@@ReloadingWeatherby there's nothing inherently wrong with 270, but bot 270 win, and 270 wsm, are over powdered. The reason match shooters never go over 3000 fps when shooting is because it causes more barrel flex , and they find better results with heavy bullets that put velocity below 2800. Also less torque from less velocity and powder Yes, you need higher twist for heavier bullet, which adds back torque. . But basically, it's not the right route for optimal accuracy because if powder burns beyond the end of the barrel, that secondary explosion impacts bullet flight and hurts accuracy. 270 is fine, but it has to be loaded below max powder charge to be really accurate, at which point you might as well run creedmoor, which gives a lighter rifle and possible higher magazine capacity.

I do believe that it was kind of a flop because Winchester and Browning have to pay royalties for every rifle sold chambered in 270WSM. Good review! What weight rifle are your recoil figures based off? 3300fps is about max I’ll want to go. .270 WSM 130grain at 3275fps = 18.7ft/lbs of recoil. .270 WSM 150grain at 3000fps = 18.9ft/lbs of recoil. Both in a 3.63kg/8lb rifle. The 300WSM in a 3.75kg/8.35lb rifle with a 150grain bullet at 3300fps is 22.5ft/lbs of recoil. The 270wizzum has a great following here in Oz & NZ. I’ve owned all 4 of the Wizzums. For me it’s the 270 & 300 Wizzums but that 325 hits as hard as my old 338’s in 220 grains to the 338’s 225grain. These days I use the 9.3x62 over my 338 win mag, I just like the 9.3x62 better for walking Sambar deer up.

I have a Tikka T3 that I swapped over from 300wsm to 270wsm. Reasoning was two-fold. First, ammo availability- I couldn't find 300 at the time but saw a number of boxes of .270wsm so I figured I'd pick up a $100 tikka barrel off ebay and go for it. Second, I decided that within practical ranges, that 300 wouldn't do anything more than my 30-06 would as long as I did my part in taking a good shot- it's just hard to beat the dirty 30's for bullet weight selection & versatility. All that being said I like the .270wsm but I just might swap the tube again for a 7PRC as long as the market embraces the cartridge. Thinking back- I remember reading that a great fishing lure has to catch fisherman before it will ever catch fish. Same story with this industry- all marketing & hype. The elk won't care much if it's hit in the same spot by a .270win or a WSM.

From a european standpoint the 277. cartridges lack on heavy bullets over 154gr (10,0g), which the 284. calibers propose. Only Nosler have a 160 gr Partition on sell. For common driven hunts with the usual recommendation for a bolt rifle in 7mm and with a least 10g bullets is that to less. And in the next years leadfree bullets will become the new normal in European countries by European and national legislature. The 270 Win and the 270 WSM are fine cartridges, but they need more and heavier bullets for a fair fight on 7mm Cartridges like 7x64 or 280 Rem.

Yeah, arguably the 7's are better, but I have a thing about the .270 WSM. With a 1-8" Twist barrel, you can run the 165gr Nosler AccuBond Long Range, 170gr Berger EOL or 175gr Sierra TGK. If you compare the 7's and the .27's, in the Nosler lineup they're nearly identical, but at the same weight, the .27 is marginally better. I love the .270 WSM and I really get one, but realistically speaking, I think I'd go 6.5-284 or 6.5 PRC. Also, interesting side-note, if you compare the .270 WSM with the 165gr ABLR and the .300 WSM with the 190 ABLR, the .270 actually has better performance once you start pushing the distance... but by that point a small fraction would still take that shot at 600+

WSMs don’t feed well or smoothly. I had a 300WSM jam on a black bear hunt…luckily the first shot did the job. I sold it. It was easy to reload and accurate but hunting you need to cycle rounds fast and smoothly. I was very interested in the 6.8 western 1:8 but it doesn’t seem like it will make it. The other thing is that you can get five 270 or 280 Ackley rounds in a magazine where 3 is usually max for the 270 WSM. It’s a good round but it has a few drawbacks.

I think the .277s and the 7mms have long been hampered by slow twist rates. If we had standardized on an 8.4 or even an 8 twist for these calibers, instead of a 9.5 for the 7mm and an even more ridiculous 10 twist for the .277s, it would open up more options and add a lot if utility to these cartridges. Being limited to 150 gr for the .277s limits its appeal to those hunting game heavier than deer. I really think the 6.8 Western is everything the .270 WSM should have been from the beginning, and I hope it catches on, because I am tired of hearing about the damn 6.5s.

I love my 6.8 western. It has way more potential when you handload than Winchester and brownings factory offerings. They have really sold it short. I'm still creeping up slowly since reloading data is at a minimum, and what's out there is extremely conservative. The 165 accubond factory offering for example gives a velocity of 2970 on the box. I've already got 162 hammer hunters going almost 3200. The 175 sierra tipped game king factory offerings are advertised at 2835fps. I have them going a little over 3000fps so far. I've also got the 170 bergers up closer to 3100. I haven't reached pressure in any of my testing so far. And I don't know if I just got a dandy of a barrel, but it shoots everything lights out. It even shoots the factory 175s at half inch. I've got some of my handloads down to .2s. it's my favorite cartridge now, and I really hope it catches on. If not, I guess it's a good thing I reload

@@ReloadingWeatherby Thanks. I am trying to figure out the advantages of the .270 win over the .270 wsm other than ammo price and availability. Feeding is usually smoother from a .270 win and should hold more rounds than a similarly built rifle in .270 wsm. Driving those 150 grain bullets at 3150 fps is not negligible though, putting the .270 wsm near a .270 wby performance.
@brennenlee7715

7mm rem mag and 270wsm are too close... because the 7mm exists exactly... even the 270Winchester alone had alot of complaints about it being too fast for lighter bullets (130s@3150 fps) and the wsm just multiplies the issue so theres no reason to have it unless you're wanting to fling the heavier ones a little faster... on that note, with the 7mm you get better b.c. bullet options and the only reason to have a magnum is to shoot a heavier bullet anyway so you're just punishing yourself with recoil and burning extra powder for marginal performance with the 270wsm

I agree that the 7mm Rem Mag must have been what is keeping the 270 WSM from getting popular. But I don't think it is just a question of the 7mm Rem Mag being already capable of doing the same with a 150gn bullet. It has more to do with the fact the 7mm Rem Mag can use 2 really cummon heavier bullet weights (165 & 175) with its standard twist rate. The 270 WSM is just stuck with 150gn because of its design limitation (twist rate & C.O.L.).. unless you go with a custom build... witch is probably too much trouble compare to just buying a standard 7mm Rem Mag... or a 6.8 Western maybe! ;)

@@feuerland81 yeah, I'm in the line to rebarrel my .308 at some point, probably next year. I'm looking for a relatively cheap cartridge to use for LR target shooting, but can also hunt Gemsbok (I live in Africa - Gemsbok are similarly sized to Elk). For me a 6.5 Magnum makes the most sense, so my 3 main contenders there are the PRC, 6.5-284 and 6.5 Sherman Short Mag - I like odd cartridges, so I'm leaning more towards the -284. 130gr AccuBond going over 3000fps will be a good combo - all 3 do it though, so the choice is tough lol. Each rifle behavior are different You take two rifles same caliber same bullets One would shoot one hundred feet per seconds slower and the other might shoot a couple of hundred feet per seconds faster and show no signs of high pressure. No 3 Talking about a caliber use a reloading manuals. A reloading manuals are a starting point. A starting point and ending point to follow. No every load well do as that manual says. Because each rifle or a pistol have there own character like a person. No.4 About 3.7 billions people in United States. 75% of them owns fire arms Every one have their own personally just like every rifle and pistol they own. .no.5 For me I like some of your videos.
