I think Simon deserves some credit for being able to hang around with Louis longer than some guys. He only made it 6 rounds here, but their first fight lasted 13. Incidentally, does anyone recognize Abe Simon as one of Lee J. Cobb's henchman in the classic On The Waterfront.

if you watch the fight closely Louis basically smothered everything Simon threw at him. Louis simply didn't give him room. To say that the heavyweight division was "crap" is unfair. There were plenty of great fighters during that era. The problem is that "technically sound" meant something different during that era. Fighters didn't learn like they do today. Simons however was a tough game guy and shows the Louis would be able to knockout the heavies today.

Louis was 14 stone 11 1/2 which is 207 1/2 pounds. Louis had just turned 28 then he lost 4 years 3 months of his career due to the war. Heavyweights are in their physical prime between the ages of 28 and 32. When he returned after the war he generally fought around 212 lbs. So you have to figure his prime weight would have been 210 lbs. Just imagine if there had been no war, he would have probably had well over 30 title defenses.

Louis was a great fighter , I rank him equal to or above Ali but it would be a bad style match up for him. Putting a slower Boxer-puncher against Ali is not good for the other fighter. Plus Ali could take a punch even if he happened to land something.
