Great memories from the 1970 LeMans 24 hour, driving the NART Ferrari 312P , The lack of pit straight barrier allowed some great pics and excellent video. cheers tony a2z Adamowicz

1970-1971 Some of the best years at Le Mans-ever! The cars were FANTASTIC, a lot of the world's top drivers were there and the racing was amazing. I should really include 1967.... the year that Gurney and Foyt took the chequer. That year, lamost everybody was there. The Golden Days of Sports-Prototype racing; not only at Le Mans.

Merci.

That was a special year, great to see King of Cool himself Steve McQueen and the ‘Le Man’s’ film car - Porsche 908, and all the other wonderful actual race cars - Lola T70, Chevron- BMW, Alfa T33, Matra MS650. The weather looked miserable, but with all these gorgeous and exciting cars it looked like paradise to me as a young child, truly a golden age of sports car racing that was sadly drawing to a close as the oil crisis impacted during the early 70s.

The white 917 longtail driven by Elford/Ahrens Jr (car no.25) was the first 917 fitted with the 5.0 litre engine and a five speed box. Vic Elford said the car could max out at 250mph on the Mulsane Straight. That's unbelievable for 1970 and still very quick even by today's standards.

I know that the 917 LH n°21 had a measured speed of 391 Km/h in 1971 ( 242 mph ) , so why not ...

@@vitakyo982 I think jackie oliver drove at 398 km./h. by night with gulf n.18. For 1972 porsche was making a 16 cylinder and the can am turbo with 900hp. They could go easily over 400 k/h

No it had the 4.9 litre engine, none of the 917's had a 5.0 in 1970. The other longtail that finished 2nd had the 4.5 like the winning Salzburg car.

Love this. I was seven years old in 1970. Talked my father into taking me to see the movie "Le Mans" four times! Interesting to see some of the cars not shown in the movie, like the #3 Porsche long-tail and the yellow #12 Ferrari 512S.

L 'epoca d'oro delle corse Endurance. 1966/1971. Piloti famosi che correvano insieme a gentleman drivers, ma tutti veri "cavalieri del rischio". Sport-prototipi e GTgr.4. Un gran bel documentario. Complimenti all'autore.

Great images even more with my slowly evolving understanding for that overexciting era and years ... in addition to the more obvious and wellknown facts .. I am also thrilled with the appearance and story of the chromeyellow Greder Racing 7 Litres Corvette . she really shines in all the films of that 70 Le Mans gathering 🌷:)

Eyes like a hawk :). I have also read the then new Matra 660 featured a Monocoque construction whereas e.g. the 917 was built on a tubular frame from Aluminium. Matra Racing really is a fascinating story within an overall breathtaking era.

The beautiful number 57 Ferrari 312P Adamowicz car could have been something special in its coupe guise as here. But Ferrari had already moved on to the 512S design (a few famous examples here) by the time they adjusted yet again to FIA rule changes. With constant irritating FIA rule changes and early 70s oil crisis, it’s no surprise that Ferrari dropped out of the WSC by end of 1973 to focus on F1.

They just had a rotational speed indicator (rpm), that went up to 8.000 rpm to shift at 7.000 and a shot of a pistol later at 8.000 rpm or more they overrounded the enginge. They didn´t have a speedo *maybe when they were lucky, but in most cases they had to ask the engineers at which rpm in which gear the car went which speed. But what they knew was, with the indicator at 7.500 rpm, 4th, or 5th gear(*which was depending on the car), they where around 340 to 380 km/h fast, which would be 212 to 236 miles an hour!
