Yet again we see Ghamidi sahab pulling a classic off his handbook - sheer display of incomplete knowledge and inadequate research. The _Aayat_ in _Surah Tawbah_ that reads *_"...kill them wherever you find them..."_* is not an ordinance which called for mass murder and genocide of the _Mushrikeen_ (Arab polytheists). It's such a shame that Ghamidi advocates interpreting the Ahadeeth in light of the Quran; meanwhile, himself, does not even interpret the Quran in its own light. He isolates this verse without taking into consideration the overall theme and backstory of this chapter; the latter being evident in the chapter's earliest verses. Makkah has always been a sacred city where bloodshed is strictly forbidden. And on top of that, the sanctity of Masjid-ul-Haraam is maintained with an even higher degree of caution. Few years into the _Hijrah_ (Muslim migration to Yathrib), Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] signed a peace treaty with the residents of Makkah. The relationship between these two factions had been tense since the dawn of Islam, and its political aspect was facing turbulence just a year or two after the treaty. That's when Makkans breached the treaty, most notably by engaging in hostilities towards Muslim ally tribes. Their actions were construed as an act of war, as per the treaty itself. It is then that the verses of this chapter were revealed where exception was granted to the Muslims that they could fight the enemy in Makkah, even in Masjid-ul-Haraam if need be.

Salam Alaikum dear respected brother Arshad, I can understand your critique of Ustad Ghamidi on the background of surah Tawbah. Ustad Ghamidi is not unaware of the historical background you have pointed above regarding surah Tawbah. He himself has indicated in his tafseer al-Bayan, the historical and political background you highlighted. He just hasn't highlighted them here, since it was not pertinent to the issue being discussed. Besides the political reality that is taking place in the ground, there is a divine scheme which is also being carried out during the conquest of Makkah. This is what he has tried to highlight here. No doubt, the breach of the treaty of Hudaibiya by the Makkans and other such crimes acted as the catalyst for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his sahabah to justify the final military campaign towards Makkah. You are justified in drawing this conclusion if you read Surah Taubah in isolation, without placing it to the overall narrative of the Qur’an. Let us look at the following part of surah Taubah: “And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way.” If the conquest of Makkah was just a way to counter the past atrocities and crimes of the Makkans then the above conditions seem to be odd. The polytheists were given two choices: either to accept Islam or leave the land. Otherwise they would be executed. They were not given the option to practice polytheism even if they surrender militarily to the Prophet. A mere political and military campaign doesn’t carry such theological conditions. To interpret the entire 23 years of prophetic mission of Rasulullah (ﷺ) as a political and military campaign or as a social revolution would be a classic example of loosing the forest for the trees. .... .... .... .... ....

... ... ... ... In order to understand the life of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) it is important to understand few crucial aspects about the narrative of the Quran. It is as if the Quran is doing commentary on the life of Prophet Muhammad. As Ustad Ghamidi has tried to highlight elsewhere, with regards to its subject-matter, Quran is the narrative of a messenger's warning (indhar in Arabic) to his people. Seen in this light Quran would be the best biography of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The crucial point to realize in this regard is the difference between a Prophet (nabi) and a Messenger (rasul). Messengers are special prophets who carry out a divine mission on Earth. Let us try to understand that mission and the history of all the Prophets and Messengers sent by Allah. We will then see the pattern emerging and would help us understand the wisdom behind Allah's plan with humanity. As the Quran claims the unity of God and unity of man, initially mankind had one religion: belief in one God and humanity to man. But then as history progressed, human beings deviated from this basic and simple religion (which we can call basic Islam) by adding to it alien doctrines and practices. In order to guide them back to the correct religion, God decided to send prophets and books to different nations. The prophets would remind them of their duty towards God (they didn't bring any new information with regards to this doctrine, it is already innate in all human beings) and responsibility towards his creation. They would also warn them of the day of judgment when God will judge based on our deeds. But even after hearing the rational evidence and seeing God's signs in his creation, people of the prophet's nation would deny him knowingly. In order to establish demonstrable proof of His message, Allah then decided to appoint certain of these prophets as messengers. According to Quran Nuh (a.s.) would be the first such messenger on Earth. A messenger starts his mission as a prophet, calling people to rectify their deviation. They would give rational evidence and proof to his people in order for them to think and self-reflect. But then during this prophetic phase of the messenger's mission will come a time when Allah decides that no more evidence would be presented as those people will not mend their ways and his judgment would now take place on Earth. For this, the messenger and those who responded to his call are divinely instructed to separate from the rejecters. Nuh's (alaihissalam) ark was this separation, it separated the believers from the disbelievers. Allah then sends the forces of nature to establish his judgment for the nation of the messenger on this very Earth, believers are saved/victorious and rejecters punished, just like what will take place in the day of judgment. The objective is to establish historical witness of the day of judgment, in Quranic terminology this is called 'shahadah' (witness). In short, we can summarize the difference between a prophet and a messenger: a messenger's call culminates to a witness. This is the reason we say 'I bear witness Muhammad is Allah's Messenger' and not merely Allah's prophet. This is what is referred to in the Quran as the 'sunnatAllah', the divine practice of God through his messengers. The story of Saalih, Lut, Musa, Ibraheem, Isa (alaihimussalam) all have this feature in common since all of them came as Allah's messengers. Space doesn't permit, but it would be instructive to see how Allah's judgment took place at various degrees for all of these personalities and their respective nations. ... ... ... ...
