What most people don't understand is that 4x4's have only been around since about the '50s or 60's. they were invented earlier, but were uncommon till about the '70s, at least around here (rural Kansas, cattle country.) I have been told, have yet to test it, that 2wd with m/t's and tire chains will go anywhere a 4x4 can. That's coming from some old-timer country boys, not me.

They virtually can though. I live right near Yosemite and during the rainy/winter season my 2wd ram has been able to handle all the terrain just as good as my buddies 4x4. Now when it comes to snow on paved roads, 2wd is awful. At least RWD does. I bought a 2022 ram 4x4 because I was tired of feeling unsafe in the snow. I still have my 2012 rwd ram though. @@jacobsebastien3910

Ok so here is the deal. I've got a small construction company. I have three trucks. I off-road here in southern Ohio hills all the time and have done so for years. Had all kinds of trucks 4x4s and what nots. I have a 4x4 explorer bone stock, an old 2wd ranger I've lifted and added winch and mud tires and of course a locker, I also daily drive an 03 f150 2wd which I have modified to the best of my ability for pulling heavy loads, big tires extra heavy duty suspension and rear off road tires load range e and of course a front winch and diff locker. I use the f150 every day on and off road pulling trailers with tractors, gravel dump trailer, tools, etc. A 4x4 will always be the best option off road hands down, however in my 35 years of construction and country living.. farmy, backwoods life etc. I've learned that a 2wd is not useless as long as you have a locker or quality limited slip and good off road tires. Ground clearance, tires, lockers, and a winch makes a 2wd useful off road. Point is set up what you have to the best possible performance. Over size everything. Taller tires in front slightly shorter but still bigger than stock in the rear helps position vehicle weight over drive tires and gives the maximum amount of torque to clean out the lugs if need be. There it is a not so brief description of what I know about off road.

@@justookthe_l_yt996 ford put trac lock limited slip differentials in a allot of there trucks. Your truck may already have one. A good way to tell is to put a jack under the rear diff chalk the front tires and pick both back tires off the ground. Put the truck in neutral and spin one of the back tires. If you have one both tires will spin in the same exact direction. If not they will spin in opposite directions. .... If not they make tons of aftermarket setups. Auburn gear is a good one. Ox locker is good. You go to a junk yard and get a Ford trac lock diff and do an easy swap.

I go off-roading in my 062wd dodge Ram 1500 all the time and the reason like you mine gets thru many places is simply because of the tires and ground clearance. You have the v8 so that helps a lot too. You may also have 3.55 or .92 gears which helps a lot too. I have a manual trans which the highest gearing lol and all I need is the locker to kick in and I’m golden. Next step is 4.56s and I’ll be right behind the jeeps. A winch is also necessary as I’ll be getting stuck way more, but hey, that’s what a winch is for. Good stuff!

I have a pathfinder with Bridgestone dueler revo3 ATs, and in the winter I don't even need 4wd slush, and snow don't even phase them the slightest. Of course that was possible. 2WD off-roading just requires a little more driving, but it's nice to have the backup of the 2 4WD trucks to support you if needed. Really scary thing is that my mother used to try that in a 74 Toyota Corolla, and when we drowned in a river and completely flooded the car, a couple of 4WD lifted truck had to tow us out. She still doesn't think it was a big deal because all we had to do was dry off the distributor cap and then the car started again. My friends and I have gotten lots of 4WD trucks stuck, that's why you go with friends no matter what you drive.

@@edgarchapa7266 An air-locking differential (ARB) or an electric-locking differential (Eaton) are available from the aftermarket. Parts and installation are not cheap, however. Too, Eaton offeres a helical-gear type limited slip that when engagaed is almost a locker. Whether or not there is one of these three types for your truck depends on the popularity of the model and of course the drive axle type/ring gear size. There are clutch-type limited slip diffs too but those require maintenance and can be a regular hassle. Pay a little more, buy a good unit, have some mechanical sympathy and you should be able to travel far. Good luck to you.
