Moral of the story, everybody seems to be a gear grabbin’ master here. 🤣 For those saying to use first, here ya go. Everybody drives different, but I never use first in my six speed dually. The manual even suggests using second unless you have a load behind or on the truck. Especially considering that second in these transmissions has practically the same ratio as first in a regular car or a compact truck, so there isn’t as much harm being done to the clutch as you’d imagine. As for the rev matching, a person would be better off to save wear, and for a smoother ride, but hell, nobody that drives something smaller than a big rig does it, so what does it matter? Your vehicle, do as you wish. (Nice truck BTW, interior looks mint. 👌)

the other day i was driving my 2g on some dirt roads and rev marched down to second and did a pull. if you’re trying to speed up to pass someone, it makes sense. it makes even more sense if you’re trying to drop a gear and disappear.

Hey there, I taught myself how to drive a manual in less than a month without owning a car. I use this app called Getaround, it's a peer to peer car sharing service that lets you rent cars by the hour (usually $5-10 per hour) and you can specify manual transmission in the search. There are other such apps out there that do the same thing. Availability may be depending on your area. If nobody is renting a manual car in your area, you can also go and test drive used cars from Craigslist. While that may be rude, it's not completely dishonest because you might actually want to buy the car. Barring that, find a friend who will lend you theirs. There are a small amount of driving schools that still teach standard transmission. Make sure you watch a ton of youtube videos before doing it.

David I just did my 47RE to NV4500 swap I'm in Sacramento. Not too hard to find parts. Look up in northern cali for em. I'm from South Carolina and was visiting friends here and my trans went out. So I swapped to a NV4500 in their driveway lol. There's a company in Texas called Super stick transmissions they're great. As for a bellhousing my buddy Chad McKinney from Quickdraw Brand in Ohio makes the bellhousings.

Alright then, my point stands. I may have been a bit forward with my comment, but I was just just looking out for the longevity of that clutch. @@jojowilliams5093 I completely understand. there is no need to use first on a nv4500 or 5600. Anyone who drives a manual cummins ram(or any heavy duty truck like a dump truck or tractor)will say the same exact thing. only time i use first is if I'm pulling a heavy load and need to get going. in an empty truck 1st is all but pointless and a waste of time. Hell if I'm bob tailing in a tractor I start in 3rd.

ThePhantomEvoX yes, using 2nd is more practical and easy. But using 1st when your not in a rush can save your clutch. Very little slippage of the clutch occurs when using the 1st gear. This truck has the original clutch from 1999 with 149k miles on it
