That moment when Charlie turns back to Ben and they share a glance, not a single word spoken, that might as well be an eternity smashed into five seconds. It's everything I love about this movie.

I think in Ben's mind Dan was a man doing what he had to do, making a sacrifice of himself for his wife and children. He was more worthy of life than the trigger-happy villains. There was no need to shoot Dan, they were wasters of life, takers instead of givers. They were without morals. In a nutshell life held no value for them so they were unworthy of living.

I think The Score is the original music written for the film, the soundtrack is what is published as a companion for the film release and can include songs heard in the film. Which is odd right? The Star Wars soundtrack for example includes large sections of the score By John Williams that was never used in the film. Most Soundtracks include the entire song even if only a few seconds are used in the film. Sometimes Soundtracks will include signature sound effects I think they do this in Kill Bill.

I think Ben grew to admire and respect Dan, and admired how he did what he promised. He wanted to see Dan and Charlie succeed; when they killed Dan, I think he killed them partly out of anger, partly to save Charlie's life (because his men where going to kill him no matter what he said). Great Westerns like this focus on INTEGRITY, a man keeping his word no matter what. It's something many of iconic Westerns emphasize. Mt three favorites are The Wild Bunch, The Magnificent Seven, and High Noon!

He knew that he could get on the train to Yuma and easily escape later but wanted to give Dan the win. Ben Foster who plays Charlie Prince is so damn good and steals every scene he is in. It is a shame that you are not familiar with James Mangold because with he exception of Indiana Jones 5, the guy only directs great movies. You should look into his filmography that includes Cop Land, Girl Interrupted, Identity (great movie), Walk the Line, Knight and Day (which I love with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz), The Wolverine, Logan and Ford V Ferrari. I feel like Ben was wanting Dan to succeed after hearing and seeing everything Dan was willing to do for his family. And growing up without a mother and father realized that Dan is what he would of wanted in a father. So killing Dan wasn't what he wanted after he got on the train, so Charlie and the others had to pay the price for doing what he didn't want. Will didn't kill Ben because he seen Ben kill his gang for what they had done to his dad.

3:10 to Yuma was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard. When westerns went out of style Leonard switched to crime. Although there have been many adaptations of Leonard's novels - most very average - three oustanding ones came out in quick succession in the 90s: Jackie Brown (aka Rum Punch), Out of Sight and Get Shorty. Shanelle has reacted to the first one, but the other two are highly recommended. Leonard's dialog iin his books are on parr with Tarantino's. Weinstein gifted Tarantino the movie rights to four Leonard novels after the success of Pulp Fiction.

My take is Ben Wade is kind of like the Joker: He's bored of the rules and of life. He says early on that one of the other characters is "a song with one note" (which is a brilliant comment about someone btw.) I think Ben Wade was basically following thrills and entertainment more than anything else. Suddenly along comes this rancher with a fantastic, feel-good story about father and son. I think Ben Wade finds that story truly compelling and more interesting than the thugs he's been hanging out with. He decides life is more interesting if he helps this rancher look like a hero in front of his son. I think he is pissed that these boring thugs would shoot that good rancher at his highlight moment right in front of his son. Thus he kills the "songs with one note" and heads on to some other entertainment. Just my reading of it.

I'm not an expert and I could be wrong, but here's my understanding of score vs. soundtrack... A score is background music specifically composed for a film. Hans Zimmer, John Williams, etc. - those guys create scores. A soundtrack is (generally) made up of pre-existing songs, usually pop songs (think Guardians Of The Galaxy). Sometimes an artist will write a song specifically to include on a soundtrack but these days that's more often than not a promotional gimmick.

My take. Was Dan was a small bit of redemption for what happened to Ben in his early life. That was the importance of Bens back story with the bible. Which is also why there is a camera shot of Ben looking at the inlay of the gun handle. Bens mom never came back leaving him to his present. He didn't want to see that happen to Bens boy because through it all Dan treated him fairly and saw himself in the boy. The parallels are there. once you see the over all canvas of the story and inclusion of backstories.

As others have said, I think at the end Ben had so much respect for Dan it outweighed his tenuous loyalty to his gang, and Charlie killing Dan (at this point in his eyes unnecessarily) genuinely made Ben angry and saddened. But for me the brilliance and the nuance of Bens character is his duality - in making this seemingly righteous moral judgement, he simultaneously displays the flip side of his nature - his ruthlessness. Charlie did something that displeased him so he killed him and the rest of his men, even though Charlie was only being loyal to Ben. I think the biblical references are significant too. The way Ben looks at the crucifix on his revolver before dispensing his judgement on Charlie.
