30:20 "Flash mob"? Did he mean flash sale? Or was he suggesting a scenario in which a flash mob literally inspired a spike in demand?

Horizontal scalability with smaller nodes is trendy because it's more cost effective at scale when combined with auto-scaling. Small machines allow you to maintain (say) an average excess capacity of 5% since machines are small vs an average excess capacity of 50% for larger machines. To say it another way... if your demand is a curve, auto scaling is trying to fit the curve. A smaller step size allows for a more precise fit to demand, just like step size in integral calculus. A more precise curve fit reduces both overprovisioning and underprovisioning.

With consistent hashing, I think issue is that if we add one more node for load balancing, we don't know where that new node will go in hash ring. Just plain range partitioning is good. We can move ranges as desired. Consistent hashing is good for cache layer. For db storage layer, making copy of data from replica as soon as a node is down is better approach.
