Spike Lee can direct the hell out of a scene. Every scene in this movie is memorable. This scene, in particular, is one of his bests. The acting by Phil and Anna (Very pretty in this movie btw), lighting, music in the background, everything in this scene just adds to a haunting effect. RIP Phil. We all miss you.

I have a new neighbor that looks like Phil. I love this movie too. Spike really matured in his movie making style and you can never go wrong with a Hip-Hop version of Cymandes Bra, that's very New York. Although I haven't been a New Yorker in decades, you bring that innovation with you wherever you go on this planet. Now all I need is for someone to respond with, "funny you should say that" and then not follow it up with anything...classic.

Anna Paquin is one of the few actresses (or actors) who successfully made the transition from child actress to adult actress, and, in an odd, kinda roundabout way, I feel like part of the way she eased through that transition was actually making USE of the fact that her face seemed familiar from younger roles...there's a handful or performances from around this time, this film, "The Squid and the Whale", where she plays a sort of borderline 'lolita' type, and apart from just being very talented, I feel like her being familiar in a younger version kind of adds to the audience's feeling of "ooooh wait a minute", or almost wanting to protect her...if this makes any sense, lol

The final segment is eerily depressing, and poignant. The disconnected preoccupation with what you've just done, the way everything drowns out but the thoughts in your head, and the emptiness of realizing what you thought you wanted wasn't at all what it seemed to be. The entirety of this, the way it was shot, and the artistry portrayed by Hoffman and the director--brilliance. All of it. You don't need to know what Hoffman's character is thinking to know what he's feeling; that's brilliance in acting.

@Nobiag

@@Jeremy-jm3fe @FilmGamer It was actually pretty good writing and the scene was far from stupid. there's so much more to it than what you make it look like and the decision to make her react like that was well thought through. sexual desire, love, human emotions in general don't always "make sense" like you imply or the way they do is not obvious. when she goes up the stairs the whole situation changes (the scratching in the music underlines this quite well). the power dynamic shifts, he approaches her now and they are alone in the bathroom now. maybe she played with him before and expected him to stay in control and reject her. after the kiss you see this great shot of him in front of the mirror. he has given in to his desires and shown a side of him, that he kept hidden before. It's very understandable that she is at least surprised and the implications of that kiss are a lot to process. also keep in mind, that her reaction was kinda neutral and we don't know how she will handle the situation in the long run. this scene was the last time we saw her in the movie. this way the viewer is left with questions and an uncertainty that kinda mirrors the confusion of her (and him). brilliant writing, great scene, great acting.

I think it was one of those things where she would of fantasised about sleeping with him, or him making a move on her, but when the opportunity arose she realised that it wasn’t actually what she wanted. My take after watching this scene was that she realised it wasn’t what she wanted and that it was actually really wrong, cause after all she is like 16 (the student, not sure about the actress) and I think it would of hit her that she kissed her teacher OR an older man just kissed her. Either way, it makes us look at our fantasies we have, how we’d feel if it actually happened.

I miss the previous scene at the beginning of the video, Mary's dance whilst approaching Jacob, which matches the same scene with Jacob's face at the end. Mary approaches him, and Jacob leaves, in a paradoxical way since it should be the opposite. The whole scene is perfection, but that dance of Mary is the introduction to everything, while Jacob leaving is the end to it.

Spike Lee , master of movie soundtracks that he tcan only pull off and then his color schemes in certain in depth scenes, making the the trunk door slam shut twice when he rescues Doyle the dog, why ? Why show trunk slam shut twice?? Here's what I feel Spike wanted the viewer so see and FEEL; Doyle's trama filled life as a dog with a life expectancy of a half hour was changed in kind act of taking him offf the streets and slamming the trunk shut to never go back to the mean streets of the Bronx ,sealed the deal and was deep scene on how quick one's life can change and the trunk was the end of Doyle's struggle to survive and the beginning of living and being loved ; if only we could shut the trunk door on some of life's horror filled events in back of a vintage muscle car to never return to the slums of the have nots, God bless Doyle and mercy for Monte, one of post 911 greatest Spike Lees joints.

You're gonna spend a lot of time dating in your life running into this exact situation and wondering why why why. She wasn't coming onto him. She has no idea the effect she has on him. She's high on E, she likes fucking with him and he seems to endlessly tolerate her regardless of what she says. In essence he's the perfect friend. Even the "Hey could you not mention this at school" thing is frugal, it's wise, a bit cowardly. She asks him if she could have an A in a class and he rebukes her, but she was half-serious... not likely because she wants an A, but because she wanted to know if he'd be willing to compromise himself for it. He's compromising himself and his career right now. That's what she enjoys about his company - adult attention. What she says is somewhat vapid and annoying, half drunk, fangirlish in a way but he listens, fascinated. She has a neglectful mother, and likely a missing father (or worse), and she doesn't have anyone in the world who's interested in her. She wants to go to places where adults gather because she wants to be an adult, she idolizes independence and desires it and it's everywhere but only because she's friends with this "man" does she get access to places like this whilst having a guardian. He's the perfect gateway into a more adult world - and she's completely and totally oblivious to the fact that he sexually desires her. It really is a surprise to her. Meanwhile this guy is battling with the concept that while he is a mentor, a friend, a confidant, it seems like that's the recipe of a long lasting relationship. It isn't. They're all mutually exclusive. She trusts him. That's it. Then he corners her. He's not rude or crass, he's not negative, he thinks it's what she wants but it's not - and she freezes. For her it's suddenly becoming a reality that he has an agenda. That there's a desire there - she might have suspected it, but women don't experience attraction the same way men do. It's a fundamentally different process. You're gonna spend a lot of time interpreting signals, reading books, preparing yourself morally and ethically but you will always be met by the wall - women have their ways, men have theirs, and we have a fundamental disconnect in communication. She's obviously on E, and drunk, and wildly messed up (you can tell by how touchy feely she is, but also by the fact that she's sweating like crazy, because mixing those two will give you wild heatstroke) so her momentary "touchy feely" moment is not an aggressive move. It's because touch is enhanced, it's why she's feeling her arms afterwards, tactile sensations are enhanced. She's not incoherent, she knows she's kind've messing with him, but women don't experience touch the same way men do, emotionally, because if a woman touches you on the shoulder it's whatever. You touch a woman on the shoulder? You have to weigh the efficacy of that maneuver and the chance that you might be misconstrued. It's why Keanu Reeves doesn't touch women in photo's. Sooner or later no matter how well you calculate those odds, someone's going to call you a creep. It's how you can see girls dance so naturally together, but why men are so wooden typically. There's some strange rule about being on a dance floor that changes all the rules, but really it comes down to inhibition. Women experience inhibition as an emotion, men generate it out of necessity and respect. You go to parties where people are drinking, this inhibition is destroyed, as alcohol does that - women will do all kinds of crazy things while drink. But don't you dare make a move then, because when they wake up tomorrow I guarantee you, it's a different person. It's a chemical process. It can happen with men too, but we usually just tuck it back. Amy tells sally who tells hannah who tells sarah who tells her mom, who tells all their moms, who then question Amy who partially lies (try's to soften it) and it comes out all wrong, they go a principle, she tells the truth, but the principle gets a different story from the mom's, he takes the sum-total to the cops, somebody gets expelled, goes to jail, and everybody just wants it to be over and done with no matter if it skewers somebodies life. Because culturally speaking we'd rather destroy 1 innocent person to catch the 99 other bastards out there. That's the worst-case scenario - the more realistic case? A girl freaks out as she's sobering up, a guy hears this and worries himself to death that night when he gets home thinking about that, and the cycle continues. She didn't know what she was doing, she didn't understand any of that because she's a lonely high schooler and he was an adult who invested time in her, took her to new places, exposed her to new things. It wasn't until she was under the red light (the symbology here is rampant) did it REALLY actually wake her up. And worse - she's backtracking over the night with this new revelation, just now realizing it, seeing it for what it is, and she feels partially betrayed, partially humiliated, partially sorry, partially wondering, partially interested, partially disgusted, partially wondering how long she'll remember this as her first kiss with an adult. Above all that, she's realizing something "bigger". He was willing to compromise his entire career to be with her - and it's not sexual. It's romantic. That one is hitting her in the face. When he comes to the door and she says, "Do you need to pee?" She's totally sincere. Completely unaware. By the end of this scene she's got a LOT to process. All of what he'd done, what he's saying, is now being propped up and she's wide-eyed amazed. Scared because she could destroy this guy. It's all becoming clear to her right now, and the fact that he made a move anyway. And here's the real conflict. He just gave her proof that he not only cares for her, but is interested in her, and presented himself as a romantic partner in her life. If that happened, his life is over. Putting aside his own gratification, that moment was absolutely nearly impossible for her to comprehend because... And here's the kicker...
@BigMac8000
3 жыл бұрын
She has to accept that somebody cares about her enough and is interested in her enough to do something like that. Might be for the first time her life. And when he walks out the door, knowing this is all wrong, she has to make a decision in that bathroom. Do I believe I'm worth enough as a person for someone to risk everything for me? Or do I objectify myself and convince myself he just wanted me for sex, and rationalize that he's just a bad person - so I don't have to accept the warmth of human intimacy he just attempted with me? And that's the circuitboard that explodes every time you make a move on a girl, and you can't circumvent it away because it's a choice. It's just a choice, it isn't made for anyone. Most people don't want to give up their misery, it's like a warm blanket, so they go with the second choice. The first ones? They'll be flattered, but you'll have challenged them anyway and they... will.... freeze. He kissed her, kinda cornered her, maybe a bit aggressive but when you're in that situation, just tell her. Just say it. For the moment resist the temptation to side with this man because we've seen his story - we've seen his side, we empathize with him but really take in that hollowed look that happened after. It will happen to you at some point if you date regularly. Just tell her how you feel and then get out of the room because I'll tell ya, no girl I ever dated until I got married BELIEVED they were sexually attractive, intimately attractive, trustworthy or a potential romantic partner. I dunno why that is, but most women just can't. Humility is just hardwired in. There are some exceptions but they make that choice so early and it becomes so obvious you'll notice it 5 minutes in. But most? Totally oblivious. They just wanna dance and drink, have fun and really really really not think about things, because in their daily life they're thinking about every tiny piece of minutia - but miss the biggest stuff. They can't feel your anxiety, they can't feel your respect, they can't intuit it from your behavior because when a girl respects you? She's all up on you about it. She communicates a bunch of respect for this man and he just communicates, "I worry about everything". Make it plain. Make it simple. Don't read signals. Women give signals you will never understand, and they will never understand once you present them back to them, and we send signals they will never understand - it's.... a zoo. Just say it. Start there, don't get fancy, don't try to intuit, don't assume, REALLY don't assume.... and there's some girls who get off on this situation but it runs dry the moment it goes from "fun" to physical intimacy. It implodes on a dime. A lotta girls just hope a guy will keep it in check forever because they desperately want a man to respect them and talk to them - that can happen when you're in love, but they just want "THAT". As men we should want the same thing but we're kinda loners and instead read books and go a different road. And when you tell a girl these feelings, expect that same look from her. It just means you fried her brain for a second. Give her space. Because 99% of the time they will have no idea, and the ones that did, will dare not believe it because love is a beautiful thing, and the pro's can't assume anything because they're desperate for it as much as anyone, and so they _don't_ assume. They'll act flattered but the emotion will really be, "Wow, I AM living another dream tonight, I'm having a hard time believing it" I'm not trying to be sexist here, and some of this is generalizations but the core of it - women and men have a fundamental communication glitch. If you can respect that and identify it, this scene is.... magic. Because you get a perfect look at the dysfunction of intimate couples and it can extend far beyond relationships between men and women - we all have fundamental communication issues trying to connect. If you can take this scene as is, and identify that disconnect, you've got what they were trying to capture on film. Realize there are two actors here too, and not 100% of this is acting. They picked two actors who had a fundamental different style and layed that up so you could SEE IT, it's not just a scene they're depicting. What she wanted was not what it appears to be - she wants a lot from him, but when it comes to intimacy, she wouldn't even be able to tell you adequately her feelings on that subject. Neither could he. They could give you summaries but... even they don't truly know. It's why they're both shocked. Take this away with you. Don't drop hot on a girl like this - there's a lotta girls who'll say they want you to make the first move, it's bullshit, throw it out, that's just them trying shirk the responsibility of being the one to decide. They want you to take that choice away, that's a fantasy, not a reality. Some people call it breaking consent, and some people want you to do that - don't. It's not worth it. That's a fantasy. It's not worth being that wrong - putting aside what might happen to you, imagine what happened in this scene. To put it another way - when we think of making out in a bathroom at a club it sounds hot. Look at that bathroom. It's probably rank in there. Nobody wants that. Fantasy vs. Reality. Almost no one in life expects warmth, love and companionship from another human being. Warm them up to it first. Just offer it and let it grow - don't throw it at people. Don't assume they can handle it. Don't assume you want to give it to them because of how you feel at a given moment. It's a mistake. You can just offer it - but when you feel yourself letting out a sigh of true, sincere and honest half-choked relief, that's when you're probably "ok". And it usually happens in a talk, not after a move you made. You'll regret the moves. You won't regret the talks. You'll really wish you talked first. I've been there and this well runs deeper than I'm saying. Connecting with anybody is like star charting the universe. You discover black holes by the absence of stars and discover new planets off the sheen from distant suns, it's whacky, and you're gonna lose your mind and get burned at the stake a few times for heresy - even sometimes when you did it all right. You're here so part of you knows this. Good luck in your own endeavors man.

This is why I love this film, it's just one massive morality tale and each of the character's stories has two sides. On the one hand, she's being flirtatious and teasing with him and making straight up sexual advances towards him by rubbing his hands on her bare waist and on the other hand, she's just a naive 16/17 year old girl with no father or father figure ('mom is probably with her boyfriend') completely drunk and high off ecstasy which makes your skin hyper sensitive to touch, its not unusual for people high on the drug to touch eachother/themselves in non-sexual ways. I think the latter half is more likely, she wasn't leading him on and she didn't like him. He's just a sad little man who ultimately takes advantage of her. Her face at the end says it all, she's just a confused, naive teenage girl and he's a grown man. The acting in this film is impeccable and so fun to dissect lol sorry.

That terrible scratching not only ruins this whole scene for me but it also ruins this incredible Cymande track.
