“I don’t understand these symbols” “Why did they use THIS symbol for THAT word?” “These pictures make NO sense” “ I HATE this symbol”.
Have you ever looked at LAMP Words for Life and had these thoughts? There is a good reason for this! Each symbol on LAMP WFL has more than one meaning. The icon of the APPLE does not speak the word “apple”. The icon represents semantically related words around the concept of eating, and food, and processes connected with food like growing, chewing, smelling, tasting, plus all the food nouns.
This video series was created to help YOU, the communication partner, better understand the organization of LAMP WFL, and HOPEFULLY reduce barriers you have experienced while learning how to support your AAC communicator. IMPORTANT: AAC users do NOT need to learn and master these icon meanings and associations to become effective communicators.
MORE ABOUT MINSPEAK: In the 1970’s, Bruce Baker, a linguist and the developer of Minspeak™, became curious about AAC systems and the people with disabilities who used them and he believed he could develop a better way to organize and visually represent language.
Single meaning iconic representation of words has limitations when designing an AAC system and Bruce used his background in linguistics and married it with the emerging field of computational linguistics to create something very special, Minspeak™. Language is organized based on semantic relationships and a single icon has multiple meanings and associations. This allows you to have a large set of words represented by a relatively small set of icons and buttons.
LAMP Words for Life ® , developed by John and Cindy Halloran, is an innovation of Bruce’s original work.
