Well. 929D came in 5th in that event for programming (only about 100 behind you) SO we decided to give that Zach kid a try.

hey zach, i wanted to experiment with color sensors like you have here. can you tell me your experiences with it? were their any issues where the sensors did not see the lines? do you need to go a certain speed for them to actually register when you were following the lines?

Hey! sorry if I can't answer this as thoroughly as you might want, this video was taken over 8 years ago. From what I remember, the color sensors had a pretty big margin of error between them and we built a rig to test and calibrate each one. We had around 15 of them and picked 5 that had the closest thresholds between them. As far as the code for line following goes we used "Smooth Line following" (taken from the FLL world because we all competed in that beforehand) which is basically just line following with PID so its not as jerky while it moves. You should in theory be able to go any speed with that, all comes down to tuning the PID loop. At every comp, and sometimes from field to field we had to calibrate the line sensors because of changing ambient lighting, so it might be smarter to build them shielded from outside light to help mitigate the error. Hope this answers your questions, lmk if you have any more!

@@Zach929U Thanks! That really helps. One last thing: do you remember if the sensors had any trouble seeing the line at higher speed?

@@austinsus13194A I don’t think our robot was particularly fast compared to current vexiq robots but we never has issues reading lines at max speed. At one point our drive was a bit faster and it still worked fine from what I remember.

You know that this came second in the world in programming at the world championship and stacking the same color resulted in a 2x multiplier to your score in programming skills!!!
