Its actually simple...at low volumes of lungs (e.g expiration ),suractant becomes concentrentrated ->surface tnsion decreases->collapsing pressure decreases(acc to laplace law)->compliance increase ..that's why we say that compliance is greater at lower volumes ...vice versa happens during inspiration I.e volume increases ->surfactant concentration decrease ->surface tension increase ->collapsing pressure increase->compliance decrease ...thats whycompliance at higher volumes is less...this is the basis of hysteresis...dont know why people make this simple concept so difficult to understand..its simple physics

Not everyone has a brain for physics, and sometimes simple concepts are explained in confusing ways by lecturers, thank you for the note about volume and surface tension, it will be even more clearer to say surface area, when surface area is reduced , action of surfactant will be stronger, thank youuuu

The question I had is, for a same volume of lung why compliance differ between inspiration and expiration

hysteresis of the lung is one of the most astounding findings that we made about physiology and represents how simple nature is when it faces complex problems.

Yes, yes, all very astounding, but WHY is there hysteresis? WHY is compliance greater during expiration?? Based on result of the saline expts it must have to do with surface tension but HOW? You say it's "simple," but I don't see it, and the damn video sure didn't bother to say anything about it.

This is such a good series. Can I ask that you produce a side series explaining surface tension and surfactant and hysteresis further? It’s always brushed over in medical school. Thanks

What role has the closing capacity have on stopping lung collapsing (residual volume) vs it's high compliance at the end of expiration?

collapse of lower resp tract deficient in cartilage and less smooth muscle leads to air trapping beyound closing capacity and hence prevent total collapse of the Lung, I suppose.
