A two-dimensional shape has two measures, a length and a width. They are also called 2D shapes. We can name a two-dimensional shapes by knowing its number of sides and vertices. A triangle is any two-dimensional shape with 3 sides and 3 vertices. A quadrilateral is any two-dimensional shape with four sides and four vertices. A pentagon is any two-dimensional shape with 5 sides and 5 vertices. A hexagon is any two-dimensional shape with 6 sides and 6 vertices. Their number of sides is the same as their number of vertices. We use dot paper to draw two-dimensional shapes with three straight sides and with four straight sides. We use dots at the corners where the sides of the shape meet (the vertices). Be careful when counting the sides and vertices. Make sure to count them one time each by starting at the top and going in one direction. We count the sides and vertices of various shapes and put all of the quadrilaterals into a circle.
