Elements of the 29th Infantry Division cross the Roer River at Jülich, Germany on February 23, 1945. Part of "Operation Grenade," the Roer River crossings by the Ninth Army between Roermond and Düren marked one of the first official phases of the renewed offensive into Germany by Allied armies. This footage is not staged and was shot on the day of the operation, not far from enemy lines.
This footage was shot by Signal Corps photographer Donald B. Calamar of the 167th Signal Photographic Company. Calamar received the Silver Star from Gen. Gerhardt for an action in November 1944 in which he put down his camera to rescue two separate wounded 29th Infantry Division soldiers.
