The lift pumps were garbage on the vp44. Most of the time barely made enough pressure and eventually took out the injection pump. That’s the reason everyone goes with a fass or air dog. The rule of thumb was a minimum of 10 psi of fuel while driving. That supplied the proper pressure and also was enough to pop open the return line spring so you could circulate fuel and keep the injection pump cool

I am a retired diesel mechanic of 40 years. When the vp44 fails it puts out 4 to 8 codes. Something many mechanic s don't know is you set the engine at tdc, but it doesn't have to be on the compression stroke. It has a laser inside and it will automatically time itself. Main reason for top dead center is so the key doesn't drop into the gear case. And also you cannot replace that key unless you set it up on a test stand and time it.

I believe the gear you pulled loose from the VP44 pump never comes fully disengaged from the cam gear. That's why it doesn't fall down into the timing case when you pull the pump out. So when you wife hit the starter it stayed clocked to the crank and didn't lose timing. I'm guessing you had to bar the engine over to bring the keyway back to 12 o'clock? Nice job BTW. Great video just a couple things the owner should have done, First he should of had you change the tappet cover gasket while pump was out, if it wasn't leaking, it will be soon, 2nd, the in the tank pumps or a FASS pump are 100% better. The engine vibration kills those side mounted pumps. I have a 2001 with only one Injection pump changed at 86K under warranty, failed lift pump was the cause, new lift pump was put into tank in 2005, and now truck has over 430K and still running strong on those same pumps. I do have a lift pump pressure gauge, so guess it's 3 things. LOL Keep up the great videos.
@morgansword
3 жыл бұрын
Those pumps look pretty intimidating to me. I remember all the hype on the 5.9 engine being better than pockets on shirts and on some certain days of the month you get the drift. Anyway that is a plug for any older mechanic such as myself to not want or find the need to buy a diesel if its going to cost six thousand dollars to get the parts and even if it takes in labor too, I would not give that kind of money to see it fail again. I happen to be aware that the wiring under the dash is enough to power small cities in my time. So just swapping the cabin to a rust free truck is a minor part of fixing one through replacement. Copart has thousands of those trucks... many look very nice and you think well, I can fix the engine or transmission, after all, its Chrysler we are talking here. And now the standard transmission has gone by the wayside for whatever reason. Starting to make a ford look a little better all the time. You get into a new ford and its like a millionaire's home opposed to the poor bastards how did you even drive it seventies any rig. My biggest complaint is the ten pounds of crap in the five pound bag. Either build a engine that leaves room under the hood for service or build a bigger truck. They do beed rolls in the fenderwells, then take a photo of it and for every little spot where the fender flares out is a part that makes this a vehicle that runs. All companies do it. I miss the ford 300 six or the leaning tower of power. With all the sensors on them, you would that they are filming Cleopatra. I just haven't made it to the twenty first century I guess. I bought the most bell whistle included fancy everything 95 ford f350 and I was so happy till I got older and couldn't climb that tower of horse manure bumper and other to even check the oil. I was mad and traded in while I was for a ford explorer the same year. My truck needed a new starter to roll the engine over fast enough to run. It really was that simple to just replace it but I'm 72, a cripple that can't walk and since stroke only left arm works. Yes this is hunt and peck. Even though I live in alaska, that truck looked like it lived in Dallas Texas. Not even a little blister bubble of rust on the cab corners and yes I am suffering traders remorse. Later Wes.. good video, nice to not see the two of you throw daggers at each other

We changed my vp44 years ago. I think you are righ the gear should not get out of mesh. We didn’t have it at TDC either. We used a mirror to line the pump shaft and key up. We did stick the key 8n with a small drop of super glue just so it wouldn’t get dropped going in. Supposedly these keys are offset as they are supposed to go in as they come on the pump. However I could not see any offset on either of my pumps. But do keep it oriented. We installed a new lift pump as you did that’s the correct way to do this. It seemed that if you bump the key it will start the lift pump for 30 seconds or so. I did install a pressure gage in the top of the lift pump. It’s supposed to run around 10 psi as I recall. There was an update on the standard lift pump as there were many failures early on it had a name but I’ve forgotten that. My replacement vp44 has well over 450k miles as does the lift pump. My duality has been the Mose effective cost per mile of all the vehicles I’ve ever had. Even with the costly diesel. The duality still gets 20+ mpg cruising with a 4.10 gear. I got ver close to 20 mpg pulling my gooseneck race car trailer at 10 k pounds many times. The shackles rusted out so I replaced them and the front sheet metal. And door skins. The quarter door locks rust too theme the door won’t open. That’s a real pain. Best to replace them before it happens. I had to cut an opening in the door jam to get at the bolts. Radiator will be next and ac compressor. Might not be a bad idea to either replace it now or have a crank position sensor in the glove box and tools to remove it and the starter. I’ve done it in the rain on road side. Not funn. It’s a no start thing with no warning. Just stops running or won’t start. There is a code but I can’t remember.

Like most electronic devices they will keep flashing an OLD firmware from 8 yrs ago, then make the user update.

Nice work Wes.. words were said, your still married (as far as we know) and the truck started just fine so it was another success. I get help from two helpers that sometime "help" more than they should, but hey you move on and get the job done.

Vp44 can only be elcipsed in unreliability by the Cat Heui pump. Both have serious short comings.

G'day and greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 good job Wes down here that truck would be taken off the road. Winter down here they use grit on the ice and black ice works well anyway it all worked out in the end. Stay safe kind regards John

Dude, I was in Ellijay Georgia recently. There were seriously 2nd Gen Rams down there driving around with non rusty bed sides, they still had cab corners and fenders. There were GMT400s running around same thing. I was in total awe down there; like WTF

My son has a 97 ram with zero rust. We live in southeastern Tennessee. Our dashes and upholstery get wrecked by the sun here in the south.

@@mullinsjm1 yeah I didn't get close enough to see the dashes. But yeah here in southern NJ they rot pretty bad and the dashes just disintegrate. But yeah I was all over from Rock City area of Tennessee over to Alabama. I decided that I need to move to that area simply for the lack of rust lol

Theres a special plug controller you plug straight to the module on top of vp44 and you supply power directly to idle truck

If he got 178k miles out of his VP44 he is lucky. Mine died at 43K mi. But my original batteries lasted from 1999 until 2014 in Vermont so the Mopar batteries are pretty good. The in-tank Dodge retrofit lift pump didn't put out enough pressure so I connected it back to the original pump on the side of the engine now I have a steady 15 psi.

bosch made really good stuff in the 80s and 90s, I inherited a jigsaw from my dad, it is from 1986, and still going strong to this day, just one question, do not wear work pants, or are jeans "work pants" ?

These trucks need a fuel pressure gauge so know when the lift pump dies. The gauge plus the sending unit is about $200 but it's much cheaper than having to replace the VP44.

The wind coming through the top of the door is common. Its from getting in and out of the truck and slamming the door. They just bend a bit and wind.

Just be careful about how you position yourself on that creeper. A buddy had 3 of his guys go down with hyper-extended knees from using those. He modified one so you put your lower body weight on your knees rather than standing and it seems to be working much better.
