ABOUT OCEAN RESCUE ALLIANCE INTERNATIONAL!
Ocean Rescue Alliance International (ORAI) is a science-based marine conservation and restoration non-profit organization that implements innovative techniques to restore marine environments. ORAI focuses on saving our oceans one reef at a time through the creation of artificial reefs and marine infrastructure strategically designed to enhance marine environments, build marine habitat, conduct restoration, protect coast lines, and connect communities through art.
These custom crafted reefs create critical habitat while providing a beautiful recreation area for divers to enjoy. ORAI's reefs are designed to incorporate art and innovative designs while utilizing safe materials. ORAI hosts a variety of programs to engage communities. Our citizen science programs under the ORAI Alliance such as the Coral Rangers, engages our local communities in reef monitoring and coral restoration efforts. Empowering and inspiring future generations to conserve and maintain our marine environments. Our research investigates artificial reef design improvements, applied restoration, coastal protection, fish population and recruitment to contribute to effective restoration.
ORAI's reef sites enhance marine habitats and protect coastlines while providing a unique diving location to serve both the public and our marine environments for generations to come. The ORAI alliance unites marine conservation and restoration organizations around the globe, helping us save our oceans one reef at a time!
CORAL REEFS NEED OUR HELP NOW!
Coastal and marine habitats, such as mangrove forests, seagrasses, and coral and shellfish reefs, are critical to a healthy ocean and provide many benefits to people. Ocean habitats around the world are threatened by pollution, coastal development, destructive fishing practices, over-harvesting, and the growing impacts of climate change. Scientists project that 90% of coral reefs around the world will
disappear by 2050. In Florida alone, more than 95% of stony corals have died in the past 30 years. Economists report that in South Florida, coral reefs have an asset value of $8.5 billion, generating $4.4 billion in local sales, $2 billion in local income, and supports more than 70,000 jobs. With continued losses in coral cover, the critical benefits that these habitats provide also slips away.
The good news is that we can save the world’s reefs and help them recover, but we need to act now. The next 10 years offer a critical window of opportunity to restore these once-thriving ecosystems. Together, we can help ensure that reefs not only survive today’s threats but thrive for generations to come. That’s where artificial reefs come in. ORAI artificial reefs are man made structures designed to resemble the characteristics and mimic complex habitat benefits of a natural reefs. These reefs help restore and replenish areas of the ocean, bringing back a thriving marine system. ORAI reefs combine grey (artificial) and green (biological) infrastructure by outplanting living species such as corals, oysters and mangroves on artificial reefs using various patented technologies. Innovations such as the coral lok allow our team of divers to outplant corals faster and easier with safer materials than ever before.
ORAI’S AMBITIOUS RESTORATION GOALS!
By using the latest restoration science and strong local-to-global partnerships to guide our work, ORAI seeks to build a better future for communities around the world who depend on reef habitats for food, income, coastal protection, and recreation. ORAI has the tools and expertise to help save marine habitats-but we must work fast. ORAI’s goal is to establish 1000 artificial reefs in key sites around the globe by 2030. Here’s how we’ll reach that goal:
Hands-on restoration - We’re restoring critical marine habitats and scaling up our work in more than 10 sites in 5 countries, engaging 5,000 volunteers to support marine biodiversity and build coastal resilience.
Developing key science and innovation - Our scientists are leading research to accelerate advances in reef restoration, such as guidance on where restoration delivers the greatest benefits and how to develop climate adaptive solutions.
Providing local leaders with tools, training and networks - We’re working with coastal communities through the Ocean Rescue Alliance International and Coral Rangers program to help scale up habitat restoration and protect their ocean habitats.
Scaling our work - We’re developing best practices in marine habitat restoration and deploying these through ORAI’s networks to reach partners working on sites in more than 100 sites around the globe.
ORAI’S 1000 MERMAIDS ARTIFICIAL REEF PROJECT!
ORAI is using art to elevate, educate and inspire audiences around the world about the importance of reefs and the benefits of marine restoration. These reefs are designed to incorporate art, innovative designs, and safe materials, while restoring reefs.
