I had a 1977 6.9 in "pastelgrau" (jpastel grey) that was given to me. Like they say there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes. I put in over $55k in the short time I owned it in the late '90s. I made it as close to showroom as I could. I liked the car. I've had Mercedes before and after it. I didn't find it supremely special and my favorite Mercedes has been a 1998 SL500 that I still own. Back to my 6.9. It had impeccable manners and lots of power. It didn't fly off from stoplights rather had plenty of power in reserve. The interior was nearly identical to my past 1980 300SD except the 300SD had Zebrano wood and the 6.9 had walnut. There was also a lever for the hydropneumatic suspension otherwise they were the same cockpit. People often mention their opinion on the 6.9 bumpers. I am in the "Like" column. They were enormous F-You bumpers and I was hit at a good clip from behind on Sunset Blvd in Beverly Hills and the Taurus that hit me was a mess and my 6.9 appeared unscathed. My 6.9 captured a lot of attention from enthusiasts and was rather like walking a puppy, you'd better be prepared to have a conversation about it at any moment. I once came out of the gym and had someone laying underneath it checking it out. It seemed sketchy at first but talking to the guy he was just a bit overzealous in his interest in the car, no harm occurred. I sold the 6.9 after about 4 years. I have never regretted it with the exception that the gent I sold it to totaled it within weeks of owning it and had declared value insurance on it and walked away with a nice wad of dough. iwas jealous of that! LOL.

I am looking for another now in 2021 - some 40+ years since my original one was made - assuming I can find a good one - I plan on replacing the 2.65 gears this time for a lower ratio. *Indeed, the lad is right:* this model did not provide an outrageous presence on the road. For more opulent looks, Daimler-Benz had the 600 model at the time (up until 1981, after which they had no competition to Rolls-Royce and Bentley for the next twenty-something years). To be fair, many celebrities and dictators had this 6.9 model but sometimes they had it in Pullman versions. There were two: one had about a half meter elongation and another had one and a half meters added. Also, those variants were armoured for safety. After the discontinuation of the 600 model, those pullmans were the only choice for celebrities and dictators if they liked Mercedes-branded elite luxury cars, though they were already based on W126 platform rather than W116.

@@HighMileageReviews Not at all being biased - but the Australian-built 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO III sedan was a 142.0 mph vehicle and they ran (if my memory is correct) 3.5 gears. My 6.9 ran 2.65 gears (autobahn cruising gears) - put 3.5 gears in the 6.9 - and its top end speed would have taken somewhat of a 'dive' - HA - but DAMN - how much better would the acceleration then be in the 6.9 with its big torque numbers. HA - put 2.65 gears in the HO and the ope end speed would have been 'crazy' - albeit accompanied with a reduction in acceleration compared to the original 3.5 gears. And so as the story ends - people will argue about which was the fastest and which facts will prove the HO as - BUT - it was looooooooooong goooooooone after 1971 and hence therefore technically - the 6.9 was indeed in a league of its own in regard top speed when it was released. I am looking to find another 6.9 (I had one 40+ years ago and which I still had my original one) - assuming I can find a good one - this time I will be swapping out those 2.65 gears for something a bit lower ratio.

And the Euro bumpers are more than adequate. While sitting at a red light, myW116 (a humble 280 SE) was rear-ended by a Hyundai Getz (I know, I know, not a great match!) doing about 60 km/h (approx 37 mph). The Getz was being 'driven' by a silly bint who was using her phone (death penalty called for!) rather than watching the traffic. The Getz flipped, rolled, and ejected the brainless driver. It was a complete write-off. Damage to the Benz? The righthand corner of the rear bumper was pushed a few millimetres closer to the sheet metal and the tail-lamp lens was (almost imperceptibly) cracked. Had I bothered with repairs, the bill would have been in the region of $6K, so I billed the bint for that amount and pocketed the change. She deserved it (for being a phone-fool - and for driving a Getz). Mercedes-Benz - das Beste oder Nichts!
