Thanks JDB! I agree, i'm glad they finally discussed the movies they were afraid to discuss because of backlash or controversy; but i'm always up for hearing different takes on things even if i passionately agree with all the star wars sequel hate, its always fascinating that people have different reasons for why one is "less worse" than another. And i loved when they talked about how they tend to differentiate 'favourite' from 'best'; I do that too because its an effort to seperate my biased subjective take from what the text is objectively doing (but objective has become a bit of a writing curse word where its used more as a justification for subjective frustration than it is an attempt to look at it without any personal emotional baggage)

Timestamps: 0:55 - Dan Wells introduces the heir to his throne (aka daughter), and Brandon introduces Dan and explains how they met in college. 3:15 - How Brandon and Dan helped each other break into the industry and get published. (And general thoughts on "industry life" as a writer) 4:50 - The Way of Kings leatherbounds are finished, and Kickstarter backers should receive their books within a few months 6:25 - Brandon and Dan look back on their first ever Magic: The Gathering pre-release (Mirrodin), and the professional Magic career that never came to be 7:52 - Dan's experience with roleplaying and being a professional GM. (He has a Twitch show called TypeCastRPG, check it out! DnD on Tuesdays, Star Trek Adventures every other Wednesday. Want to hire him? Look up TheDanWells!) 15:00 - Dan Wells, besides being an author, has also done a bunch of audio originals (which you might notice if you look at the posters behind him). His latest, Stargazer, comes out tomorrow, and you can listen for free if you're an Audible subscriber! 17:42 - Brandon did a live roleplaying session once. It was one of the worst experiences of his life. (Truly the sign of someone who's an outliner and not a pantser.) 19:50 - Dan and Brandon describe their two-year Eberron DnD campaign. Brandon's character was...unique. Intro concluded. Commence answering of questions from chat: 22:00 - First question from chat: How did Brandon and Dan become friends? (This was kind of covered in the intro, but here we get some more details, including the fun nicknames for everyone in their writing group, and Dan's first story, which was "very anime.") 24:22 - Fun fact: Jasnah Kholin being a historian is partially an homage to an elf historian from one of Dan's early stories! (Continuation of the "origin story" of Brandon and Dan's friendship) 25:40 - Brandon asks Dan: is networking at conventions still a good way for aspiring authors to break into the industry? (Answer: you'll have a harder time networking than Dan and Brandon did, although some cons now have formal pitch sessions which can be good. But now, you can reach agents online!) 31:02 - Star Trek movies ranked. (Chat asked for a ranking of Star Wars movies, but Brandon misheard this, and they decided that a Star Trek movie ranking would be more fun.) 36:00 Star Wars movies ranked. (Really more of a "Star Wars hot takes" segment than an actual ranking) 51:17 - Thoughts on WandaVision? (They love it!) 53:35 - Discussion of TV storytelling (Dan likes episodic stories, while Brandon doesn't. Also, look forward to Brandon's upcoming video essay on The Good Place!) 58:40 - Top 5 Marvel movies! (The question asked for a full ranking of the MCU, but that would take way too long.) 1:06:00 - Brandon's bold prediction for the MCU (and what he hopes for from Black Widow and Loki) 1:09:30 - Rank the three Indiana Jones movies. ("There are FOUR Indiana Jones movies!" - Dan "Picard" Wells) 1:13:23 - Harry Potter movies and books ranked (and the difficulties of book-to-movie adaptations) 1:21:05 - Lord of the Rings movies and books, which quickly transforms into a discussion of the movie-making industry as a whole 1:28:54 - Brandon's theory on why good movies are hard to write, and what Hollywood can do to make better writers 1:33:40 - The Queen's Gambit (Dan likes it) 1:35:30 - Christopher Nolan movies ranked 1:37:48 - A brief digression on the topic of "which movie I think is the best" vs "which movie is my personal favorite" (before continuing with the Nolan discussion) 1:54:38 - Praise for films that take a chance with original ideas rather than banking on established IP...though Brandon and Dan still hope you'll support any movie adaptations of their work (Continuation of the Christopher Nolan discussion: Nolan might sometimes miss, but he shoots for the moon!) Things wind down after this, ending with a bit of self-promotion: 1:56:02 - Reminder: Stargazer is the third book in Dan Wells' Zero G audiobook series. It comes out tomorrow, listen for free with your Audible Plus subscription! 1:56:22 - If you're interested in hearing Brandon and Dan talking about story structure, consider picking up Shadows Beneath! It includes stories by both of them along with the other Writing Excuses hosts (Mary Robinette Kowal and Howard Tayler), along with transcripts of their brainstorming sessions, early drafts, and discussion of why they revised parts of their stories. Dan signed several copies while he was over at Brandon's place, so you might get a copy signed by both Brandon and Dan if you order it from Brandon's store! 1:58:33 - Dan is signing cover image posters for his Zero G audiobook series. You can buy them from his website (TheDanWells) 1:59:25 - If you order from Brandon's store, you may get one of the stickers shown here as a freebie. 2:00:17 - Dan Wells' Zero G is also coming out with print edition and ebook editions! 2:02:05 - We'll be back in two weeks with special guest Nick Martell (Brandon cover-blurbed Nick's debut novel, The Kingdom of Liars, which came out last year)

As a big factor in writing and publishing, would you be able to do a video on how you went about learning this process? I completely agree with Brandon and Dan about watching shows on tv and their storytelling pacing. I don't need so many flashbacks in episodes. @@ChristmasLore Seems you can't understand plain English, and care more about being critical than helping. How the heck did you get what you did from my previous comments? I suppose a good imagination is needed to be a writer, but you shouldn't invent thigs about others. That's a Democrat politician's job. I can't make it more plain, so I'll just say it again: I have five solid book projects in different genres. I'd like to know which has the best chance of being picked up. There is nothing wrong with wanting to achieve a bit of success from my hard work. Considering this and opportunity cost, any aspiring novelist with several equal options would be a moron to choose one without investigating the market and his prospects. I should probably tell you that was a veiled insult. Lord knows you don't comprehend what you read.
@Alexander-tu3iv
3 жыл бұрын
@@desertgecko4549 What are the other genres? Except for Romance and Mystery, Fantasy has the biggest market. It really depends on the exact ideas though. It has to both stand out from the rest but also be marketable. Twitter pitches like pitmad have become popular in recent years, where you pitch your novel (has to be completed) and editors and agents can like it if they are interested in a query. Because it's solicited, they will pay more attention to it when you send your query letter, it's a great way to stand out from the crowd. But you need to be able to write a pitch of 280 characters (How ever long a tweet is) which does something new or puts an interesting twitch on an old idea or otherwise hooks a reader. So imo pick the idea which is the most unique and grabby but also can be compared to other books enough that it can be marketed well. It's also important to consider that it's quite difficult to switch genres when you already have an established career so picking the genre you love to write in the most should also be a consideration. But yeah there's nothing wrong with maximizing your chances to get published. There's usually a huge disconnect with writers tending to be romantics and agents and publishers being business people. They don't care if you redefined the genre or have something emotionally profound to say, is it entertaining and can they make money off it? Many new aspiring writers don't really get that, so if you understand the market you're already ahead of the curve. Although of course it means shit if you don't have the writing skills needed.

No... the best Star Trek movie of them all is "The Wrath of Khan," at least until I see more than the first JJ Abrams movie. Ricardo Montalban is even better than Patrick Stewart for me, even though I loved him as Picard in The Next Generation. As for Star Wars... I haven't seen the latter two of the prequels yet (not because I disliked them... I just haven't yet--same for the Return of the King and the last 2 Hobbit movies... I just haven't, no good reason. So, for me, the worst of Star Wars was The Last Jedi, mainly because of the way they treated Luke Skywalker. Plus not long after I'd seen the original (A New Hope, now) there were rumors that Lucas had written 12 scripts in a Star Wars sequence as part of a thesis in film school or something. So why (besides Lucas being arrogant) weren't the stories/movie better than they were? All they needed was someone to reign George in like they did for the first three, particularly A New Hope.
