Calib.... While I don't believe you've ever reviewed any type of anamorphic lens or equipment - I've discovered that this Ikan VL35 can correct for anamorphic squeeze, so that one can see a de-squeezed image on the monitor. The de-squeezed monitor image, complete with top/bottom bars and "normal perspectives" can be seen when shooting with an anamorphic adapter (such as SLR Magic's 1.33 lens system) on an appropriate primary lens. With this SLR Magic lens system, one would selects 2.35:1 for the aspect ratio in the monitor's menu. 2:1 de-squeeze is also available if using different "squeeze factor" anamorphic lens. I agree, this is a great small monitor - the newly discovered de-squeeze for anamorphic recording is just more icing on the cake !

I just ordered my a6300 and I am considering the newly released DH5e, the touch screen pinch zoom seems like a real winner for $399. Assuming the pinch zoom lets you zoom in on any section of the image.

Hi Caleb....I share your A++ rating on the iKan VL35. But, using it out--of-doors in bright sunlight cancels a lot of the ++s. A sun shade visor is definitely needed, but nothing is available from iKan. However, exploring the range of monitor sun shades on Amazon, I came across the Xcellent Global 4.7" foldable sun hood. At $ 7.00, why not see what a sun hood "hack" might provide for the iKan VL 35 ? Removing the rubber attachment loops and replacing them with a Velcro strip on the interior of the shade, matched with other Velcro strips attached to the sides of the iKan VL 35 - the monitor screen was now shaded by my $ 7.00 investment. The only downside is that the buttons on the top of the IKan VL35 are not accessible without removing the shade (a minor problem). The resulting "hack" looks like I purchased the shade from iKan !

This monitor is very cool by the quality and size! The question is: Why use such a monitor when the camera's rear monitor is also there to use and has the same screen size as it looks? The camera we see in the video also has an EVF that is even better to focus and use in daylight! The use of this magnificent ICAN has an effective use when a director or producer wants to monitor the image of the camera as it happens in certain productions!

Still haven't decided, will likely be something for next month. Ikan would be the preferred option if it was bigger. it has the nice loupe function but its still only of about the same size as the screen on the a6300. The apurture has the advantage of giving you a better view but it also makes the setup larger.

Why are most camera monitors still so expensive in comparison to other tech? I mean you can get smartphones for under a 100$ with an HD screen. I'm considering a monitor for a while now but I just can't wrap my head around these prices. The only one that seems kinda worth it right now is the Aputure VS1 FineHD nce it's at least a Full HD screen.

Hey, very cool monitor you have there. I have a few questions from watching your video: - Does the frame rate drop when you have false color turned on? It looked like it was very jerky, but that might just be from adjusting the exposure in steps. - Does the monitor double as a composite-to-HDMI converter if you're using the composite input, or is the HDMI output only active when you are using the HDMI input? - How is the brightness outdoors?

Thank you, Caleb! I'm highly considering purchase. My main need is to have a reliable headphone jack that will allow audio monitoring on the Sony A6300. Does the iKan support this without turning off the Sony screen? Can I also use a cheaper HD monitor for the sole purpose of audio monitoring on the A6300?

Yes, this is one of the best/cheapest options for getting a great monitor and headphone jack for the a6300. Unfortunately there is no way to control when or how the a6300 screen turns off/goes black when using an HDMI device (in 4K mode). But I think you'll mainly be looking at the monitor as it is very nice.

Hey Cabel! Thanks for doing this review. I am looking to buy a complete new setup, the BMMCC and a brand new monitor, this one, or the DH5e. Living outside the US complicates things such as not being able to test the products first. I know everyone says the screens are very sharp, but i'm more interested in the fidelity of color and overall quality of the panel. What is your opinion to let's say a DP4 or a BM VA?
