Colin, I'm with you mate. Always been a Gibson guy. I have an ES-335 and a 70s Deluxe reissue. Both excellent guitars but I have an Eastman T-386 - got it secondhand off a chap in Wales for 750 quid. The quality is outrageous and that isn't even close to their top of the line ES-style guitar, the T59. The T-386 is not an inferior guitar to the Gibson ES-335, at a third the price or so. I do prefer the Gibson fretwire and more narrow nut width though. The SB59/v has my eye now, looks amazing, and as far as I know, nut width and frets are the same as a Gibson

Excellent video. Hard not to like all of them, but the Gibson cherry burst is my least favorite aesthetically. I do like dark cherry burst, but that is just too light for me. To my ears, the Tokai has the best high end tone, almost a sweetness to it, though less crunch than the others. Most likely, the higher output. I like the Tokai basic wood, not as fancy as the others, more of a workhorse guitar, beautiful in its simplicity. I also like the fact that it is punching well above its weight. The Maybach is great as well. Much better cherry burst than the Gibson and sounded better to my ears. Eastman also really nice, but I feel the finish is just too easy to relic. After a few years of hard playing, I think it will look beaten down - just my opinion though. I have looked at the Heritage, but they are expensive compared to other single cuts, and not sure if really worth it. So many choices, but I'd take the Maybach and the Tokai.

When is a Gibson not a Gibson? Well its a Tokai....generally. Closest guitar to a genuine Gibson LP I have ever played was a Tokai and man that baby sang. That said not played the others, but they have the look and reckon the feel and kinda the awesome LP sound? What we have to remind ourselves is that before we mock the Gibson LP for any reason at all, every guitar here is a copy of the Gibson LP, and that is for a reason. The late great Mr Les Paul designed and made a legend. Awesome vid Colin as always, and just love your playing and the banter, its what us nerds need mate! Well hard decision as they all sound great! I supposed I always aspired to a 59 Les Paul..... until I played a Gibson 60s. Neck is perfect, sounds great & perhaps more dynamic, Grover tuners feel better, the colours & tops I think are better & although look plainer, pop the flame when you pick them up or turn them in the light. The other thing is their consistency. Probably played 5 of them before & after the one I bought & they all felt exactly the same. The interpretation of a 59 neck even within Gibson / Epiphone seem to vary, but must admit the red or pinky colour of yours one is not to my liking & I love the understated look & flame of my unburst. I think the Les Paul 60s in the current Gibson line up is very underated & overlooked, may be try & swap your 50s for a 60s?

I'm assuming you do these cutting block shootouts to gage reaction, and use any input to try'n make the best decisions. As a casual observer, I encourage you to prioritize the reasons YOU, bought these guitars in the first place. What are you after in a LP? Personally, none of them have any advantages on looks alone. Again, only YOU can decide what looks good. Tones? Pickups and hardware can be changed. I'd keep the 2 that feel and play the best. How bout keeping 1 with low output vintage voiced tones predominantly. And then 1 with more modern higher output situations happening. That's what I'd do. Peace!

Cool comparison. To me they all sounded like Les Pauls, and I would have trouble telling them apart, but I did think the Tokai had a slight bit of mellowness compared to the others that I found pleasing. Re: the Gibson love/hate: Gibson's have a cachet in the US, and probably to a lesser extent elsewhere as well. In the US there are a lot of players for whom there is no substitute, Tom Bukovac being a prime example. If he buys a Les Paul or an SG or a 335, it's going to be a Gibson, and most likely an expensive vintage one at that. Also there are a lot of people here in the US who celebrate their financial success by buying trophies. There are wealthy people who played guitar when they were young, and now that they have money are happy to pay tens of thousands for wall hanger trophies. As I also said about Epiphone, as long as their standard product line stays consistently priced I have no problem with a company taking advantage of that part of the market. As always thanks for the video.

53:20 I prefer the Burstbuckers, one of my Les Paul guitars has Burstbucker #1 & #2, the other Les Paul I have has the Burstbucker #2 & #3. For whatever reason, my playing and amp setup has be loving the Burstbuckers. I'm playing through a Marshall 1987x half stack and have zero problems with feedback due to the unpotted design of those pickups. Love the vintage tone they have, all my humbuckers measure in the 8K Ohm or less due to my personal preference, they seem very articulate, although the #2 Burstbuckers exhibit a kind of nasally quack type tone.

Great review as usual Colin really enjoyed it. A good collection there all of those guitars are really nice. Personally i would have kept the Maybach even though it's a worn finish and i'm not a fan of reliced guitars. But it's a very light reliced/worn finish as shown on their site. The Tokai is great value a Japanese made "Les Paul" at a reasonably affordable price. My Les Paul style guitar i currently own is not in the same league as these guitar's. It's a Chinese made Fernandes/Burny in lemon drop finish although it looks more like amber finish to me. I bought it from Ebay about a year ago listed as unboxed never used it was basically new for £410.00. It's a good enough Les Paul guitar for a home hobbyist guitar player. As Fernandes has recently gone bust i will keep it in my collection.

Don't worry about the colour, I have that same model (heritage cherry sunburst I think it's called) and it looked ugly when I bought it, kind of pinkish, but after two years it's getting darker, yellower, and much nicer looking (I didn't have to put it in the sun). It's my favourite guitar. Of all the others I've only tried the Maybach (that exact model too): I bought it online and sent it back after trying it for a few minutes. My Gibson is a hundred times better. Now I'm thinking of trying out an Eastman, though. Thanks for the great video, Colin!

I feel exactly the same about Gibson😂. Had my first Les Paul at 18. I’m 49 now and I still have one🤪

Excellent unbiased review Col.. as always. The Maybach snarls like a gdun, but so did the Tokai and the Eastman (when you cranked her up!).. Glad it's you choosing which ones to offload mate!!

Really enjoyed this show Colin… not surprised you decided to hang on to the Eastman. I thought it looked gorgeous and for me sounded wonderful. All amazing guitars though and unless I win the lottery I’ll never own an LP as nice as any of those; that said, for the less affluent of us I love my Sire L7. :)

I still prefer the Gibson with the Maybach right on its heels. I felt that they had the most bite by far. Honestly, though, I would never pay up for the Maybach. Too much money at the same price as Gibson. I didn’t like the Tokai one little bit. Sounded muddy and flat to me. The Heritage and Eastman sounded really similar. Like a couple of other comments, I greatly dislike the Heritage headstock ( I know, that’s not what really counts), so I doubt I could live with it. Okay, call me shallow. Of course, I’m making all these judgements based on the sound coming from an iPad. I should also admit that I am the owner of a Gibson Les Paul that I bought over 50 years ago, so I admit to being biased.

I have plenty of les Pauls Colin but let us know when you start thinning the herd of your SG Juniors LOL. Probably cost as much to ship it to New Hampshire USA as the price of the guitar though. Keep up the good work look forward to watching you every Friday Morning before I start working. Cheers!!!!

Great film. The Maybach sounds better than the Gibson. Easily the best sounding i the lineup. The finish on the Eastman is gorgeous. Thanks again.

I feel like Gibson is a weird sort of an addiction for me atleast :D. I only currently have an japanese made Edwards LP and I have tried Gibson standards and know that they are not really that much better and cost double the Edwards. But still something in me whispers to myself "you have to get the real deal Gibson LP". I think my dad has brainwashed me since I was a kid :D. He has been playing guitar for 50 years and owns a Gibson ES-335 and Gibson Custom Shop acoustic so I think the brand is so fixed in my head that one day I must buy the real deal. But the Japanese made LP copies are certainly the best bang for buck for getting a really close copy of the LP.

Sell the Tokai, keep the Gibson and buy another Gibson you want anyway....more is better
