If you’re a beginning singer, you might be overwhelmed by the amount of exercises and advice out there. This lesson will cover 3 simple but effective exercises you can do each day to develop your voice.
The first thing we want to establish is a mindful connection between our breath and our voice. We’ll do this by hissing, humming, and then singing a vowel. Feel your abdominal muscles engage with a little pulse on each hiss, and aim for similar engagement on the hum and the hah. Engaging your abs at the onset of making sound is a crucial habit to build!
The second thing we want to develop is good coordination of the vocal folds, with minimal effort. The best type of exercise for this is called an SOVT, or semi-occluded vocal tract exercise. Popular examples include the lip trill and singing through a straw. Two of my favorites are the NG sound, like the end of the word sing, and another called the puffer fish. Try the puffer fish by keeping your lips slightly parted and blowing air through, letting your cheeks puff out. Do the same thing, this time making noise. You can add a finger for a little more resistance. We’ll use one of these exercises on an octave slide. But you can use an SOVT with any exercise pattern, including the melody of a song!
The third crucial coordination we want to develop is the ability to transition from our speaking voice range and function into our head voice function. To help ease this transition and smooth it out, we’ll first jump, then slide using the syllables MA and oo. Take your time on the slide. The more gradually you morph from A to oo, the smoother that transition should be! If you really slow down and think about it, you’ll notice that you move through an UH vowel on your way from A to oo, which is the perfect vowel for training mix!
