

good point, yep in the 1980 Euros Greenwood for some reason excluded Bryan Robson from the final team which i think cost England in the very tight match against Italy that they lost 1-0 when they started to get overrun in midfield..they were too narrow in midfield and also dispensed with the services of Peter Barnes moving away from two wingers, Clough would have got so much more out of this team in the late 1970s and early 1980s..

@@gregod806 Ron was the best English coach ever but unfortunately the England job came about 10 years too late for him and he'd lost a lot of energy and was disillusioned with the game by 1977. He studied continental methods years before anyone else and West Ham won the Cup Winners Cup playing like that. He also coached and brought on Hurst, Moore and Peters without whom England would not have won the World Cup - they didn't play like average English players and that was down to him. The only problem with Ron was that he was too nice and could be persuaded at times against his better judgement. Between1978-80 England played better than they had in the previous 10 years and with a bit of luck might have won the European Championship in 1980. He did more good for English football up until he retired than any other manager and that includes the overrated Ramsay.
