Hi Michael thank you so much for this video. I am presently building a tiny home and the contractor tells me I can only get a 9ft x 12ft bedroom I was really expecting a bigger bedroom but your video put my mind at ease. I do not think I have enough space for a closet and then a dresser. Any ideas? Help. Ill be using a full size bed.

If you have room for one piece, I suggest a wardrobe, chifforobe. With a piece like this you can usually have hanging storage and maybe a couple of larger drawers or a group of small to medium drawers. They're great solutions for clothes storage in rooms without closets.

I have a 9x10 BR with a queen size bed pushed into one corner. I have just enough space for a small night table, a small dresser with mirror, a wooden chair on the angled wall, a small storage box at the foot of the bed and a slim table to hold a flat TV. Its tight. I need a better layout.

I actually have this issue for my bedrooms, except the bump out closet is on the 9ft wall side (the dimension are opposite yours; 10ft in length and 9ft in width). Do you have any suggestions for a layout that can fit two small children?
@MichaelHelwig

Hi Tiffany, Thanks very much for the comment! One idea I have right off the top is bunk beds. When you can't go horizontal, go up right? Bunk beds have come a long way and there's so many great product designs on the market. They can be made to look like built-ins. You can 'theme' them - like making them look like train car bunks by adding curtains and plug-in LED sconces, so may creative ways to make them unique and fun. OR, could you take the doors off the closet to get a bit more floor space? You could utilize the open closet as space for one of the beds. It would almost be a 'half bed nook' where part of it is inside the closet space and part is out. Depending on the size of the beds, there would be room for the second bed on one of the other walls. You could use storage beds - where the beds lift up or have drawers under them for clothes, toys, bedding, etc. This would be in place of other dressers that would take up space elsewhere. Hope this gives you some 'out of the box' ideas. :)

I've used a daybed, even in a Guest Room, because it can work, and I have found it doesn't matter much , even with " couples ", they want to just usually get a good night's rest. There's a secretary drop down piece in the room, it has a writing area and floor lamp . Every guest room needs a chair or a bench , just IMHO. I suppose I look at from the perspective that I want to provide somewhere to sit besides a bed.

This video was extremely helpful! 💛You not only provided options, but you gave us measurements, visuals, and explanations as to the why behind it. You are amazing! We are currently downsizing and moving from a custom built home to a builder home. Our secondary bedrooms are 10x11. I wasn't sure I could get a queen size bed to fit. There is a window on the same side the closet door opens as well, which is a design flaw in my opinion.😞 It's going to be an adjustment for sure. Thank you so much for sharing your professional guidance and expertise!🌟🙏

Nice video!! We are interested in building a house, but don't want to make it too large. We can't decide on the layout of a first-floor guest bedroom. The layout of the room will be predicated upon the location of the closet. If we place the closet on the rear wall the room will be 10 ft (wide) x 12.1ft (depth), if we place the closet on the side wall it will be 12.4ft (wide) x 9.7ft (depth). Which of these might be best for placing a queen size bed? The closet will only be 4 feet wide.

Hi Terence, My initial thought is go with a smaller closet if it's a guest bedroom. Although storage in small homes is always something to think about, if the primary function of the room is to be a place for infrequent guests, you won't need a larger closet. To add to that, will you actually need a 12' long closet at all? Perhaps re-thinking the amount of storage you need - inside the room- will be a better way to go. So, would you benefit more from using the space saved for another purpose such as chest of drawers storage, a desk, a vanity or a comfortable chair to sit in, instead of a big closet. (Forgive my presumptiveness, I'm thinking alternative use....) That said, in a small spare bedroom, comparable in size to the video bedroom - 9' x 10', a queen size bed will fit with some adjustments. You will not be able to fit large nightstands or bedside tables. Large dressers that are deep will also be a challenge. My advice is to consider how you will use the room every day. If it must serve multiple functions: guest room, spare room office, crafting space, etc. I would opt for a small closet. Dedicated guest room, I'd still opt for a "smaller" closet to get the most floorspace inside the room.

I hear ya, Dawn. Small rooms can be tough. I suggest you think about ways to maximize your space the best ways you can. When you see things differently, new ways to enjoy your room will come to the surface. For example, can you create storage under your bed? You can get a storage bed in any size available. Beds are the biggest things in bedrooms, right? There's a huge opportunity to create storage and organization underneath. Use your vertical space. I'm a big fan of going 'up' when you can't go wide in a small room. Think about how you can use your walls to create storage and display. Install floating shelves that can hold books, decor, games, treasure, etc. Use the back of your door for hanging clothes and anything you need access to often. Plan out your closet and use inexpensive totes, closet systems, baskets, decorative boxes to really maximize EVERYTHING that doesn't need to be out all the time. That way, you'll have room for what you really want, your gamming setup and a place to sit when playing. Good luck and enjoy the new house!

With a five sided bedroom and the one long wall in the room broken up by an ugly convector unit under a mid-wall window, and two shorter walls taken up by closet doors, I’ve struggled with similar issues. I’ve managed to squeeze in a Queen sized bed on the wall opposite the window, two dressers flanking the window/convector and a narrow “office” /media area on the other two angled walls…. It doesn’t leave a lot of room to navigate, but it works. Your ideas for small spaces have been very helpful and they reconfirm some decisions (no footboard, unconventionally narrow bedside table, neutral drapes, etc). Wondering if you have any ideas for how to reclaim “walls” that are broken up by oddly placed heating/ac units … there’s also one in my long rectangular living/dining room that ruins the longest wall. Currently I have a slightly offset ( to accommodate traffic pattern) facing sofa/loveseat that float perpendicular to that long window wall, which unfortunately leaves the convector visible. We can’t really cover it or prop anything in front of it because restricted air circulation creates mold (!!!) … my downstairs neighbor discovered this the hard way! So … do we learn to live with it? The poor placement of the convector in the room basically makes the “living” area is actually smaller than the dining area ( behind the floating loveseat) … we’ve accepted that, but the ugly convector is really bugging me. The entire length of the convector wall has windows to the ceiling ( but we can’t use full length drapes because of that “darn” convector! Any solution?
@MichaelHelwig
2 жыл бұрын
That's a toughy... First, can you flip the rooms? Flip the living room into the dining room and the dining room into the living room? It sounds like there's not much you can do with the convector unit and if you're not in that room as much, you may find it works better as dining space. If you're able to swap rooms, you might feel better and have more layout options for the living room in the dining space? As for drapes, perhaps Roman shades are the answer? I also like cellular shades that can move top/down or down/top to give you options for treating windows that have obstructions - radiators or baseboards heating that gets hot... I have wide slat blinds and curtains in my living room. I have a long covered radiator smack in the middle of a long bay of windows and I used a combo of hemmed drapes and wide slat blinds to cover them. Everyone who sees it for the first time loves the combination. Thanks for the comment. Keep the faith, there's an answer for every tricky and awkward room!

With the third option, would a king sized bed fit in there? I’m moving into a unit that’s similar to that lay out but it’s 9x12
@MichaelHelwig
Жыл бұрын
Hi jameelamorris2543, a king size bed might be a tight fit for a room this size. I would recommend not having a large bed frame, something with a modest, slim headboard. Maybe no footboard... You want to keep the frame as minimal as possible in order to fit a king. Also, perhaps incorporate the storage you would usually have with bedside tables into a headboard. I'm interested in hearing what you decide to do. Please post here with updates. :)

Although cute, think about this...the average size bedroom size within the U.S is 11x12. Did you also know that within the U.S the average size prison room is 9x10. You are essentially putting your child in a room that's a little bit bigger than a prison cell while you have a media room, game room, and a big loft in your home that most are paying $500,000+ for.

Thank you for featuring small spaces. My challenge is that, our room is small and there’s really no space for built in storage because there are vents (and air intake) on the walls, and ductwork (bulkhead) on the ceiling. Now I’m in a dilemma. We really need storage but having the challenges that the room has, I’m stuck. Any tips on how to design around vents (so as not to cover them) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Thanks so much for reaching out. You must be reading my mind because I'm actually covering this in a video/blog coming up soon. If you need built-in storage You'll have t bite the bullet and build it. I know you mentioned that you have vents and ductwork, but if there's a will there's a way. In the past, I've installed MANY cabinets over floor vents. You can get duct extenders at the big box hardware stores. They're available in many different sizes, angles, shapes, and more. They're made of aluminum and can be connected to one another with duct tape. This will help you create a channel for your heating and AC to run through. You'll need t modify the cabinetry that you place in front of or on top of the HVAC channels so that the new vent channel that you'll make with the extenders will work to move the air. You'll then cover the new duct channel with a decorative plate or grate, also easy to find, to finish the exterior. As I mentioned, I've done this exact "hack" many times over the years and it's been a success each time. Stay tuned for the post that I do on this exact topic, and good luck on this project! Remember, there's always a way to modify cabinets. A little creative thinking and some ductwork goes along way :)

Thanks so much for your comment. Small rooms are tricky, right? Trundle beds are great. Have you considered a loft bed? Sometimes using as much of the vertical space in small rooms is the best option. And, awkwardly placed windows are challenging for sure. Is there a way you can use the window to help you distinguish zones? For example, one side of the window for bed, the other side for play zone?
