I totally get where you are coming from! And this is not disagreeing with you, just another way of looking at things: I know a group of people who were being given tips for living frugally. One was to buy good quality clothes and shoes. The reason: They will last a long time when taken care of. I used to buy only cheap stuff, and never liked/appreciated them because they felt cheap. But anything I ever bought that was high quality, I liked and kept for a long time. My point is that, if you can, try guy high quality - that doesn't necessarily mean new - you could even buy used clothing that's cheap but high quality. One thing I always wanted was a good formal winter coat (long). But they are not cheap. But once I saw one that was really nice, and ON SALE!!! It was still a couple of hundred dollars, but those are usually $400+ .. I splurged and honestly I love that coat. I've had people stop me and ask where I got it. Of course, sometimes I've had almost no money and had to buy something cheap just to achieve a purpose (e.g. Job interview) - So I get both sides of the argument :-) Hope you and your family are doing great!

The upper has a veneer that cracks and flakes and cannot be repaired. Pretty tragic waste of a highly skilled cordwainer's labour hours, but this was also a thought experiment to see what he could make of it. To its credit, Wallmart and others have made shoes cheep and widely available so imagine a time when everyone DID NOT have cheep footwear and the appeal of a 30 dollar part of boots becomes more appreciated.

Seeing “toxic” reminded me of a story. My nephews visited us in JAX, we then took them to visit my son, then at FSU. They stayed at a friend of my son’s apartment. One of my nephews would wear a pair of shoes until my sister would throw them out. The smell from the shoes he was wearing were so bad the roommates made him put them in the hall. After numerous complaints to the front office by passing residents they were moved to outside balcony. Passerby’s entering the building passed under the balcony to enter & they too complained about the smell. Impressive, right. They ended up burning them that night. Truly toxic.

You know it feels like you are mocking economy shoes. What about all the people that can barely afford those economy ones? Shame?

It's funny, I have a pair of Aldo chukka boots that I bought on eBay for $2.25, (I'm wearing them right now) that I was thinking of sending you guys to see what you could do with them. They're a little better quality than those, but I think they're still just glued together. Can we talk about upgrading mine too?

I'd suggest sending a different pair. My very 1st pair of dress shoes were Aldos, wore then for 8 months. The upper leather just ripped from the welt whilst walking. Took the opportunity to rip the entire shoe open - leather is extremely thin and could tear with my fingers.

@@TheNunakun I've been wearing my chukka boots for about 6 months and I've been surprised at how well they're standing up. Since I paid next to nothing for them, I've been wearing them like work boots, shoveling snow, demolishing my kitchen, etc, and they still look good. No tears or popped stitching, and good wear on the tread.

Don't think that shoes were so badly made. I mean, they cost 28$ it's pretty cheap for a pair of shoes that don't look that bad.

Funny, I think I bought same shoes from Ross, sold under Calvin Klein brand or something like that. They've long fallen apart.

That’s what I was thinking about to do with a pair of shoes from H&M or JCPenney stores but none of them like them. I know is going to cost me like a pair of shoes from Florsheim. I don’t know if I spelled it right.
