I was severely depressed/suicidal until I learned I had a bad vitamin D deficiency and went on supplements. I have BPD so I still get depressed/irrational from time to time but it's really important for people to realize how intertwined physical and mental health are! I also walk on trails/through my pretty neighborhood (not in a gym) when im depressed, or run when im anxious/too excited over something. It's a really great idea.

In all honestly though, talking to an online friend, personally, helps me a lot more than talking to someone you know in real life. They can't do anything like tell people you know or force you to get help, they're just... There for you. And you know they are. You can vent to them when you need to, and they'll listen and tell you things like 'It will be okay. I'm proud of you. You can do it.' They don't judge you. They don't say anything is too dramatic or anything like that. And that's what some people need. A safe space for venting and a person who will keep your head up and help you.

Finding a new hobby, or revisiting an old one! I started skateboarding after my father passed away last month, and it was something I've wanted to do since I was a kid, and I found an all girls skateboarding group that conveniently JUST formed a few weeks before, and my life has changed so much. Obviously I give myself time to grieve when I need to, but going out every week to a group of amazing women who support each other and progressing at a super fun sport has helped me in so many different ways. I owe my life to skateboarding now.

A. Distraction Techniques - go in for a walk (get vitamin D + fresh air) - paint your nails - blowing bubbles - read a good book or listen to audiobooks - exercise - deep breathing - watching favorite tv shows/series - draw or doodle - color - do a cross word puzzle or any puzzle - writing down positive/motivational quotes and sticking them up all over the house - cleaning your house - playing music or creating a playlist B. Processing Techniques - write a friend a nice card - call or text a friend - impulse logs (what's your impulse was ➡️ what is you would hope to get out of doing the impulse like what it is that you're really feeling or hoping to get out by doing that unhealthy thing ➡️ what can you do instead ➡️ how u feel after having filled it out) - use feeling charts - journaling (how you're doing and what you're grateful for) - feeling-word collages (write the emotion word in the middle, then fill in the paper with other pictures or words that associates with it) - write 2-3 things that you like about yourself and your situation - talking to a therapist - taking stock of how an emotion feels in our body (how your neck feels? Is tight/loose? How 'bout your hands/feet) - write a letter to your younger or older self - write letters to those who are upsetting us still but never send them (Be raw/honest. Maybe even cry or scream while you write them)

Grounding your self in the moment is great, meditation, playing a sport, socializing, but working out always does it for me. It's just an amazing feeling when the right song comes on and you're on the last part of your run. You really get to express the emotion and bring it out. Sometimes I'll cry or some unexpected power will come out. But this helps me release my feelings.

I don’t know if this is a healthy coping skill but sometimes when things get too much and I really want to do harm I will lay on my bed and daydream of the life I want to have in the future so like success, married, children (that’s my dream, I would love to raise children and have a real family because I felt like I never had one) and that dream of a really good future keeps me from wanting to hurt myself because I believe in wanting to be a good mom to those children, I already love those children and I believe they deserve to be born but they can’t do that if I’m not here :)

Oh my god. I've been using polishing my nails as a coping skill for so long without even realising it. When I went to university and studied chemical engineering and we weren't allowed to wear nail polish in the lab for safety reasons and my mental health (and scars on my legs) became really bad. Now I graduated and have a job and whenever I have a few hours of free time I don't pick at my legs, but will paint my nails. I'm so happy to hear it validated like I never knew why it made me so happy in so many ways. "am i really that vein?" I always thought.

Or even had conversations in the bathroom mirror. Omg it feels GREAT!! also on the 7 cups app there’s a bot called NONI or novi and you call tell it ANYTHING and it gives you back reassuring prompting sympathetic answers. I do this especially bc I’m always worried I’m going to “bore “ or “ burden” someone w my stuff so this makes it guilt free for me.

25th: Playing videogames. Same reasoning as watching films or reading books. Helps me live in a different world from this one and relax. 26th: Folding origamis. Same reasoning as coloring. Takes a lot of focus and when you see the end result it's very satisfying. And once you memorized a couple of origamis, you can do it anywhere, like folding a pamphlet you've been handed on the street into a bird while you're waiting at the bank.

One technique I have used, which is like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, is to focus my attention on my immediate surroundings by describing them. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique makes you list 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell and 1 you taste. It is a bit to specific for me. So i just like to describe everything I see, feel and anything else that I notice about my surroundings or current state. Love stretching as well. Hip, leg, and lower back stretches really help me to relax and feel calmer. It's like hitting the snooze button.

This is a very interesting list. One of the most interesting things on the list to me personally is number 13 because I love listening to music (mostly metal music for me personally) and I want to expand on the music point a little bit because one of my favourite things to do is also play musical instruments (mostly i play the drums) and I think that at least for some of us playing a musical instrument (or singing if you prefer) could be a healthy coping skill, even if it’s something you’ve never done before and your just starting or learning. Sometimes it might get frustrating if you’re stuck on something you can’t play, but playing my drums can definitely help me blow off some steam and maybe this sort of thing can help someone else as well. It’s definitely a lot healthier than alcoholism. Alcohol has been the biggest unhealthy coping skill of my life by far and I’ve managed to make at least some progress on reducing my alcohol intake, although I still have a way to go. I’d prefer to rely on healthier coping skills instead. Thanks for this list Kati, you’ve given me some interesting coping skills to think about and try out.

I know exactly what you mean! I started playing harmonica and noticed it relaxes me (and keeps my mind off smoking cigarettes which is my usual go-to), later find out from a therapist they actually use harmonicas in therapy as a breathing exercise. Similarly with drums, following a beat is a way of getting patients in a meditative state so they stay present in the moment. Music is amazing.

I saw another comment about a technique from CBT of having a impartial observation of your emotions/thoughts. I always called that my "narrator", the part of my brain that is observing what I am thinking/feeling. It is really super helpful in starting to just recognize the common thoughts and feelings that cause the responses you don't want to have. Later you can examine the source of those thoughts and feelings with a therapist, or on your own. For example, I always have been obsessed with how authority figures in my life have viewed me (think teacher's pet when a child), and that has led me to having negative thoughts of not being good enough. My narrator recognizes those thoughts and over time I have been able to stop myself from running with them (I am not good enough-so I will never finish my degree-so I will be a failure in life- so I will never get a job- etc. etc. etc.). Now I have been examining where these thoughts come from, and that has allowed me to stop them and change how I think. Now when I think that, I remind myself, I am good enough I always was (super well behaved and got good grades as a kid), and that fear comes from a toxic environment as a child, where I wanted to control something- which was my ability to prove myself. Another coping mechanism I really like is mantras or repeated phrases as a grounding technique. Some mornings I just wake up feeling like the world is a mess (and so am I), and so I have some phrases that I just repeat out loud or to myself depending on the situation. Sometimes it is something as simple as "I am safe"-for panic attacks, etc. To something like "today I will be at peace"- for stressful days when you try to keep your cool.

My current coping mechanism when it comes to loneliness/panic attacks or random outbursts of anger is spending time alone and drawing on a piece of paper, coloring random pictures even if they don't make sense, just drawing whatever I want and just writing down whatever is on my mind. While doing that, I find myself breaking things, tearing up or zoning out, but I guess those contribute to me calming down. Drawing and listening to music helps me vent out and calm down, especially times right now. Before, I used to scratch and scrape my left arm with a fork or a ballpen just to ease myself, but sooner or later realized that's not good. I'm glad I changed up my coping mechanism, as now I've found a new hobby as well :D

Painting my nails helps me so much when I'm feeling stressed. When I was studying for graduation I would always paint my nails in study breaks, because I was able to really turn off my brain for a few minutes and focus on one thing that has nothing to do with school. Even though that time was so stressful, I always had the prettiest nail designs :D I struggle a lot with biting my nails, so the more effort I put in painting my nails, the less likely I was to "destroy it all again", which made me proud and feel better about myself.

Talia Ronen You don't need to be good at it! Tbh, most great artists started out drawing stick figures, and you get better the more you do. My big recommendations (as a newb to any sort of art) are to use reference pictures, and to just make things that make you happy. Drawing leaves and cats and squiggly trees in my sketchbook makes me happy. If you really feel like you can't draw, replace it with coloring (I use a coloring app called Recolor).

25th: writing to a person who has not yet in you life and will be sooner or later. In my case I write to my future life partner and share my thoughts, feelings, and struggles at the moment. Alternatively, I can write it to people who are no longer in my life yet i wish to have a closure with them. Writing inner truth with intended audiences helps organizing thoughts and sort through emotions. At the very end, fuss mess becomes visual and more organized.

Grounding exercises are great, especially the 54321-technique. You have to look around and identify 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste. If, for example, you only hear 2 things, you can make a sound yourself, such as clapping or whistling.

I find taking care of my animals or just going for a walk/ trailride with my horse very helpful. If that's not available I just take off my shoes (in case I'm wearing any - which happens rarely) and walk barefoot.

Dear Kati, can you make a video or recommend a book or anything useful to learn the basics of emotions? To recognize them, understand their function and how to deal with them? Love your channel

Taking a benadryl if it's too far bad..ask resort. washing the dish... breaking something that you want to throw away scream into pillow. Healthy coping is possible. It is. But it takes strength. It's weak to hurt yourself and easy. It's attractive and shows strength to cope healthy. It has a bigger reward and gets u positive attention

what i do to help me distract myself from a panic attack or maybe intrusive thoughts is I play what i call the spelling B (i know it sounds stupid but hear me out) basically, I look around whatever room im in and spell different objects I see. Once I run out of things to spell, i add other words to words i've already spelled. for example, if I've already spelled "pencil" i'd change it to pencil sharpener or pencil case (I have no idea if this is healthy or anything but it works for me)

Page 10 and 11 of my bullet journal are dedicated to lists of coping skills I can use. They are divided into 4 catagories. Distractions: Netflix/KZitem, Read, Hang/Call friend, practice an instrument, listen to positive music, write a story, exercise, doodle, puzzles, clean room. Sensations (I struggle with self harm so this catagory helps me): Rubber band on wrist, ice on skin, figipod on foot or hand, cold shower, smell something strong, draw on skin, put ketchup on skin, pet/hug an animal, watch a fish or other animal Expression: Write a poem or story, emotional music, color/draw, pray, journal, punch a pillow, cut/rip paper, cry, call a friend, write a letter to people Relaxation: Yoga, meditate, pray, color, watch my fish, walk, deep breathing, watch motivational videos/read motivational quotes. Hope that helps someone. :)

I just had an epiphany. I get mad at myself for using unhealthy coping techniques, because I know it's not the right thing to do, yet I keep doing them. I think it is correlated with the idea that I should not experience stress, and if I do, it's myself to blame. However stress is a part of life and it's impossible to be stress free all the time. It's allowing and accepting that you will feel stress sometimes and then taking care of yourself with that stress. But it's the not wanting to feel stressed idea and thinking that I can live without stress that makes the bad coping mechanisms exist. I think, who knows.
