24th December 1966: One of the quirks of sixties football were the Christmas double header matches. In this case Chelsea and Liverpool had to play each other home and away on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, neither particularly fan friendly fixtures. As Liverpool were the current reigning Champions and lying third in the Division One table it's a mystery why that had to wait five months before they debuted on Match of the Day this season while Chelsea had featured seven times already. Unfortunately for Chelsea their season was about to unravel as they were struggling to overcome the loss of Peter Osgood their manager Tommy Docherty gambled on bringing Aston Villa's prolific goalscorer Tony Hateley for £100,000 to the club. Hateley, who had also been wanted by Liverpool and Leeds, had only recently moved to Chelsea but found their passing game didn't play to his strength in the air forcing them to go more direct. Docherty jokingly described Hateley's passing ability as "marked to whom it may concern". Not so funny when Tommy was sacked at the end of the season.
