Thanks Jors. Know the area well as I was in school at High School Nico Malan in Humansdorp 1967 to 1968. Had many friends from Patensie and Hankey and in those years the station at Humanscorp was very busy. Those were the days !

It happens in the UK, Australia, Canada, America, all over Europe..... Ecclesiastes teaches that there is a season for everything. Aircraft with radial engines, big burbly V8s, ships with sails or reciprocal engines all had their day. Ditto AGA anthracite stoves or casette tapes.

@@Afriqueleblanq look at the state of our roads and the traffic of trucks on our roads, if we were still using railway to transport goods to the main hubs, we will have less traffic, roads will last longer and less accidents caused by trucks. like dont use steam trains anymore but use diesel trains. It would be cheaper aswell to transport truck loads of produce to the market or harbors for export

My father was the "engelse dominee" for Humansdorp, Hankie and Patensie from 1981 to 1992 so I know this area well! When he was studying to become a minister in Grahamstown (as a mature student), the steam train (the only train) used to come past my school (Graeme College) at least twice a day. I was still in primary school then and the steam train was the only train running when we left in 1978 (std 6 for me). Ai, memories!

Yes thats a Garratt 2-6-0+0-6-2 articulated LOCO. I heard that it was built like that for the light rail industry where the rails could not take the wheight of heavier Locomotives. There is one standing at friends of the rail Close to the PPC factory in Pretoria. I wish that they could restore it and I would love to help. Love articulated locomotives they are a rare kind.

Nice surprise. Yes very sad to see that train is not being looked after. I recall riding on the apple express as a kid. I wonder if my grandparents or dad ever worked on one of those steam engines as they worked in Uitenhage railways workshops. I was spoiled used to ride steam train to boarding school in Adelaide and my grand parents house looked onto the turn table where they used to turn the trains around. I sure must try go visit that train one day.

There is a lot of history in that train. i only learned recently that it also did regular passenger trips, i did not know that. I only had a couple of rides in it, but used to watch it a lot. I saw it offload oranges in PE harbor once.

I remember this train so we'll. my Aunt and Uncle lived in Walmer, Port Elizabeth - I was a border at Grey and every Sunday the trains used to go through. This is yet another example of just how the great legacy enjoyed by our great country has been eroded through a lack of vision and leadership. I also remember the opening of the Kouga Dam. Our school band played at the opening ceremony.

Hi Jors. Voorspoedige 2023! Mooi loop
