One thing that's really struck me recently is how many times I've heard other women (from a variety of backgrounds! North American, Asian, European, South American, everywhere) say "Because I was raised in (name of culture or ethnicity), I was socialized to compromise, put others first, prioritize the comfort of men, not be loud, not speak up for what I want or my ambitions, etc" and I realized I've never heard someone say the reverse. It seems that the majority of cultures across the world are set up to teach women to crush our own dreams so that men have space to do whatever they want at the expense of us living our full personhood and dreams. Anyway, I think it's great that you went on a solo trip! I recently did the same and it was a good time.

Food for thought. We all grew up in a society where women are socialized to prioritize others’ needs. Not saying this is men’s fault, but I think it’s up to all of us to change this. I would love to see more women take time for themselves and speak out for what they want, and men to be supportive of their partners/women around them. Thanks for sharing!

I think it’s our collective job to do this - both men and women have different responsibilities & also important to parent our children with updated narratives. Women crushing dreams to make way for men ultimately hurt women, men and children. Thanks for your video! I grew up in Shanghai and haven’t been back in a long time and it was nice to virtually accompany you. Sending

I’m a big fan of this sort of combo of both book review as well as lifestyle vlog!! I haven’t seen anyone really approach combining the two in this way before. There's so much to like in your videos. You do a great job of capturing the vibe of each area you are in. I especially loved the city walk where you pointed out the details of the buildings. The older, busy areas of Shenyang are my favorite. I could spend all day exploring. I don't like all the new ultra modern glass high rises. It does nothing for me. More coffee in the rain please....great clip! 😊

Hi dear. I would advise you to check the ingredients on the packaging before buying crackers, ice cream, sweets or nuts. There is this ‘E’ prohibited numbers in ingredients that you need to look out for. They stand for the types of animal meats, gelatins, emulsifiers, etc contained in the food. I used to buy assorted fried nuts. Thinking it was just a packet of nuts, I bought but luckily I read the ingredients on the packet just before throwing one into my mouth. The nuts were fried in pork lard oil! So, be careful 😊

As I live in Shanghai, this video was definitely one of the first I clicked on when I found your channel. It's always great seeing the place I've lived in for almost 2 decades through fresh eyes. I was so disappointed for you when you saw the meat in the noodles - my son loves those noodles too (without the meat). Instead of "buy me a coffee" you need a "buy me some noodles" donation link. I'd be too nervous setting up my camera across the road then filming from the other side, but well done for making the effort.

LOVED this vlog! 💌 I spent the early years of my life in Beijing and hope to go back there one day with my parents so we can trace back our old house and neighborhood etc, so this vlog felt like a glimpse of my past in some ways (even if it's a totally different city). OMG the cicadas are like the one thing that never seems to change about Shanghai (apart from the humidity of summer and the flocks of ppl of course, lol). As someone who was born in the city but moved away at such an early age, each time I visit again it seems like an completely different experience. Not only do I find new things but I also loose the old familiar places. Giant malls once bustling with crowds are empty. Posters and decorum of some long gone Christmas all that’s left behind. Many places we frequented are gone or refurbished beyond recognition. The apartment district I spend the first few years of my life in now seems aged like an old woman, paint peeling from the walls, skin crinkling. When we first moved in, it was our first brand new home. Now it is rented out to a strangers family. I think this passage of time is especially imminent for big cities. There is a melancholy in it but also excitement to discover new things at every turn. Shanghai will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved this vlog! It was such a comfort, thxx ❤!

Perfect timing! I'm planning my first visit to Shanghai next month, now I'll definitely add these to my itinerary: boulangerie avec toi (not on a Monday), Peace Hotel (was thinking I might skip it, but it looks gorgeous in your video), and 外文书店 (even though you said it was a bit disappointing, I'm not as up-to-date on books as you seem to be, so I'll probably find something new to me lol -- speaking of which, do you know any good international/English bookstores in GZ besides UN on 北京路?) I'm so glad you posted this video now! Oh, and I agree with you about traveling alone while being in a relationship. I just last week went to Guilin and Liuzhou without my spouse, and felt like it would have been more memorable if she had been there, but at the same time it was fun to focus on just my own preferences.

Glad you could find something useful from the video! Have a lovely time in Shanghai:) in GZ there is an English bookshop in the basement of 广州购书中心 in 天河, but I never bought anything there because although the selection was good the books were quite pricy. Most of the English books in China are actually imported through Guangzhou, so I order books I want on taobao (literally search the book title), and if the book’s in stock it usually gets to me pretty fast. I missed my partner very much too on this trip…but I do feel more in touch with myself and feel like I have grown from the experience.
