Excellent Vid Chris! Happy to say I haven't made any of those mistakes. Additional tips: 1. Divers Alert Network insurance for diving accidents. It's cheap and the benefits exceed almost any other medical insurance. Such as transport to a barometric chamber. 2. Try a dry run lugging your backpack or luggage around your home town for a day. Take it on transit. And then try living out of it solely for a couple days. After reevaluate if you didn't use or need something, or forgot a necessary item. This test run also helps you decide if you have the right bag. Does it fit right, have you balanced the weight. Does the waist belt fit your hips correctly. Are you using a suitcase when you should be using a backpack, or vice versa. JasonT

Loved the list. I would like to suggest one tip that saved my life while travelling. Leave one spare credicard in your luggage. Once when I arrived in mexico. someone robbed my wallet from my bag with all my credit card and cache. I called the bank and they said it would take them 10 days send me credicard or cache to a foreign country. Thank god I had hidden a cc in my luggage that saved my vacation and a lot of stress. I didn't have cache to take the cab to the hotel ....

Gosh Overpacking: when I was 17-19 a whole bag for 2-3 days! Lately being overly distrustful, or better said taking too long (almost two weeks) until I start to relax and enjoy the trip. I would add one thing about bringing essentials: research your destination about the requirements to buy medicine, that's the one thing I would overpack on.
@grrrltraveler
3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, with personal medicine its best to be safe than sorry. Although the U.S. is a lot more restrictive and expensive than many countries. The overly distrustful can be travel jadedness. It happens you've just experienced a lot of the realities of travel. I've found traveling to a different region where things are done very differently can help.

When I first solo traveled, I did overpack. I am a 6 foot tall / plus size woman and I have learned how to pack for 2-3 weeks in a carry-on. I just make sure I know ahead of time where I can do my laundry & where I can purchase basic essentials. Woolite dry cleaning sheets are my best friend! I learned the lesson of travel insurance years ago when a friend of mine had to medevac to the United States and the bill was $100,000. I always make sure my travel insurance covers medevac.

1st I am a new follower and I want to say you are a beautiful, intelligent, articulate woman. I look forward to following your travels. In my service in the USAF I was privy to see 18 countries over the years. I learned how to travel with travel toothpaste, deodorant, and a change of clothes. Oh, the agony when I first went to Vietnam with 4 bags through 2 international airports. Never again. LOL I like to call much of what you mentioned "situational awareness" Personally I like to arrive at 3 AM in the morning in big major international cities. But not so much when I fly into a small province in the Philippines. After I left the airforce from injury I went through a divorce and got full custody of my daughter. I raised her alone for the last 10 years and now she is off to college. My parents are still alive and have been a great support to us through the years. I would like to start traveling again next year and start a travel vlog. I have a degree in cinematography and about to finish my master's in creative writing. I know at times it is lonely but I am a minimalist at heart and enjoy the peace of travel. I was actually going to mention not booking a hotel for a week or a month. I got burned on that one bad in China. I usually book the first 2 nights and then decide what to do from there. I don't want to advertise but I will say there are sites like hotels that are foreign-run and you get cheaper prices. Research research research for every trip. I have spent the night at a five-star hotel for $150 a night and was not really that satisfied. Then again with proper research, I have found some 3 and 4 start hotels for $30 that were great. Best of luck in your travels. Who knows one day we may cross paths. Oh and there is one bank card in America that you pay no ATM fees foreign or domestic for. If you are charged foreign fees they reimburse you. Look it up it does exist.

The easily trusting one! I haven't traveled solo before but one time I got on a trip with a guide who was less experienced than I was, and we ended up overpaying a cab who went on different streets just to rack up the meter (I was keeping track on the phone, but didn't want to say anything bc I thought I was being polite). But the cab was a comfier car than the others. Wish we didn't get fooled like that though. Love watching your travel videos (it is so hard to find Asian solo girl travelers, bc the white people always have more vlogs but like. I know I'm going to get treated differently in a different country bc I look different than them lmao) Hope you and your stay safe and happy! 💕 God bless and great travels from the Philippines

Not saying anything because you want to be polite I'm totally guilty of too. It's upbringing and sometimes, it's being Asian. Thankfully these days UBER and rideshare services are getting more popular in Asian countries, pushing fraudulent taxis out of the way. But the last couple of times i jumped into a taxi, i turned on Google Maps voice loud so they knew it was on and tracking them. That way, I don't have to say anything. ;)

If I end up buying too many souvenirs on vacation and they won't fit in my luggage. What I do is on the last day of my trip I'll go to the post office and mail home a lot of my clothes and take all my souvenirs wrapped in my clothes in the luggage with me. It cost me an extra couple of dollars to mail some of my clothes home but at least my souvenirs stay safe with me. depending on the cost of sending my clothes home I may just leave them at a shelter and my new ones when I come home.

Wow that's really cool, a wrist wallet, I've never seen one or thought of it before. A mistake I made was not studying the lines in Manhattan and was nervous about using them so I walked. I found them very daunting, what got me over it was a friend I made there showed me the lines, which ones go where, which ones were express verses local" lines meaning stopping at every stop possible. Next mistake, not understanding what the weather was like there verses Vancouver CA, December. I wore a big Northface parka, I was sweating all the time and took up so much space. Eventually sized down to a more suitable jacket. I was able to keep grasp of my street smarts which I'm sure I avoided some unnecessary situations. NEXT mistake, I didn't get mobile coverage for my phone, I decided to be cheap and not do it (4 years ago, wasn't really automatic?) and ugh, was annoying. Next one was make sure the hotel has WiFi, i Hd to pay daily for it... 29$ DAY. oOoOpS. Thank you for making this video, a lot of this hits on my Journey's to NYC, Chicago many times the last 4 years.

I’m planning my first solo trip abroad in the coming year and am certainly feeling nerves, but I’m also thrilled to get to explore new places on my own. I’ve loved watching and learning from your videos, Christine. This one is especially helpful! Question for anybody that has some advice to offer - Has only booking a hotel for the first night in a location worked out alright for you? I do like the idea of not being locked into a bad hotel for the duration of my stay, but am nervous about not being able to continue my accommodation stay if I like the place and they’re fully booked. Or even not being able to find other accommodation on short notice. TIA

Only took one trip in my life back in 1986 when I traveled from Honolulu to Sacramento, CA to visit my Aunt and cousins. I flew into San Francisco where my Aunt and cousin met me. Driving out of SFO I couldn't believe what I saw, BILLBOARDS, all along the highway. I was shocked and dismayed at the sight. I was born and raised in Hawaii where there is no billboards. Other than that it was a fantastic trip. Saw snow and trains for the first time.

I've never traveled solo overseas and rarely domestically, but we are still guilty of some of these.. Forgetting stuff - chargers, meds, equipment. Forgetting to notify the bank. Forgetting to check in with family (although that was pre-online communication). Twice I've had near breakdowns in airports because I didn't know how we were getting to our hotel. I hate that.

Thought I've made a few mistakes but the only one I did was the 1st one (Overpacking). My tip is to do research on the places you plan to visit and to screenshot and/or take photos any logistic things in case you don't have any internet connection to access them. Its always good to know when is the peak traffic hour so you can reach the airport on time and its also good to reach the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. And its also helpful to know the basic language in case you need to find the toilet :)

As far as rookie tips, I proved last year you can make rookie mistakes after traveling for years, haha. I combined two of those into one bad time in Cebu with the overdrinking and staying in a hostel chain I will NEVER stay in again! If I were to have kept track, I probably have made at least five of your rookie mistakes over the years, lol. Oh well, only the two last year really got me into trouble, with that badly broken finger and the really terrible case of Dengue due to all that alcohol, I'm sure.
