@@EagleEyeShooting mr2000 gives good velocity. CFE223 gives more but so I’ve read at a price of accelerated throat erosion. Certain bullet manufacturers won’t list it in their load data for that reason. All that said, you’re only averaging 30 grains of powder give or take a couple depending on the projectiles. That’ll only do so much. If I want more from a .22 cal I pull out my 22 Creedmoor or 22-250 . Hornady brass typically last me so if you’re loosening the primer pockets in one of two reloadings you’re just too hot. It’s a small cartridge for what it accomplishes

The cartridge I designed is primarily for use in an AR15. The ease of reusing a factory loaded 6 ARC ammo by just removing the factory projectile and replacing it with a 80gr Berger not only achieves 3140 FPS out of a 22inch AR15. But also holds 1 MOA at only 7.3 MRAD at 1000. You can see this in my latest video 22 ARC vs 6 ARC. Thas enough to justify at least for me, a better route than 22 grendel. If I wanted to go with a fullsize 22 cartridge, the 22 GT or 22 Creedmoor would be my choice. Again, this was primarily built for an AR15 platform to match the ballastics of a 6mm Creedmoor bolt gun. This will give me and my partner a competitive edge in team sniper matches

If this cartridge takes off, there is potential to use dedicated 5.56 suppressors where 6 ARC tends to exclude some that are not designed for above 5.7 diameter bullets. Recently, flow-through suppressor tech has been making headway, but require even tighter bore dimensions for performance. If these type of bullets can retain a high coefficient, some loads may be good candidates for dedicated suppressed SPRs.

IMO the 6 ARC was a mistake. Constrained by the M-4/AR-15 Mag length and bolt thrust limitations of the platform, I believeHornady was in a rush to get something out the door and, in their rush, omitted several important steps. The shorter headspace prevents 6 PPCs or 6 Grendels from being chambered because their pressure levels would very possibly blown up ARs. Mil spec bolts are already known for failure with 5.56 ammo. That’s why inspection for bolt cracks is a part of the normal cleaning routine. A stronger, redesigned bolt and barrel extension cold have resolved the issue. You’ll notice there are a number of companies offering AR bolts with improved metallurgy. Time will tell, but we haven’t heard anything about the reported government entity which purchased the 6 ARC. With the Army’s recent selection of a new platform and cartridge I doubt we’ll hear any more about the 6 ARC except in the civilian market.

Unnamed DoD snipers who were tired of all the issues with SR-25s wanted an AR-15 platform Light Sniper System that could deliver increased lethality at extended ranges, without causing them problems inside the house in terms of maneuverability, muzzle blast, and mag capacity, and wouldn't reduce the life of their LAMs and TWS systems like an SR-25 or SCAR. They did the initial concept tests with 12"-18" 6.5 Grendels through a series of practical application shooting scenarios based on what they were seeing overseas. After these scenarios, they were asked, "Would you have preferred an SR-25 in 7.62 over 6.5 Grendel in any of these instances?" The end users unanimously said no, not in one single instance. Hornady told them they could tweak it a little and make it better. Because Elander magazines were prominent in the testing, they limited the COL, which is what drove Hornady to move the shoulder back 0.030" so loaded cartridges would not drag the tips against the inside front wall of the thicker Elanders. 6mm ARC was never meant to be a commercial cartridge, and was kept secret for years for those end users within DoD. What prompted its release to the commercial market remains unknown.
@richardbriscoe8563

@@LRRPFco52 6 ARC was & is a mistake. Hornady conceded as much. It should have had a redesigned (stronger) bolt and barrel extension to deal with the bolt thrust. Apparently there was too much of a rush and so a “parts bin” gun was built. We have not heard much about its employment which suggests it wasn’t all that well received. The only reason for the reduced headspace was to prevent the chambering of, for example, a 6 PPC which would have exceeded the allowable pressure levels of the platform. Even in SOCOM logistics is an issue and I doubt it was worth the trouble. Also overlooked is an off-the-shelf hybrid AR system which maintains the lighter weight compared to the SR-25 and has a receiver/magazine length which can accommodate 7.62x51 length cartridges such as 6/6.5 CM although such an arrangement still has the additional weight of the ammo to deal with. Personally, I don’t think this was a terribly well thought out project.
@LRRPFco52
10 ай бұрын
@@richardbriscoe8563 If it was a SOCOM program, we would be able to see the budget for it and at least 2 SEALs would have mentioned it in books. I’ve been shooting 6.5 Grendel regularly in multi-day courses since 2009, and have yet to experience these widely-reported (by 6.haters) bolt failures. We even shoot rapid-fire strings suppressed from 12” CLGS Grendels with high back pressure cans. If the metallurgy and processes are done correctly, the bolts hold up just fine. Ability to stay on-target in the optics with 6.5CM and 7.62 NATO is a non-starter and you still have all the problems in the house, plus mag volume/reduced soldier’s load. 6mm AR had already been running fine for years in AR-15s, so it isn’t like Hornady was marching into uncharted territory with 6mm ARC.
@richardbriscoe8563

@@LRRPFco52 There’s a big difference between a bunch of target shooters/varmint hunters and troops in the field. If you calculate tha maximum average working pressure of a 5.56 times the area of the case head you get the bolt thrust which becomes a constant. Dividing that by the area of a PPC case head is how you wind up with 50-52k psi for the 6 ARC. “Pressure signs” people are accustomed to using in bolt guns don’t show up at those pressure levels. When they do the load was too hot some time ago. The quality of the material and it’s heat treatment do make a difference in the service life of an AR bolt. The failure of “MilSpec” bolts in line infantry units is documented. People tend to forget that MilSpec is a *minimum* standard. Everyone believes (w/o confirmation) that Hornady’s “undisclosed government agency” is SOCOM. If they had found the 6 ARC to be particularly useful I believe we’d have heard about it. Things that don’t go well are often the ones with the least public info. Texas DPS introduced a new sidearm into a class of prospective troopers in training and then promptly withdrew it. No info. The Marine bought a bunch of Colt 1911s and introduced them in the sandbox. They could not get arid of them fast enough. What the problem was remains unknown to the public. I used to be in touch with the guy who, in conjunction with Doc Palmisano and Knight, developed the 6.5 Grendel. He had been shooting a 6 PPC in NMC competition. The Grendel met with a chilly reception at DoD because it was presented as a proprietary cartridge and there was no way DoD was going to pay the asking price for ammo. It was DOA at DoD. If I were to do something like this I would be more inclined to do a 6x6.5 Grendel (There’s a variant called the 6 Grinch and several others.) the simpler solution in my view is a 6x5.56mm with an 85 or 90 gr bullet. Some years ago the Army nearly adopted the 6mm SAW which was basically a 6x5.56mm with the shoulder pushed back some. IMO it should have been adopted. All that would have been required is a barrel change.
@LRRPFco52

@@richardbriscoe8563 6 ARC is nowhere to be found in SOCOM's line item budget for small arms funding, development, or acquisition. SOCOM isn't the only SOF element umbrella in DoD, nor are they the impetus for where small arms developments originate. Civilian competitive shooters run a much higher round count than most of the military. I've been doing both for most of my life, spent 1993-2016 on either active duty or working with coalition partner nations in NATO dealing primarily with small arms training, sniping, and Reconnaissance. 6mm SAW was nothing like 5.56 NATO, totally different cartridge with larger case head, capacity, COL, and really long high SD projectiles. Yes, I've broken 5.56 bolts running extreme high volume compressed shoot schedule at over 10,000rds packed into a short window of time on that bolt. The problem with the Mil-Std 5.56 bolts is the HPT requirement. 6x45 suffers from lack of high BC projectile compatibility in the AR-15 mag COL. The problem with this topic is most people think you're talking about 5.56 replacement, when you're really talking about an improved light sniper or DM cartridge that really covers down on 7.62 NATO territory.

If all wildcats or commercialized saami wildcats where all labeled 220 Russian, imagine the confusion the gunsmith will have figuring out which one will work for the client? The names are easy refrence for the small iterations that *can* suit the needs of the shooter. Instead of the negativity, thank the folk and our freedom for having so many choicez

@@EagleEyeShooting I more than understand that, as I've probably been wildcatting since before you were born. Most of my wildcats were for short range deep woods hunting of large to medium game. My first was a 9x30 based off of the 10mm Magnum necked down to 9mm/.357 depending on what barrel was available and selection of bullets, that was chambered in an M-1 Carbine, then there was the 6.5 BR based off of the 7mm BR, shot that out of a Remington XP100, then the 9x39 a year before the Russians did it. and then a 10 x39

Once again you have out done yourself. I just have one question, how is the round tracing compared to the 6mm ARC.

so great work thank you ! How much difference is this compare to 224 grendel ? I looked around and found a few places can get grendel barrel. I hope some barrel MNF can be interested if you picth it up to them

I can actually use this same reamer and headspace the barrel with the 6.5 Grendel go gauge. The 22 Grendel is roughly .030-0.050" longer shoulder length. I found converting 6.5 Grendel brass and necking it down to 22 was a tough process. Using 6 ARC brass and converting to 22 Grendel required fireforming and left the neck length really short. This reamer is tight on the neck dimensions however, id have to test if 6.5 brass converted to DPC will fit

Must provide a bit of satisfaction to see Hornady go all in on the 22 ARC (which appears to be similar to your 22 DPC) I'd be interested in a follow-up to see what the actual differences are.

22 ARC has a longer case than 6mm ARC, so more case capacity. Ogive lengths on even the long .224 bullets aren't as long as 6mm VLDs, so you can move the shoulder forward.

@@LRRPFco52 yeah I missed it's based on 6.5 Grendel, simply necked down to 22 as far as I can see. Appears uses the 6.5 Grendel go/nogo gages.

I have had a issue with hand loads on my 6arc. Chambering smoothly, and sometimes neck tension
