So called " classical " is the only True Chess , speed chess is a variant where time is given a huge importance. CHESS , real Chess is not about quick moves but deep moves. The GM you speak of has certianly played hundreds of classical games and been playing them from a young age.... " Slowwly morphing ..." ? Its taken his whole life.

@@IndigoBassNotesclassical is the best. When you beat someone in classical, you know it's a true victory because they had all the time in the world to do whatever. Other formats have a lot of time factor play into them. You can outplay someone the whole game and still lose on time or pressured to an error by time exhaustion.

I have definitely been in van Foreest's shoes, in the sense that I have been playing in a classical time limit, realised a serious mistake that cripples my position, spent 80% of remaining time trying and failing to find a way out and beating myself up for being so stupid. Result is there is no time for a 'spirited defence' so....resigns (and find the bar)

A few of the lines you suggest might be evaluated by the computer as slightly better, but you're bypassing simple and easily winning continuations. If black plays 15. ... 0-0-0, simplest is 16. Bg5 winning the exchange. In the final position if 24. ... Nb3, simplest is 25. Nb6+ with a discovered attack on the knight on b3, which forces 25. ... Qxb6 26. Bxb6 Nxd2 27. Rxd2, when white is about to win the a-pawn with the bishop pair and an overwhelming position. I think many grandmasters would opt for these lines to simplify the winning process over the more complicated engine lines you suggest. But what do I know? I'm only a FIDE Master.

@@dmitripogosian5084 All of 27. Bxa5, 27. Rxd2, and 27. Bxd8 are approximately equally as good. The bishop pair is strong and black's rooks are not particularly active so there's a case to be made for retaining the bishop, but it's a case of "six of one, half dozen of another."

I understand Jorden's resignation there. Equal material sure but it's just busted, he knows it, Nodirbek knows it, and the choice is resign on move 24 or suffer for a couple hours while Nodirbek converts the win. In his position probably he preferred to call it a day and have some extra rest for the next round.

There's also a super famous game between Karpov and Unzicker (you shouldn't have any trouble finding it if you haven't seen it already) where the game was decided with equal material and almost every piece still on the board (only a pair of pawns and a pair of bishops missing). Karpov locks the position so much that Unzicker can't find any move, and even ends up moving his king aimlessly to pass his turns at some point.

Thanks for that example of equal material at mid game in a game where black was seriously disadvantaged. However, it would require white playing with precision every move to accomplish the win. I have serious doubts that I could play with such precision that I could have won for white at the position that black resigned. The resignation was a show of esteem for Nordibek, because a weaker player would not necessarily have accomplished the win for white.

I think there are several causes like : Sleepping / food / Ilness / wheather / family problems / monney problem ... the life become so hard and chess become unsufisant for finance the chess player i think Magnus should required to increase the prize of monney not to reduce the time format ... at least increasing the prize monney in classical chess cuz it takes a loft of energy and time and if you see the chess community you will find they are so poor and most of the players can't buy even a chess course to learn and improve in chess, it's a shame.

There is that part of modern chess that large part of a strength of top grandmasters comes from incredible memory of openning lines, and they are more normal when out of the book of course each is different. Magnus makes a show now from illustrating this.

It is a shame when players resign when there are so many open possibilities (as opposed to forcing sequences) still on the board; admittedly, black was likely to lose, but such an early capitulation - without requiring the opponent to prove anything - cannot be good for chess.
@dmitripogosian5084
