A trick for using a quick wash cycle on the washer is that you can let the water come in, agitate a bit, and then stop the washer and let the clothing soak. After however long, finish up the cycle. I started doing this and found that things got cleaner!

Buy a fujidenzo washing machine. It’s a whirlpool sister company. They have what they call “eco soak”. It agitates your clothes just a total of 15-20 minutes overall and soaks the clothes in between. In the Philippines, it costs me about $5 a month to run.

yes, all my African friends do this for bright whites and you rarely see stains on their clothes. In Walmart, there is a bar soap in the hispanic laundry section called Zote. It is an amazing full-fat soap vs. detergent. It treats stains, pulls out antiperspirant and collar oils in dress clothes. Dampen, treat, and soak overnight. Then finish the wash the next day.

Kathleen is right --- the amount of laundry detergent and fabric softener recommended is actually bad for your clothes because they leave a residue in the clothes. I have a few suggestions. (1)Washing soda is an old-time laundry booster my grandmother used every time, and I do the same; not only does it get your clothes cleaner, it also strips out the residue that detergents and fabric softners leave. (2)When I shop online, unless I truly need an item right away, I put the items in the "save for later" section and leave them for a while. Then I go back and often end up deleting most of it. (3) Build a capsule wardrobe; a few items that can be mixed and matched will give you many outfits. (4) Have desserts only occasionally, and not at every meal.

My first husband refused to drink powdered milk which was cheaper to buy some odd fifty years ago than milk.(Don't know if that is true now) Well, he said this in front of his mother one day while we were visiting and after he left the room she started laughing and said he has been drinking powdered milk for years because that is all she could afford when he was growing up! Later I told him what she said, he had no response. The next time I served him a glass of milk he accused me of making powdered milk to fool him because he could tell the difference. Well, another good laugh- it was whole milk I served him!! The jackass didn't know the difference- (PS) he became my ex-husband because he was a jackass in so many more ways than 1!!!

I love your channel. Here are the things I do that I am not sure I have sen on your channel yet: I bought a washing machine that only uses cold water. If I want to wash with hot water I have to add it in myself. I dry the clothes on a rack. Don’t miss a dryer I handwash the dishes, wait till I have enough. I always see people in the US wash dishes under running water, I fill a small tub and can do a lot of dishes with it until it gets dirty. This is normal in the NL I have a grocery list on my phone. I can uncheck the box if I need anything I am seperated, I have the kids one week on and off. In the off week I ask them what they want to eat the next week. They can each pick two meals. One of the meals must be healthy. This way I cook things they like and plan the rest around it. I always use up everything in my fridge, I get groceries once every two weeks. It makes you very creative towards the end 😉 Turn off the heat and lights in rooms I am not in I bike everywhere. Only use the car if I am the mommy cab or if it is further than 10km. It is my free gym I shop on Wish to feed the shopping crave. Lots of weird thing are in there. I never pay though, I end up removing everything after a while If I see something I like in a store I wonder where it will go once I bring it home. And then I usually don’t want it I wear extra clothes before turning on the heat If I want new clothes I do the same. When will I wear it? Do I love it more than anything else I already have? Usually not The outdoors is my gym. I rather invest in a good bike, skates, hiking and running shoes that I use for years than a gym membership where I feel miserable anyway because I am moving but not going anywhere I bought a 2nd hand table and used it to build a wall in my home and made side tables with the left over material, as well as supports for a desk and my microwave. It was fun, just like my “empty the fridge before you buy new” project, to see how far I could stretch the material. I ask for pallets (they are always given away for free at places) and cut and chop them up. I then have fires outside with friends and we have great evenings together cooking over the fire. They give me something for free 3 times: the chopping exercise, the fire and sitting around it with a friend and cooking dinner over it. When the kids were small we bought clothes and toys on flea markets. Still going with all the trends, but finding it for a much better price. Putting things (toys) away for birthdays and holidays. I am frugal for no reason. I hate wasting money and fill the planet with more trash. So that is my reason for checking out these tips I guess. Anyway, thanks for the content, I love to see how fast your channel is growing

I just started following your channel because I'm in THAT PLACE in my finances :) I remember as a child in the 70s and early 80s that we used those glossy calendars as book and notebook covers. They were always so colorful, mostly garden and interior scenes. And it wasn't because we couldn't afford plastic covers---we just liked doing this because it made our books and notebooks distinctive from my other classmates ;) As the youngest of 7, I always got the books of my older siblings and they were always in good condition because those covers were so resilient.

If you make your own bread (which is easy to do) save your water from cooking pasta or potatoes and use that for the water for your bread. It cuts down on the amount of sugar the yeast needs AND gives you a texture more like what you would find in store bought bread. Additionally, when it comes to bread, if you are short on flour but need to make bread and you have oatmeal (old fashioned or quick doesn't matter) throw it in the blender and pulverize it to make oat flour. Sift or don't but use it *before* you use your bread or all purpose flour since it absorbs a bit more water than the white flour. Fruits and vegetables that are starting to wilt can still be used... fruits can be turned into fruit breads or muffins (you can add yogurt that is a day or so past the "use by" date as well), pancakes or can be turned into pancake syrup. Vegetables that are starting to wilt can be tossed into a soup pot to make vegetable broth or to make vegetable soup. Wilted celery will come back if you soak it in a bit of ice cold water for a bit and if you put a piece of damp paper towel around the end and wrap it in aluminum foil it will keep for a while without wilting.

We ordered a bidet on Amazon for less than $40. My husband installed it. We also purchased reusable cloth baby wipes. And a bag that holds cloth diapers that are soiled for diaper bags. We hung the bag in the bathroom and we use the bidet and we just use the wipes to dry off and then we put them in that diaper bag. Every couple of days I just throw it in with a load of towels or jeans and we hardly are using toilet paper. Obviously we keep it on hand so if someone happens to stop by their welcome to use it but we're trying to reduce our waste and we're trying to purchase as many reusable items as possible. We also purchase stainless steel coffee filters. Not only is it better than using the paper filters which actually contain plastic, the coffee tastes so much better! We've made a goal that every time my husband get paid we tried to purchase one item that is reusable. It's definitely not been a fast process but we're really starting to see a huge drop in our Walmart bill. We also bought foaming soap pumps and they fit on mason jars we dilute dr. Bronner's Soap and we use this for hand soap and I also use it to scrub my face with.

We do this regularly in my country. Most middle-class households don't own a coffee maker. We just add boiling water over sugar and coffee grounds that are previously added to each cup, stir, and let it sit until it cools enough to drink. By that time, usually all the coffee grounds have settled to the bottom and apart from the last few sips, there are no coffee grounds in the coffee, although that's how you do it when each person takes their coffee differently-I guess you could do it all in the kettle and strain it otherwise. It's so interesting to see these cultural differences-for example most people here don't use a clothes dryer either, they air-dry.

I bought a notebook at the dollar store and in it I keep all my secrets. I wrote a copy out and gave it as a Christmas gift to a person who envied me for all my great frugal recipes. I make my own laundry detergent (I keep it in a tub in the basement) I make my own dishwashing liquid. They have the same basic things in them so if I do spill something I can use the dishwashing liquid as a pretreater. I still buy blue dawn for some things. I took old cotton PJ's and cut them up into rags and I use them as reusable lysol wipes. I put ones to be used in one container and after they went through the wash I have the other in a container. I don't buy glass cleaner. I use 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water. I have so many recipes in that book and I got them all from Pinterest. That's why it made a great gift because they didn't have to do the time of finding them and they knew the things I made worked. I too use the funnies for wrapping paper or I reuse the bags people give me.

This might sound crazy but I found it to very helpful to avoid going into stores when I’m bored just to pick up “ a few things”. Leave your wallet at home. Obviously bring your ID, but leave all your cash and cards at home when you leave for work. As long as you make sure you have your coffee, lunch, snacks, water bottle and your car is gassed up, you will have everything you need for the day and won’t even be able to buy anything since you won’t have your money on hand. Try it for a week and see how much you don’t miss spending money. That’s my favorite habit.

We save sooooo much money on our daily coffee. We grind whole beans then make the coffee in a percolator (no filter-it isn’t really necessary) just like grandma use to use. After the initial purchase of the grinder and the percolator, we spend about $6 for more than 2 weeks of coffee. The coffee is delicious! We do have a Keurig to use when entertaining but rarely use it. Our guest usually prefer freshly ground coffee.

When you grind your coffee, grind it to the Turkish setting, this allows you to use half the amount of coffee to brew that batch. Next tip is more controversial, after you brew, save the coffee in original filter. Save in refrigerator. Next time you brew coffee, add 1/2 the usual amount to the saved amount and brew. Same taste and quality. This tip originates from a contributor to “The Tightwad Gazette”. Big savings on coffee. My ex wanted an expensive brand of whole beans, this brought the price down to a manageable cost.

I am paid once a month so I have a standard list of households staples that I check each month on payday, such as toilet paper, laundry soap, oatmeal, flour, etc. I walk around my house double checking my supplies on hand to see if I should restock any items. I have two of most items (cheaper in bulk) and when I have finished using the first item and begin to use the second one, I will mark it on my list or catch it when I review my monthly household checklist. When COVID first started here in the US, I decided to do my grocery shopping one day a week to limit my time in public. I like it so much that I will continue shopping once a week even after we get ahead of COVID. I also go first thing in the morning (every Saturday) when the store opens to avoid the crowds. I always shop with a list and allow myself only 1-2 additions if I see something I forgot to list (it happens 😚) or find a really good sale. This month I am focused on pantry/shelf shopping so I have written out a month of menu planning and will follow up on Sunday with meal prepping as much as I can to use up any item that is getting close to its expiration date.

We didn't have anything extra growing up especially food and snacks! I came from a third world country and food was and still is expensive. Cakes Ice cream and chips and soda were a luxury to us. I was in absolute shock when I came to the states and witness how people just waste so much food. So please dear friends don't waste your money buying so much food. Choose foods that are healthy and avoid too much snacking on junk foods.

#23 - Don't use electricity one day per week. Initially, this sounds hard. But, I live in Texas and a couple of weeks ago, we (and so many others) were without elec. for FOUR DAYS (some were longer than that). The pandemic has taught me what I really can do without. 👍👍

My family owned a dry cleaning and laundry and I learned that too much laundry detergent actually attracts dirt, even in the wash. If there’s too much detergent to rinse out properly it stays in the fibres and the dirt will stick to the detergent. I use very little detergent and my clothes get very clean.

I got an energy saving tip... Put power strips on electrical items that are used intermittently. Most appliances use a significant amount of electricity even when they are shut off. Example. The microwave uses about 25Watts when it is off. Putting a power strip on it will eliminate this 24/365. Problem is the power strip costs approx. $15, so the break even time would be about 12 years. NEVERMIND. (It might be a good idea if you have a spare power strip just laying around)

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but we like to roast whole chickens on a regular basis. In addition to making multiple meals from it throughout the week (soups, salads, casseroles, etc.), we also save up the carcasses in the freezer and use them to make our own crockpot chicken broth (to which we add some veggie scraps and some cheap parts like backs, necks, or feet for extra oomph). We freeze the broth in 2 cup portions, which is roughly the size of a can of broth. We do a similar thing with beef bones, but we eat less of them so it takes longer to have enough for a good batch. To that we also add veggie scraps and some "soup bones."
@chickadeetle
3 жыл бұрын
I do the same then run the chicken bones through the instapot several times. When at the point of disintegration, I puree the bones, skin, cartilage, etc, then put through a sieve (to make sure absolutely no bone pieces are left. I add a little cooked rice for binding, spread out on large sheet pan and bake on low oven until dried out. My dogs know these as "Chicken Brownies" and love them so much they shake with excitement when getting a piece. Absolutely no waste on chicken!

I had to smile about your light bulb moment regarding square and rectangular food containers being more space efficient in the fridge...or anywhere really. I love vintage kitchen ware and over time I collected several glass refrigerator dishes. They are all square or rectangle, and have flat lids, so they are also stackable. If I'm not mistaken, some refrigerators even came with a set of those glass containers for leftovers. They date back to at least the 1940's

Use a file clip(?) proper name eludes me right now), on your toothpaste tube as you use it. I keep folding over the end and clamp that sucker on! Been doing it for years and I have probably gotten 10-12 more uses then if I didn’t! P.S. The tech guy who came to fix my washer last year gave me super tips..similar to ones in this video. Most machines are designed for smaller amounts of detergent, I now use 1/4 of recommendation and he suggested I use speed wash! (Unless of course it’s heavily soiled)

If you use only quick cycle on your washing machine, make sure you run longer cycle with higher temperature every now and then. It prevents detergent build up and cleanses your washing machine. Edit: someone had a tip about using newspapers as wrapping paper. You can use the cartoon pages for a child's gift. I have used cartoons also for my adult relative who has a good sense of humour.

My grandpa always said buy cheap and you will buy at least twice. Nowadays it's more like buy quality over quantity. It alwasy worked out to be this way for me. Also if you love the expensive showergel buy it! But (re) fill a dispenser with it and put a push on a wet sponge to wash and it will go along way (works for the cheap one too ;) ) and/or use it not every day. This is just an example it runns down to buy what you love abd find a way to stretch it.

Back when grandpa said that he quality was there and simply made so easy to repair. My dad repaired our toaster for thirty years. After thirty years my mom decided she wanted a 4 slice toaster. They kept the 2 slice in case of company or repair needed to the 4 slice toaster. The farberware pots and pans were still in pristine condition after 60 years of marriage.

1. You can only make leave in conditioner from conditioner IF the original conditioner does not have glycerin or other forms of it. Otherwise it can mess with your hair, making it tacky/sticky or causing more dry ends because you've literally left soap on it. A great detangler (I have 3B and my son has 3C curls, super porous and always tangled...) Is Cantu's Super Shine Hair Silk. I got a 6 oz bottle for less than 3 dollars at a dollar store. Family Dollar carries a lot if ethnic products, which work on finer, straight hair if you use it sparingly and have wet hair already. We use it every other day for 3 people and it's half full over 4 months later. You can also just use olive oil, sunflower oil, or avocado oil from the kitchen isle. Coconut oil so severely over hyped. Also Suave hair silk, or shiny serums are good for coarse hair, and I got a bottle at the dollar store for 1.25. it also lasted us several months. They're both basically just oil and mineral oil, so this could be made at home cheaper, as well! 2. You're only legally allowed to buy, then sell a certain number of cars per year without getting a dealers license. In Oklahoma that number is 7, and many of those cars were abandoned at mechanics, where the customer refused to come get it or pay for the repairs it needs. While it is handy to do, it's extremely risky. I've gotten many cars from auctions, and several of them were not driveable in a month, and we could not sell them. It's a great way to spend under 2k on a car, if you know how to inspect cars.

We sold our home in a "hot market" area of the country and bought a much smaller home in a tiny town. We now live on less than our former house payment (and now have an affordable 15 year mortgage). Will hopefully be paying that off within 5 years. Smaller house, smaller bills, less to take care of. It needs to be remodeled, but hubby can do the work and I am in to repurposing as much as possible. Much less stress in a smaller town as well.

I heard this great frugal saying on another channel, use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without! A couple of my own frugal tips are to water down washing up liquid (if you don't have a dishwasher and wash by hand) to make it go further and get every last bit out and also to use any shampoo you don't use anymore to clean the toilet and any perfume you don't use any more as air freshener.
