Ukrainians in Cyprus organized protests dedicated to the second anniversary of full-scale Russian invasion into Ukraine. In the video a speech of Ukrainian activist and the head of the Community of Ukrainian-Cypriot Friendship at the protest in Limassol on 24.02.2024.
The full text of the speech: “Today is a date that has become one of the darkest days in the calendar for every Ukrainian. For two years, Ukraine has been suffering from a full-scale war with daily bombings of the entire country's territory by rockets, bombs, and kamikaze drones.
But for Ukrainians, the horrors did not begin two years ago, but eight years before those teo. It was just convenient for the world not to notice the invasion, not to call it a war. The world found it "not so straightforward." Perhaps it's human nature that we only see things clearly when the occupiers' boots enter our yards, when they rape and kill our children, sisters, and mothers, claiming to be the "second-strongest army in the world." The lack of punishment for torturers and killers does not stop their appetites, does not pacify aggressors, does not calm their lust for seizing more and more.
Dictators and torturers around the world closely monitor how the world responds to aggression, how quickly it becomes accustomed to killing and raping in a neighboring yard, how tightly it shuts its eyes, covers its ears, refusing to see, hear, or think.
The war in Ukraine continues. And the civilized world must help not only because Ukraine suffers for the values of democracy, humanity, and freedom, although that would be reason enough. The world must help because it needs to draw logical conclusions from what is happening. Russia was not stopped earlier when it invaded Georgia, South Ossetia, Ukraine in 2014, Syria, and that's why war in Ukraine bursted again in 2022. It happened because Ukraine is the closest and most appetizing piece of the pie for Putin's dictatorial regime. When Ukraine and the Ukrainians defending it are gone, dictatorial regimes around the world will understand that "it is possible." The occupiers' boots will be knocking at your doors, dear Europeans, civilized and technologically advanced countries in Asia, and most likely, there will be no escaping the big war even across the ocean. What was once distant and insignificant will become a problem for every inhabitant of our planet.
Helping Ukraine now is not charity, not mercy, not a favor. In fact, Ukrainians are dying right now so that Europe can continue living its usual life, with the luxury of sipping coffee and pondering that perhaps the world is not as straightforward as it seems. Time is running out, Ukrainians are running out. If we don't help to the maximum of our capabilities now, tomorrow it will be your sons defending your lands and families.”
